Product description

A plastic flip-top cap for bottles with a 28/410 neck thread is a closure designed for easy dispensing of liquid and semi-liquid products. It opens with a single thumb movement, the contents are pressed out through a small opening, and the lid snaps back shut — making it fully one-handed to use, even in the shower or at the sink. Ideal for products dispensed in small amounts and used frequently, from shampoos to body lotions.

The cap is made from polypropylene (PP), a lightweight and flexible plastic that withstands repeated hinge opening without cracking. The packaging material is suitable for use with cosmetic products and is also approved for direct food contact, so it can be used for household oils, syrups or dressings in a bottle with the same neck size.

Why choose a flip top

  • One-handed dispensing – the lid flips open with the thumb and snaps shut after use; no unscrewing or setting the cap aside.
  • Controlled amount – contents flow through a small opening rather than the full neck, making it easier to dispense into the palm and reducing waste.
  • Protected opening – the closed lid shields the dispensing hole from dust and water, which is especially practical in the shower.
  • No metal parts – the closure is made from a single plastic, with no spring or metal ball like pumps, so it will not jam or corrode.
  • Neutral white – the opaque colour looks clean on both white and coloured bottles and does not highlight product residue around the opening.
  • Durable material – polypropylene will not shatter on impact, does not absorb moisture and can be washed repeatedly.

Which products and bottles it suits

The flip top is intended for products fluid enough to be pressed through the opening, yet not so thin that they flow out on their own once the lid is open. It works best with shampoos, shower gels, liquid soaps, conditioners, body and cleansing milks or lighter gels. It can also be used with body and massage oils, though bear in mind that oil flows faster than gel and the dose will be larger.

It is less suitable for thick creams and butters that cannot be pushed through a small opening. For very thin water-based products such as tonics or facial waters, a spray pump or disc top provides more precise dispensing. It is not intended for spraying, nor as the sole seal for a bottle during extended transport.

The cap fits bottles with a 28/410 neck thread. Bottles with this neck and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. When assembling your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dose size and closure behaviour with your specific formulation, as the same thread type does not guarantee identical fit across every bottle manufacturer.

Before filling a full batch, carry out a test with one bottle. Fill it with the product, close it, lay it on its side and check for several hours whether any contents leak around the thread or from the lid. Fill the bottle to the nominal volume — the declared product volume — not to the brim. The total bottle volume is larger, and the headspace above the liquid acts as an air buffer so the product does not squirt out of the opening when squeezed.

Good to know

Before the first fill, it is recommended to wash the cap with warm water and a mild detergent, or to disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely. The same procedure applies when reusing the cap. At that point, check that the lid hinge is not cracked and that the lid still snaps firmly shut. Store caps in a dry, clean environment until filling.

Polypropylene resists the majority of cosmetic ingredients. With anhydrous products containing a high proportion of essential oils, fragrance compositions, or contents with solvents, we recommend verifying the closure's behaviour in the finished formulation — in particular, softening of the material or colour change with prolonged contact.

The lid snaps shut firmly, but under greater pressure in luggage it may open. For travel, we recommend placing the bottle in a resealable bag. The closure is made from a single type of plastic and, once washed, belongs in the sorted plastic waste stream.

The lid can be flipped open even with wet or soapy hands. This is precisely why flip tops are used more often than screw caps for shower and hair care products.

Frequently asked questions

Which bottles fit the plastic flip-top cap 28/410?
The cap fits bottles with a 28/410 thread, which is the standard neck for larger cosmetic bottles for shampoos and shower gels. The number 28 denotes the neck diameter in millimetres and 410 the thread profile. It does not fit bottles with a 24/410 or 18/410 neck, even though they look similar. The neck type of a bottle is listed in its specifications.
Is a flip-top cap suitable for thick creams or butters?
No, a flip top is not suitable for thick creams and body butters, as they cannot be pressed through the small opening and tend to remain in the neck. It is designed for liquid and semi-liquid products such as shampoos, gels, milks and oils. For thick textures, a jar, pot or wide-mouth bottle with a screw cap is a better choice.
Is the white flip-top cap also suitable for food use?
Yes, the packaging material is approved for direct food contact under normal conditions of use and also meets the requirements for cosmetic packaging. The cap can therefore be used, for example, for household oils, syrups or dressings, provided the bottle is also food-grade. For a bottle-and-closure set, food-contact suitability applies only when both parts carry that approval.
Can the plastic flip-top cap be washed and reused?
Yes, the polypropylene cap can be washed with warm water and detergent, disinfected with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, and reused once dry. Before refilling, check the lid hinge and whether the lid still snaps shut firmly. If the hinge is cracked or the lid closes loosely, replace the closure.
Can I use a flip-top cap for oils and products with essential oils?
For body and massage oils, yes — just bear in mind that oil flows faster than gel and the dose will be larger. For anhydrous products with a high proportion of essential oils or fragrance compositions, we recommend verifying the closure's behaviour in the finished formulation, as concentrated fragrance materials may affect the plastic with prolonged contact.
Why does product leak from the bottle with the flip top when I set it down?
Most often because the bottle is filled to the brim or the product is too thin. When filled to the nominal volume, an air space remains above the liquid that buffers pressure on the opening. Thin water-based products such as tonics are difficult to control through a flip top — a spray pump or disc top is more appropriate for them. With any new bottle-and-closure combination, a leak test is recommended.
