Product description

Plastic sprayer with smoke-tinted cap is a pump-and-nozzle closure that turns the liquid contents of a bottle into a fine mist. It fits bottles and vials with a neck thread of 18/415, making it suitable for the smaller volumes typical of tonics, hydrolats, facial and hair mists, room fresheners, or alcohol-based sprays. The black body and dark transparent cap give the packaging a uniform look. The cap also protects the nozzle from dust and accidental activation.

The sprayer is made from polypropylene (PP), which tolerates both aqueous and alcohol-based contents. The packaging material is suitable for use with cosmetic products; a statement of suitability is available on the product page.

Key features

  • Fine mist – each press releases a small, even dose. Application to the face or hair is gentle, drip-free, and conserves the contents even with frequent use.
  • Smoke-tinted cap – the dark transparent cap covers the sprayer head, protecting it from dirt and preventing accidental dispensing in a bag or during transport.
  • Durable material – polypropylene does not react with water, hydrolats, or common concentrations of ethanol, making it suitable for alcohol-based tonics and perfume waters as well.
  • Trimmable dip tube – the dip tube is long enough for standard 18/415 neck vials and can be easily cut to the height of a specific bottle.

Use in formulation

The sprayer works reliably with low-viscosity liquids, meaning fluids with a consistency close to water: hydrolats, tonics, facial and body mists, hair sprays with a low content of film-forming ingredients, textile fresheners, alcohol-based disinfectant sprays, and perfume waters. Light solutions with solubilised essential oils are also suitable, provided the solution is clear and free of sediment.

With oils, thick tonics containing a thickener, or emulsions, the sprayer will not produce a mist. The contents will either jet out in a stream or the pump will clog quickly. For such products a different type of closure is more appropriate, such as a dropper or a pump designed for thicker contents.

The sprayer is not intended for oils, emulsions, gels, or liquids containing solid particles (scrubs, glitter, undissolved extracts). Solid particles will block the nozzle and thick contents cannot be atomised into a mist.

When filling the bottle, allow space for the dip tube and pump mechanism. The bottle should be filled to the nominal volume stated in its specifications, not to the brim. Otherwise the contents will be pushed out of the neck when the sprayer is screwed on.

Good to know

Before first use we recommend flushing the sprayer with clean water, or alternatively with alcohol, and allowing it to dry. Once fitted to the bottle, the pump needs to be pressed several times until the dip tube fills and a mist forms. This is normal behaviour, not a fault.

Trim the dip tube so that it reaches just above the bottom of the bottle, and cut it at an angle. A straight-cut tube may suction to the bottom, causing the sprayer to draw in air instead of liquid.

Each press draws air into the bottle. Aqueous contents must therefore be reliably preserved, just as with any other open packaging. Alcohol-based contents with a sufficient proportion of ethanol generally do not require a preservative, but the formulation manufacturer must assess this for the specific recipe.

After a prolonged period of non-use the nozzle may become blocked by dried-out ingredients, particularly with hair sprays containing film-forming agents. Spraying it with warm water or alcohol will help. When changing the contents we recommend using a new unit to avoid mixing fragrances and ingredients.

Ready-made bottle and sprayer combinations as well as individual 18/415 neck vials are available in the Handymade range. When assembling your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal and the behaviour of the specific formulation in the sprayer before filling a larger batch.

The packaging is plastic and, once emptied and rinsed, should be placed in sorted plastic waste.

Frequently asked questions

Which bottles does the 18/415 plastic sprayer fit?
The sprayer fits all bottles and vials with an 18/415 neck thread regardless of material, meaning both glass and plastic. The designation 18/415 is the thread type listed in the specifications of every bottle in the Handymade range. It is enough to ensure they match. The sprayer does not fit necks with a different thread, such as 20/410 or 24/410.
Can the plastic sprayer be used with a facial or body oil?
No, the 18/415 sprayer is not suitable for oils. Oils are too thick to be atomised into a mist through a small nozzle. They will jet out in a stream and the pump will eventually clog. For dispensing oils, a dropper or a pump designed for thicker contents is appropriate.
Is the plastic sprayer suitable for alcohol-based tonics and perfume waters?
Yes, the polypropylene from which the sprayer is made tolerates ethanol and alcohol-based solutions commonly used in cosmetics. It is therefore suitable for alcohol-based tonics, perfume waters, room fresheners, and disinfectant sprays. At high concentrations of essential oils in alcohol we recommend a test fill and inspection after several weeks to check that the nozzle and seals have not changed in any way.
Why does the plastic sprayer not spray after being fitted to the bottle?
The most common cause is an unfilled dip tube. After first fitting, the pump needs several presses to draw up the contents. If no mist forms even then, check that the dip tube reaches into the liquid and has not been suctioned to the bottom due to a straight cut. With thick contents or sediment the nozzle may be blocked; rinse it with warm water.
How do I shorten the dip tube for a smaller bottle?
Cut the dip tube with sharp scissors at an angle so that it reaches just above the bottom of the bottle. Before cutting, hold it against the bottle and measure the distance from the neck to the bottom. The tube should be slightly shorter so it does not kink. An angled cut prevents suctioning to the bottom and allows the sprayer to draw liquid right until the bottle is fully empty.
How do I clean the plastic sprayer before reuse?
Spray warm water through the sprayer several times, then alcohol, and allow it to dry completely. Cleaning removes residues of the previous contents from both the dip tube and the nozzle. With fragranced products, however, some scent remains in the plastic, so when changing the contents we recommend using a new sprayer.
