Kokum butter

Kokum butter is one of the most stable and also the hardest of the plant butters on the market. Its appearance is nevertheless unusual - it is fairly crumbly, has a greyish cast and almost no scent. It comes from the fruit kernels of the Indian tree Garcinia indica.

It is very popular in cosmetics because it stays solid at room temperature yet begins to melt on contact with the skin, though only slightly. It is also used as a substitute for cocoa butter in chocolate making. It has rejuvenating effects and marked moisturising properties. It has a uniform triglyceride composition (containing up to 80% SOS triglycerides - stearic-oleic-stearic). It helps prevent the skin from drying out, heals cracked skin and helps heal ulcers. It is non-comedogenic, so it does not clog pores. It helps stabilise emulsions. It has high oxidative stability. Melting point: 35 - 40 °C.

It can be used in a variety of cosmetic products. For cold process soap making, use a maximum of 5-10 % (the high stearic acid content speeds up trace considerably). For the same reason, do not exceed 5% in body lotions and conditioners (ideally 1-3%). In body butters and balms, 5% or more can be used. It combines excellently with beeswax and candelilla wax and with all types of oils.
