Product description

The plastic cap 28/400 is a low closure made of HDPE for bottles with a 28 mm neck that does not separate from the bottle when opened. It stays attached to the neck, so you never need to set it aside while filling, pouring, or dispensing. It works wherever a bottle is opened frequently: home syrups, juices and oils, tonics, hydrolats, toners, liquid soaps, shampoos, or bath oils bottled in containers with this neck type.

The packaging is approved for direct contact with food as well as for use with cosmetic products, so one closure type covers both kitchen and cosmetic workshop applications.

Key features

  • Tethered design – the cap stays attached to the bottle after opening. It cannot fall behind the workbench, does not touch contaminated surfaces, and goes into recycling together with the bottle.
  • Low profile – the cap barely rises above the neck, keeping the bottle compact and easier to pack in boxes and postal packaging.
  • White colour – works neutrally with both clear and coloured fills, and pairs well with labels or coloured bottles.
  • HDPE – a lightweight, flexible, and shatterproof material that handles both water-based and oil-based fills as well as routine cleaning.
  • Food and cosmetic grade – the cap is declared suitable for direct contact with food as well as with cosmetic products.

Usage

The cap screws onto a bottle neck with the same thread type as stated in the product parameters. On first opening, the tamper-evident ring releases, but the cap does not detach completely. It hangs on the neck, and after pouring you simply close it again. The design is the same principle used on beverage bottles, here in a low-profile version.

Bottles with this neck type and ready-made bottle and cap combinations are available in the Handymade range. When combining parts yourself, we recommend verifying leak-tightness with your specific bottle and fill, as sealing depends on both components together, not on the cap alone.

Fill the bottle to its nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the volume for which the bottle is designed under normal filling conditions. The total internal volume up to the neck is greater, and the difference serves as a reserve for the closure and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. An overfilled bottle forces the contents into the thread and the cap will then appear to leak even when nothing is wrong with it.

Good to know

Before first use, wash the cap in warm water with a standard cleaning agent, or disinfect with isopropanol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. Residual water in the thread could shorten the shelf life of a cosmetic fill.

Reuse is perfectly fine with HDPE as long as neither the thread nor the connection to the tamper-evident ring is damaged. With rough handling the connecting band can break. The cap will still seal; it simply behaves like a standard separate closure from that point on.

Tightening: a plastic cap needs only to be tightened by hand until you feel resistance. Over-tightening does not improve the seal and can deform the neck of a softer bottle.

Material and fill: HDPE handles water-based, alcohol-based, and oil-based fills well. With fills containing a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend checking whether the surface or scent of the cap changes after a few weeks.

Labelling and recycling: a label is not normally applied to a low-profile cap; all product information belongs on the bottle body. After use, the cap goes together with the bottle into plastic waste — HDPE is a recyclable material.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean that the cap 28/400 is tethered?
A tethered cap remains attached to the bottle neck after opening via a tamper-evident ring and a connecting band. On first opening the ring releases, the cap flips to the side, and after pouring you push it back onto the thread. The advantage is that it cannot get lost during work, does not fall onto the work surface, and stays with the bottle at recycling.
Which bottles does the plastic cap 28/400 fit?
The cap fits bottles with a 28 mm neck and the same thread type as stated in the product parameters. Not every 28 mm neck has the same thread, so compare the thread type with your bottle before purchasing, or choose a ready-made bottle and cap combination from the Handymade range where leak-tightness has already been verified.
Is the white cap 28/400 suitable for food?
Yes, the cap is declared suitable for direct contact with food under normal conditions of use, and also for use with cosmetic products. You can use it to close home syrups, juices, oils, or herbal extracts just as well as tonics, hydrolats, or liquid soaps. The declaration of conformity is available on the product page.
Can a tethered cap be washed and reused?
Yes, an HDPE cap can be washed in warm water with a cleaning agent, disinfected with alcohol, and reused after drying. Only reuse it when the thread is undamaged and the cap seals properly on the bottle. If the connecting band breaks, the cap still seals — it is simply no longer tethered.
Is the plastic cap 28/400 suitable for oils and alcohol-based fills?
Yes, HDPE handles water-based, alcohol-based, and oil-based fills, making the cap suitable for bath and massage oils, tinctures, alcohol-based tonics, and hydrolats. With fills containing a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend verifying compatibility directly with your formulation over several weeks, as the result depends on the specific composition.
Why is the cap leaking?
The most common cause of leaking is a mismatched thread type on the bottle neck or an overfilled bottle. The cap seals only on a neck with the same thread type as stated in the parameters, and the bottle should be filled to its nominal volume, not to the brim. Tightening by hand until you feel resistance — without force that could deform the neck — also helps.
