Product description

A black HDPE plastic bottle 28/410 with a capacity of 500 ml is a container for liquid and semi-liquid products used in larger quantities – from hair and body cosmetics to household cleaning products.

Black HDPE is opaque, which limits light exposure to the contents. The material is also lightweight and shatterproof, making it suitable for the bathroom, shower, and travel.

Suitable applications

  • Hair and body cosmetics – shampoos, conditioners, shower gels and liquid soaps, for which 500 ml is a standard family-size pack.
  • Body lotions and thinner emulsions – products that flow well and can be dispensed through the closure without scooping.
  • Light-sensitive products – formulations with plant extracts, fragrance components, or colorants that change colour and scent faster when exposed to light.
  • Household cleaning products – cleaning solutions, laundry gels and dishwashing liquids.
  • Bulk packaging – larger volume for refilling smaller bottles or for semi-finished products in manufacturing.

The container is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; a declaration of conformity is available with the product.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed to hold under normal filling conditions. Total brim-full volume is the physical capacity up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference between the two provides clearance for the closure, which extends into the bottle, and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

The fill level is not visible through the black wall. When filling, it is worth measuring or weighing the dose in advance, or filling on a scale. This ensures the same amount in each bottle when working with multiple units.

Closure and neck

The bottle has a 28/410 neck thread. Closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. For custom combinations, we recommend checking the seal, dispensing, and container behaviour with the specific formulation. This is especially important for thick gels and thin liquids, which dispense differently.

What to know before filling

Container preparation. Before the first fill, wash the bottle with warm water and detergent, rinse thoroughly, and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Then let it dry completely with the neck facing down so that no water remains inside, which could dilute the contents or introduce microorganisms.

Filling temperature. HDPE softens at higher temperatures. A hot product can deform the bottle, and as it cools, a vacuum forms that draws the walls inward. Products manufactured at elevated temperatures should therefore only be filled once cooled down.

The bottle is not intended for sterilisation by boiling or in an oven. Alcohol and thorough drying are sufficient for disinfection.

Compatibility with contents. HDPE is resistant to aqueous solutions, surfactants, weak acids and alkalis, and to common alcohol-based solutions. Caution is warranted with concentrated essential oils, heavily fragranced blends, and organic solvents. These can gradually permeate the plastic and deform it, causing the contents to lose their scent. Such contents are better suited to glass.

Labelling. The dimensions needed for label design are listed in the product parameters. On a black background, a label with a light background or light print is the most legible. The bottle wall flexes slightly when pressed, so a film label adheres better than rigid paper.

Recycling. HDPE is a recyclable plastic. An empty and rinsed bottle belongs in the sorted plastic waste collection.

Frequently asked questions

Does a black HDPE bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, a black HDPE bottle is opaque and limits light exposure to the contents. This benefits products with plant extracts, fragrance components, and colorants that fade or change scent faster when exposed to light. However, the container does not protect against air oxidation or microbial contamination, so it does not replace an antioxidant or preservative in the formulation.
To what level should the 500 ml HDPE plastic bottle be filled?
The 500 ml HDPE plastic bottle should be filled to the nominal volume, not up to the neck rim. The headspace serves as clearance for the closure and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Since the fill level is not visible through the black wall, the most reliable approach is to measure the dose in advance or fill on a scale.
Is the HDPE bottle suitable for essential oils and alcohol-based solutions?
For standard alcohol-based solutions, yes; for concentrated essential oils, no. HDPE handles aqueous and alcohol-based blends well, as well as finished products with a typical level of fragrance. Pure essential oils and organic solvents, however, can permeate the plastic and deform it. For such contents, glass is more appropriate; for heavily fragranced products, a compatibility test in the container is recommended.
Can the HDPE plastic bottle be reused?
Yes, the HDPE bottle can be refilled after thorough cleaning. Wash it with warm water and detergent, rinse, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and let it dry completely. It is not suitable for sterilisation by boiling, as the plastic softens at high temperatures. For products intended for sale, using a new container is recommended.
What closure fits a bottle with a 28/410 neck thread?
The bottle takes a closure with the matching neck designation, i.e. 28/410. The type of closure is chosen according to the consistency of the contents: a thick shampoo or gel dispenses differently from a thin cleaning solution. For a custom bottle-and-closure combination, it is advisable to verify the seal and dispensing with the specific product before filling a larger batch.
