Aluminium jar with lid, black, 60 ml

Aluminium jar with screw-on lid with a nominal volume of 60 ml is a packaging solution for solid and anhydrous cosmetic products that require full light protection. Suitable for balms, salves, solid perfumes, hair and beard waxes, and oil-based scrubs. Aluminium is lightweight and shatterproof; the black finish gives the packaging a uniform look and makes light or coloured labels stand out clearly.

The lid has an inner seal insert made of expanded polyethylene (EPE) that, when tightened, presses against the rim of the jar, preventing the contents from drying out and keeping moisture from getting in. The packaging is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration of suitability is available in the product parameters.

Why choose an aluminium jar

• Complete light protection – unlike clear or frosted glass, metal lets through no light at all, protecting the plant oils, butters, and essential oils in the product from oxidation.
• Low weight and durability – the jar will not shatter when dropped or during shipping, which is an advantage both for postal orders and for products that customers carry in a bag or backpack.
• Sealing lid – the EPE insert improves the seal at the closure, so the contents do not dry out and neither air nor moisture enters the jar.
• Low, wide shape – solid products are easy to scoop out of a shallow jar with a wide mouth using a finger or spatula, and the jar is equally easy to fill and clean.
• Recyclability – aluminium can be processed repeatedly without loss of properties.

Use in formulation

The aluminium jar is intended primarily for anhydrous products. These are fully compatible with aluminium and make full use of its light-protection properties.

The situation is different for water-based formulations (creams, gels, emulsions) and for products with a markedly acidic or alkaline pH. Aluminium can react with water and, in particular, with alkaline ingredients, which may result in discolouration of the contents, odour development, or pitting of the jar surface. A typical example is cream deodorants containing sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). For these product types, we always recommend carrying out a compatibility test with the finished formulation, ideally over several weeks at both ambient and elevated temperatures.

Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the quantity the jar is designed for under normal filling conditions; the total brim-full volume is the physical capacity right up to the mouth. The difference between them is a reserve for the lid with its sealing insert and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. For products poured hot, a slight drop in the surface level after solidification should also be accounted for. It is therefore advisable to fill slightly higher, but still below the level where the contents would come into contact with the lid insert after closing.

Suitable for products such as

• Balms and salves – nourishing balms for lips, hands, heels, or cuticles that are scooped out with a finger.
• Solid perfumes – wax-based compositions with essential oils or fragrance blends, where aluminium protects the scent from light.
• Waxes and pomades – styling products for hair and beard that benefit from the shallow jar shape.
• Body butters and solid oils – anhydrous products based on shea, cocoa, or mango butter.
• Small-format scrubs – oil-based sugar or salt scrubs in travel-size volumes.

Good to know

Preparation before first use. It is advisable to wash both the jar and the lid before use, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow to dry completely. Do not remove the EPE insert from the lid; simply wipe it with disinfectant and allow it to air out.

Hot filling. Aluminium conducts heat quickly, so a hot mass in the jar cools evenly and generally without surface cracking. It also means that a jar filled with hot balm will be hot on the outside as well. When working with hot fills, keep the jars on a tray and do not cover them until the contents have solidified.

Essential oils. Unlike plastics, metal does not react with or get degraded by essential oils — an advantage for solid perfumes. The sealing insert in the lid is more sensitive. For products with a high proportion of essential oils, check after several weeks whether the insert has changed shape.

Labelling. The black surface holds self-adhesive labels well and makes light-coloured labels stand out. Jar dimensions for label artwork are available in the product parameters.

Reuse. The jar can be reused after thorough cleaning and disinfection. Check the lid insert at the same time; if it is damaged or permanently deformed, the packaging will no longer seal reliably.
