Product description

The 1000 ml HDPE plastic bottle is designed for larger packaging of liquid and semi-liquid products – shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps, bath foams, or refills for topping up smaller containers. HDPE is a lightweight material that does not break on impact. The bottle is therefore suitable for the bathroom, the workshop, and for transport, where glass would be unnecessarily heavy and risky. The transparent wall lets you see the colour of the product and how much remains.

Alongside finished cosmetics, it is also useful in production: for storing prepared bases, solutions, or liquid raw materials that are used up gradually.

What the bottle is suitable for

  • Rinse-off cosmetics in larger packaging – shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps, and conditioners, where a litre is used up relatively quickly.
  • Refill packaging – a bulk container used to top up smaller bottles with a pump or dispenser.
  • Aqueous preparations – toner, micellar water, hydrolat, or a base for further processing.
  • Home care products – liquid laundry detergents and cleaning agents of your own production.

Material properties in practice

HDPE is a rigid, slightly flexible plastic. The bottle wall gives slightly when squeezed, which makes it easier to pour thicker products.

The transparent wall does not protect the contents from light. Light-sensitive products are therefore better stored in a cabinet, or a dark container should be chosen for them.

HDPE softens at higher temperatures. Allow hot preparations to cool before filling, otherwise the bottle may deform.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the quantity the bottle is designed for during normal filling. The total brim volume is the physical volume up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference between them provides headspace for the cap or pump and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

Good to know

Before filling for the first time, wash the bottle, sanitise it, and leave it to dry completely. Residual water in the bottle unnecessarily burdens the preservation of the product.

Caps with the same neck type as well as ready-made bottle-and-cap combinations are available in the Handymade range. When combining components yourself, we recommend verifying leak-tightness and dispensing behaviour with your specific formulation.

With a litre of thick shampoo or conditioner, test in advance whether the product flows easily through the chosen cap even when the bottle is nearly empty.

Concentrated essential oils, fragrance compositions, and organic solvents are not suitable for long-term storage in HDPE. Finished products with standard fragrance dosing are fine.

A label adheres better to the flexible wall when applied to a degreased, dry surface and to a filled bottle. The empty bottle is recycled as plastic.

Frequently asked questions

Does a transparent HDPE bottle protect the contents from light?
No, the transparent wall transmits light. For shampoos, shower gels, and other products that are used up quickly, this is usually not an issue. Preparations containing vegetable oils, natural colorants, or active ingredients sensitive to light should be stored in the dark or filled into a dark container.
Can warm products be filled into the 1000 ml HDPE bottle?
Yes, but only lukewarm, not hot. HDPE softens at higher temperatures and the bottle may deform, so allow the preparation to cool before filling. After sealing warm contents, the wall may pull slightly inward as it cools, so it is better to cap the product once it has cooled.
Is an HDPE bottle suitable for essential oils and fragrance oils?
An HDPE bottle is not suitable for concentrated essential oils and fragrance oils. These substances can permeate the wall and soften it during prolonged contact, so they should be stored in glass. Finished products in which the fragrance is used at standard cosmetic concentrations are commonly filled into HDPE.
Why is the litre HDPE bottle not filled to the brim?
Because the bottle needs headspace above the fill level. The nominal volume is the quantity intended for normal filling; the total brim volume is larger. The headspace accommodates the cap or pump and allows for expansion of the contents when heated. A bottle filled to the neck will overflow when capped and may leak with temperature changes.
Can the plastic HDPE bottle be reused?
Yes, an HDPE bottle can be refilled after thorough cleaning. Wash it with warm water and detergent, rinse, sanitise with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and leave to dry. The plastic may retain the scent of the previous contents, so it is best to refill it repeatedly with the same or a similar product.
