A homemade anti-aging facial serum is something you can mix in the comfort of your own home — and it will be 100% natural at the same time. No rocket science: we have selected for you four basic carrier oils and three essential oils with which you can prepare several variations right away.

About this recipe

This is an oil-based anti-aging facial serum that is 100% natural and that you can make in the comfort of your own home. It is built on four carrier oils — rosehip, macadamia and jojoba oil and olive squalane — and on three essential oils: lavender, geranium and frankincense. From these you can prepare several variations: two 20 ml blends for a bottle with a dropper and a percentage formula for a larger amount, supplemented with vitamin E.

We drew the recipes from the School of natural skincare.

Main benefits

  • 100% natural composition

You mix the serum from carrier and essential oils only — and olive squalane replaces the silicones that are often used in commercial serums.

  • Anti-aging and anti-wrinkle

Macadamia oil is an excellent choice for an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle blend, mainly due to its high content of palmitoleic acid and oleic acid, which slow down the aging process and help regenerate skin cells.

  • Light texture

Macadamia oil is light and very well absorbed, jojoba oil spreads well and is absorbed into the skin, and olive squalane is much lighter than carrier oils.

  • Regeneration and soothing

The essential oils lavender, geranium and frankincense are known for their regenerative, protective, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties.

  • Several variations

From four carrier oils and three essential oils you can put together a number of combinations; for a larger amount you have a percentage formula supplemented with vitamin E, a strong natural antioxidant.

Key ingredients in the recipe

We have selected four basic carrier oils and three essential oils. Below we go through what each of them brings to the serum — so you can tailor the blend to your own skin.

Rosehip oil

We wrote about the amazing effects of rosehip oil in a separate article. In this recipe it forms the base of both 20 ml blends as well as of the percentage formula.

Macadamia oil

An excellent choice for an anti-aging and anti-wrinkle blend, mainly due to its high content of palmitoleic acid and oleic acid, which slow down the aging process and help regenerate skin cells. On top of that it is light and very well absorbed.

Jojoba oil

It is actually a liquid wax with a unique ratio of highly unsaturated fatty acids. Unlike other oils, jojoba oil is very similar in chemical composition to human sebum, it spreads well and is absorbed into the skin, and it regulates the skin’s moisture.

Olive squalane

It is an excellent natural substitute for silicones, which are often used in commercial serums. At the same time, it is very similar to the squalane our body naturally produces to hydrate and protect the skin. Olive squalane is much lighter than carrier oils.

Essential oils, vitamin E and packaging

Lavender essential oil, geranium and frankincense are known for their regenerative, protective, soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. However, they are not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy, geranium even throughout the whole pregnancy.

The formula for a larger amount is supplemented with vitamin E 70% in an amount of 0.1% — it is a strong natural antioxidant. In our current range it corresponds to liquid vitamin E, DL-alpha tocopherol.

You prepare the finished serum directly in a glass bottle with a dropper — both smaller blends are calculated for 20 ml.

The recipe

We bring you three variants: two ready blends for a bottle with a dropper (20 ml) and a percentage formula if you want to make a larger amount. The ingredient contents in the formula are given in percentages by weight, so they correspond to a batch of 100 g of finished serum.

Variant 1 — jojoba and rosehip oil (20 ml)

Variant 2 — rosehip oil, macadamia oil and olive squalane (20 ml)

Variant 3 — percentage formula with vitamin E (100 g)

If you would like to make a larger amount, we attach a formula supplemented with vitamin E, which is a strong natural antioxidant.

The essential oils lavender, geranium and frankincense are not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy, geranium even throughout the whole pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions about the recipe

Practical questions about the homemade anti-aging serum — choosing the oils, pregnancy, vitamin E and larger batches.

Which oils should I choose for the serum?

We have selected four basic carrier oils — rosehip, macadamia, jojoba and olive squalane — and three essential oils: lavender, geranium and frankincense. From these you can prepare several variations right away; you will find two specific 20 ml ratios in the recipe.

Why is there olive squalane in the recipe?

It is an excellent natural substitute for silicones, which are often used in commercial serums, and it is very similar to the squalane the body naturally produces to hydrate and protect the skin. On top of that it is much lighter than carrier oils.

Can I use the serum during pregnancy?

The essential oils used are not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy, geranium even throughout the whole pregnancy.

What is vitamin E in the recipe for?

The formula for a larger amount is supplemented with vitamin E 70% in an amount of 0.1%, because it is a strong natural antioxidant.

How do I mix a larger amount of the serum?

Use the percentage formula: 24% rosehip oil, 24.9% macadamia oil, 50% olive squalane, 0.5% EO frankincense, 0.5% EO lavender and 0.1% vitamin E 70%. The percentages are by weight, so for a 100 g batch they correspond directly to grams.
