Product description

The aluminium jar with lid 200 ml is a container for solid and thick cosmetic products scooped out with fingers or a spatula: balms, body butters, herbal salves, oil scrubs, and solid shampoos. Aluminium is lightweight, unbreakable, and opaque, making it more effective at blocking light than both clear and coloured glass.

The jar closes with a screw-on lid fitted with a soft foam polyethylene insert that seats against the rim and limits air exposure to the contents. Its low weight and resistance to breakage make it suitable for travel, gym bags, or shipping finished products by post.

Suitable product types

  • Balms and salves – melted mass is poured directly into the jar, where it sets to a level surface; the wide opening makes scooping easy right down to the bottom.
  • Body butters and whipped butters – the light-blocking container is ideal for formulations with plant oils and butters prone to oxidation.
  • Oil sugar scrubs – an unbreakable container is practical in the bathroom and shower, where glass poses a safety risk.
  • Solid shampoos, conditioners, and solid perfumes – the jar works as a travel case that keeps the bar from soiling other items.
  • Hair masks, pomades, and waxes – thick textures are easier to remove from a wide jar than from a narrow-necked container.

This type of container is not intended for thin liquids such as tonics, oils, or lotions. The screw lid with insert seals well for solid and thick contents, not for liquids that spill inside a bag.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume for which the container is designed under standard filling conditions. Total brim-full volume is the physical capacity of the jar up to the rim and is slightly higher. The difference provides clearance for the lid with its sealing insert and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The jar should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Overfilling will contaminate the thread during closing and force the insert into the product.

Volume in millilitres is not the same as weight in grams. We recommend determining the fill weight for your label by doing a test fill with your specific formulation.

What to know about filling and use

Before first use, wash the jar and lid with warm water and detergent, rinse, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow to dry completely. Moisture trapped under the lid shortens the shelf life of anhydrous products that would otherwise require no preservation.

Aluminium tolerates filling with warm molten mass but conducts heat quickly. A freshly filled jar therefore becomes hot immediately and must be handled with care. The lid should be closed only after the contents have cooled completely; otherwise condensation forms underneath and drips back onto the product surface.

Aluminium reacts with strongly alkaline and acidic substances. Fresh soap mass containing hydroxide does not belong in an aluminium container. For products containing water, with a significantly low or high pH, or with salt scrubs, we recommend testing the container with the specific formulation on a trial sample before full production.

Further practical notes:

  • Thin wall – the jar is lightweight, but may dent if dropped or squeezed firmly. Sturdier packing fill is worthwhile when shipping.
  • Sealing insert – the foam polyethylene insert may absorb the scent of the contents over time, particularly with products high in essential oils. Keep this in mind when reusing the lid for a different product.
  • Labelling – a label can be applied to the flat surface of the lid or around the side of the jar; the dimensions needed for label design are listed in the product specifications. Degrease the surface with alcohol before applying.
  • Contact with cosmetics – the container is suitable for use with cosmetic products; a declaration of conformity is included with the product. Suitability for food contact has not been confirmed for this jar.
  • Recycling – aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without loss of quality; remove the sealing insert before sorting for recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Does an aluminium jar protect the contents from light?
Yes, an aluminium jar is opaque and lets no light through to the contents. Compared to both clear and coloured glass, it provides more reliable light protection, which is beneficial for balms and butters containing plant oils sensitive to oxidation. It does not protect against heat, however: metal heats up quickly in sunlight and the contents may soften or melt.
Can hot balm or butter be poured into an aluminium jar?
Yes, melted balm or butter can be poured directly into an aluminium jar. Aluminium tolerates the temperatures typical in balm production, but the wall heats up immediately, so the filled jar must be handled with care. The lid should be fitted only after the contents have cooled and set completely, to prevent condensation forming underneath.
Is the 200 ml aluminium jar suitable for creams and water-containing products?
The aluminium jar is intended primarily for anhydrous and thick products; for creams and other water-containing products, compatibility should be verified in advance. Aluminium is sensitive to strongly acidic and alkaline environments as well as to higher salt content. It is recommended to fill a trial sample and monitor the condition of the inner wall, colour, and scent of the product for several weeks.
How many grams of product fit in a 200 ml jar?
It depends on the density of the product — 200 ml does not equal 200 g. Oil-based balms and butters are lighter than water, so filling to the nominal volume will yield less than 200 g. Whipped butter contains air, so the weight will be even lower. Sugar scrubs, by contrast, are heavier. The exact fill weight is best determined by a test fill and weighing with the specific formulation.
Can the aluminium jar with lid be reused?
Yes, the aluminium jar can be washed out and refilled after emptying. Residues of oils and waxes are removed with warm water and detergent, followed by disinfection with alcohol and thorough drying. Pay attention to the sealing insert in the lid, which may carry the scent of the previous contents, and to the thread, where product residues tend to accumulate. A dented jar will seal less effectively.
