An aluminium jar with lid, nominal volume 5 ml, is a small screw-top container for solid and anhydrous cosmetic products. Suitable for lip balms, solid perfumes, ointments, cuticle balms, cream samples, or small quantities of wax blends. Aluminium is lightweight, shatterproof, and opaque to light, protecting the contents from light better than clear glass or plastic. The packaging material is suitable for use with cosmetic products.

Suitable uses

Lip balms and solid balms – the small volume suits a pocket or handbag format, and the metal body does not deform in the warmth of the hand.
Solid perfumes – wax-and-oil compositions with essential oils or fragrance compounds are filled into metal, which, unlike some plastics, is not sensitive to solvents.
Samples and testers – five millilitres is enough to present a cream or butter to a customer; the container is lightweight and will not break in transit.
Ointments and treatment balms – herbal oil-and-wax ointments, hand balms, and beard balms.

Volume and filling

The nominal volume is the volume for which the jar is designed under standard filling conditions. The total brim volume is the physical capacity up to the top edge of the body and is slightly larger. The difference provides clearance for the lid and accounts for the behaviour of the contents: solid balms are poured warm and change volume slightly as they set, while soft ointments spread when the lid is screwed on. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim, so the contents do not clog the thread and the lid seats properly.

Pour balms and solid perfumes into the jar at a temperature just above the setting point of the blend, not piping hot. A smaller temperature differential produces a flatter surface without a central dip and reduces the risk of the contents pulling away from the walls as they cool.

Useful notes

The lid has an EPE liner (expanded polyethylene) that seats on the neck, preventing the contents from drying out and the oil fraction from seeping through. With softer balms we recommend verifying the seal with the specific formulation, especially if the container will be carried in a pocket.

The metal container is intended primarily for anhydrous formulations: oils, butters, waxes, solid perfumes, and ointments. With water-based emulsions or strongly acidic or alkaline products the contents may react with the metal, so verify compatibility with the finished formulation before larger-scale filling.

Before the first fill, wash the container, disinfect it, and allow it to dry completely. The jar withstands repeated washing and can be reused after thorough cleaning; however, the sealing liner in the lid wears over time.

Standard self-adhesive labels adhere well to the smooth metal surface.

Essential oils and fragrance compounds in a solid perfume will not damage the aluminium body, but may gradually soften the foam liner in the lid. With concentrated compositions, therefore, check the seal after a few weeks.

Can a cream or water-based emulsion be filled into an aluminium jar?

We do not recommend aluminium jars for long-term packaging of water-based emulsions without prior testing. Water, acidic pH, and electrolytes in the formulation can react with the metal, manifesting as a change in the colour or scent of the product. For short-use samples this is generally acceptable, but verify compatibility with the specific formulation.

Does an aluminium jar protect the contents from light?

Yes, aluminium is opaque to light, so the contents of the jar are protected from both UV radiation and visible light. This is an advantage for products containing vegetable oils, essential oils, and antioxidants, which degrade more quickly when exposed to light. For the same reason, the fill level is not visible without unscrewing the lid.

How should an aluminium jar be prepared before filling?

Before first use, wash the container with warm water and detergent, rinse, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow to dry completely. Residual water in an anhydrous balm would become a source of microbial contamination. The lid with its foam liner need only be wiped with alcohol and left to air dry.

Can an aluminium jar be reused?

Yes, the aluminium body withstands repeated washing and disinfection without changing shape. When reusing, check the condition of the sealing liner in the lid, which compresses over time and softens on contact with essential oils. If the liner no longer seals, the contents may dry out or seep through.
