Product description

A dropper with a black matte cap and a glossy stripe is used for dispensing thin liquids drop by drop. It is suitable for facial serums, oil blends, alcohol extracts, and active ingredients that are measured in small quantities.

It consists of a glass tube, a silicone bulb, and a threaded plastic cap. The part in permanent contact with the contents is primarily glass, which does not alter the scent or colour of the filling. The dropper is suitable for contact with cosmetic products. The black matte cap complements amber, clear, and coloured glass.

What products is the dropper suitable for

  • Serums and concentrates – both water-based and oil-based serums are applied drop by drop, so there is no waste.
  • Facial and hair oils – the tube draws up oil without it running down the neck and label.
  • Alcohol extracts – glass is resistant to ethanol and the liquid can be measured drop by drop.
  • Raw materials in a home workshop – the dropper makes it easier to measure liquid active ingredients, colorants, or fragrance components in small amounts.

The dropper is not suitable for thick gels, emulsions, or creams. The tube does not draw them up evenly and the contents remain inside. For such textures, a pump dispenser is more practical.

How to choose the right length and neck size

When choosing a dropper, two things matter: the thread type and the tube length. The thread must match the bottle neck, otherwise the cap will not seal or cannot be tightened. This dropper fits bottles with an 18/415 neck.

The length should be such that the end of the tube reaches just above the bottom. A shorter tube will not draw up the remaining contents. One that is too long will press against the bottom, the cap will not seat properly, and the glass may crack.

Bottles with the same neck type and ready-made bottle-and-dropper combinations are available from Handymade. For a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing behaviour, and dropper performance with the specific formulation.

Check the length on an empty bottle. Once screwed on, the cap should seat on the neck without resistance.

Filling the bottle and volume headspace

Every bottle has two volumes. The nominal volume is the quantity the container is designed for at standard fill. The total volume is the physical capacity up to the rim of the neck. The difference between them provides headspace for the dropper tube and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. In an overfilled bottle, the tube will displace some of the contents and it will leak through the thread onto the neck and label.

What is worth knowing

  • Preparation before first use – wash the dropper, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and leave to dry completely. Draw the disinfecting solution in and release it several times to rinse through the tube and the inside of the bulb.
  • Changing the filling – silicone may retain the scent of strongly fragranced products. Bear this in mind if you use the dropper on a different filling after cleaning.
  • Handling glass – the tube has thin walls. Avoid knocking it against the bottle neck and sudden temperature changes, such as rinsing with cold water immediately after hot.
  • Recycling – the dropper consists of three materials that are sorted separately once disassembled: glass, silicone, and plastic.

The silicone bulb may soften or swell with prolonged contact with concentrated essential oils, certain solvents, or volatile silicones. For such fillings, we recommend testing with the specific formulation. Store the bottle upright so that the contents do not remain in the bulb.

Frequently asked questions

What bottles does the 84 mm dropper with an 18/415 thread fit?
The dropper fits bottles with an 18/415 neck whose internal height matches the tube length of 84 mm. With a different thread, the cap will not seal or cannot be tightened. Once screwed on, the end of the tube should remain just above the bottom so that the remaining contents can be drawn up. Ready-made bottle-and-dropper combinations are available from Handymade.
Is the dropper suitable for oils and alcohol extracts?
Yes, the dropper is suitable for vegetable oils, oil serums, water-based solutions, and alcohol extracts. The part in permanent contact with the contents is the glass tube, which is resistant to these liquids. The silicone bulb comes into contact with the filling only during drawing up. Suitability of the packaging has been confirmed for contact with cosmetic products. For unusual solvents, it is advisable to check compatibility on a sample.
Can the dropper be used for essential oils?
The dropper can be used for short-term measuring of essential oils; for long-term storage of concentrated essential oils, it is advisable to test it first. Silicone may soften or swell with prolonged contact with their vapours. Diluted blends in a carrier oil, such as facial or massage oils, generally do not cause problems.
How is the dropper cleaned and can it be reused?
The dropper can be reused after thorough cleaning. Rinse the tube and bulb several times with warm water and a surfactant, then with clean water, and finally with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Before filling, the interior must dry completely so that no water enters the product. This is especially important for anhydrous oil serums.
Can the dropper dispense precisely?
The dropper dispenses approximately, not with laboratory precision. Drop size depends on the viscosity and surface tension of the liquid, the temperature, and the angle of the tube. A drop of oil and a drop of a water-based serum therefore do not have the same volume. For everyday application of a serum or oil, this is sufficient. When manufacturing to a formula, we recommend weighing the raw materials.
