Product description

A plastic canister with a capacity of 5 l is a stock container for larger quantities of liquids that are gradually dispensed into smaller packaging or directly into production. The wall is transparent, so the fill level, colour, and any cloudiness or sediment can be seen without opening. The side scale shows how much content remains and how much has been dispensed.

It is particularly suited to workshops where work is done in litre volumes: for distilled water, hydrolates, liquid soaps, shampoo and shower bases, surfactants, glycerine, and vegetable oils. The container is suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

What the canister is suitable for

  • Stock storage – raw materials and semi-finished products that are consumed gradually remain in one closed container instead of several smaller bottles.
  • Preparing larger batches – a finished base or water phase blend can be prepared in advance and drawn off as needed.
  • Visual content inspection – layering, sediment, or colour change can be spotted before the contents are used.
  • Approximate measuring – the scale helps with filling, diluting, and monitoring stock levels.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the quantity the container is designed for under normal filling, in this case 5 l. Total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference serves as a reserve for the cap and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The canister should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

The scale on the wall is a rough guide. When weighing raw materials for a formula, a scale is recommended, as the same volume has different mass depending on the liquid.

Good to know

Before the first fill, it is recommended to wash the canister, sanitise it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow it to dry completely. Residual water in the container reduces the stability of aqueous materials and is undesirable in oils.

Contents: aqueous solutions, surfactants, glycerine, and vegetable oils are common fills for plastic containers. With undiluted essential oils, fragrance compositions, and solvents, compatibility with the plastic must be verified in advance.

Hot fills should be allowed to cool before filling. Heat can deform the plastic wall, and a vacuum may form as the contents cool after sealing.

Cap: caps with the same neck type as specified in the parameters are available in the Handymade range.

Labelling: a label with the material name, batch number, and fill date can be affixed to the wall; container dimensions are in the parameters. Empty, rinsed containers go into plastic recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Can the 5 l plastic canister be filled to the brim?
No, the canister is filled to the nominal volume of 5 l, not to the neck. The headspace is a reserve for the cap and for the expansion of the liquid with temperature changes. When filled to the brim, the contents may spill when opened or press against the cap when the temperature rises, compromising the seal.
Does the transparent canister protect the contents from light?
No, the transparent wall transmits light. The advantage is visual inspection of the contents; the disadvantage is that light-sensitive materials — such as vegetable oils prone to oxidation or hydrolates — must be stored in the dark. A closed cabinet or storage area away from direct sunlight is sufficient.
Is the plastic canister suitable for essential oils and solvents?
For undiluted essential oils, fragrance compositions, and solvents, the plastic canister is not recommended without prior verification. These substances can degrade the plastic or be absorbed by it. For aqueous solutions, surfactants, liquid soaps, and vegetable oils it is a common choice, though compatibility with the specific fill is worth testing.
Can the 5 l plastic canister be reused?
Yes, after thorough washing, sanitising with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and complete drying, it can be refilled. It is recommended to use it for the same type of content, as the plastic may retain the odour of the previous fill. A scratched or deformed canister is best discarded.
What cap fits the 5 l plastic canister?
A cap with the same neck type and diameter as specified in the canister parameters is suitable. Compatible caps are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, it is recommended to test the seal with the specific fill, particularly with thin liquids, when carrying a full container, or when storing on its side.
