Product description

A plastic bottle with a nominal volume of 500 ml is designed for larger packaging of liquid cosmetics and household preparations. It is made from transparent PET, a lightweight plastic suitable for the bathroom, shower, and travel. The clear material also lets you see the colour and fill level of the contents.

Beyond cosmetics, the bottle is also suitable for technical use, for example for home-made cleaning agents or stock solutions in a workshop. The material is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; a declaration of conformity is available with the product.

What the bottle is suitable for

  • Rinse-off cosmetics – shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps, and bath foams where a larger volume is used and a lightweight plastic container is practical in the shower.
  • Aqueous and mildly viscous preparations – tonics, micellar waters, hydrolats, body milks, and conditioners; the dispensing method is determined by the chosen closure.
  • Bulk packaging – the larger volume is useful for refilling smaller bottles or storing your own bases and working solutions.
  • Household preparations – cleaning sprays, dish soaps, or fabric fragrances, provided their composition is compatible with PET.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the quantity the bottle is designed for under normal filling conditions. Total brimful volume is the physical capacity up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference between the two serves as a margin for the closure, the pump or sprayer tube, and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes.

The bottle should be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Filling right up to the neck will cause overflow when a pump or sprayer is fitted, and the contents may press against the closure when heated.

Choosing a closure

Dispensing depends on the closure. Thin, aqueous preparations are typically sprayed, while thick gels and milks are dispensed with a pump or through a disc-top cap. Closures with the matching neck type (stated in the product parameters) and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. For a custom combination, we recommend testing the seal, dispensing, and packaging behaviour with your specific formulation.

What's worth knowing

Preparation before filling. Before first use, wash the bottle with lukewarm water and a detergent, rinse thoroughly, and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. It must dry completely before filling so that residual water does not contaminate the product.

Heat sensitivity of the material. PET must be kept away from heat, as it may deform. Hot mixtures must therefore be allowed to cool down before filling. The bottle should not be sterilised by boiling or in an oven.

Do not expose the bottle to aggressive chemicals. For preparations with a higher proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend carrying out a compatibility test for a few weeks before filling a larger batch.

Light protection. The clear material does not protect the contents from light. Preparations containing light-sensitive ingredients should be stored out of direct sunlight, or a dark-coloured container should be chosen instead.

Labelling. The dimensions needed for label design are in the product parameters. Apply the label to a dry and degreased surface, ideally before filling or after thoroughly wiping down the filled bottle.

Reuse. The bottle may be refilled repeatedly after washing and disinfection, as long as the material remains clear, scratch-free, and undistorted. A damaged bottle should be disposed of in sorted plastic waste.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 500 ml PET plastic bottle suitable for shampoo and shower gel?
Yes, the 500 ml PET plastic bottle is suitable for shampoos, shower gels, and liquid soaps. The material is suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and the larger volume matches preparations that are used up quickly. For thicker products, choose a closure that can dispense them — for example a pump or a disc-top cap — and test the combination in advance with your specific formulation.
Can a hot mixture be filled into a PET plastic bottle?
No, hot mixtures should not be filled into a PET plastic bottle. The material is heat-sensitive and the bottle may deform. The product must therefore be allowed to cool down before filling, ideally to room temperature. For the same reason, the bottle should not be disinfected with boiling water but with alcohol, and once filled it should be kept away from heat sources.
Is a transparent PET bottle suitable for preparations containing essential oils?
The transparent PET bottle is intended for finished cosmetic preparations in which essential oils are diluted, not for pure essential oils. Pure essential oils are among the substances to which plastic packaging should not be exposed. For preparations with a higher proportion of essential oils, a compatibility test lasting several weeks is recommended. The clear container also transmits light, so such preparations should be stored away from direct sunlight.
How much product fits in a 500 ml plastic bottle?
The plastic bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 500 ml, although its total brimful capacity is slightly larger. This extra space acts as a margin for the closure, the pump or sprayer tube, and for expansion of the contents when heated. When filling by weight, account for the density of the product, as 500 ml is not always 500 g.
Can the 500 ml PET plastic bottle be reused?
Yes, the 500 ml PET plastic bottle can be reused as long as it is undamaged and thoroughly cleaned. After emptying, wash it with lukewarm water and a detergent, rinse, disinfect with alcohol, and leave it to dry completely. A bottle showing scratches, cloudiness, deformation, or a lingering odour from previous contents is best discarded and handed over for sorted waste collection.
