Product description

An aluminium jar with a lid is a lightweight and shatterproof container for anhydrous and solid cosmetic products: balms, salves, body butters, waxes and solid perfumes. The black jar with a nominal volume of 100 ml is opaque, so the contents are protected from light. This is an advantage in formulations with vegetable oils and butters, which are prone to oxidation.

The low, wide shape makes it easy to fill with molten mass and to scoop out the finished product with fingers. The lid screws on with a threaded closure and has an EPE foam insert on the inside that sits against the rim of the jar to help seal it. The packaging is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration is provided in the product parameters.

Suitable product types

  • Balms and salves – anhydrous blends of oils, butters and waxes are poured into the jar while molten and set directly inside it.
  • Body butters and whipped butters – thick masses fill the wide jar easily and can be scooped out with ease.
  • Beard and hair waxes, solid perfumes – solid products that are scooped with a finger or applied from the surface can be used all the way to the bottom in a shallow jar.
  • Oil sugar scrubs – anhydrous scrubs based on oil and sugar; for salt scrubs, compatibility should be verified in advance.
  • Travel and gift packaging – aluminium is lightweight and will not shatter if dropped, making it practical where glass would be unsuitable.

Nominal and total volume

The jar has two volume figures. Nominal volume is the amount the container is designed for at standard fill. Total brim-full volume is the physical capacity of the jar to the rim and is listed in the parameters. The difference between the two provides a margin for the lid with its sealing insert and for expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The jar should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

Preparation and filling

Before first use, it is recommended to wash both the jar and the lid, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. The foam insert in the lid only needs to be wiped with a disinfectant — it should not be submerged.

Aluminium conducts heat quickly. When molten mass is poured in, the jar walls warm up immediately. It is therefore advisable to fill on a heat-resistant surface and to handle the jar only after it has cooled.

Put the lid on only after the contents have cooled and set completely. Closing the jar while the product is still warm causes moisture to condense on the inner surface of the lid, which increases the risk of microbial contamination in an anhydrous product.

Good to know

Aluminium is sensitive to strongly acidic and alkaline conditions and to salt in the presence of water. For creams and other water-containing products, for salt scrubs, and for formulations with a low or high pH, we recommend carrying out a stability test first to verify the behaviour of the contents in the container.

  • Mechanical durability – the jar will not shatter, but the thin aluminium wall can dent under strong pressure or impact. A dented thread makes the lid harder to tighten.
  • Cleaning – wash by hand in warm water with a gentle detergent. A dishwasher is not suitable, as alkaline detergents will dull and discolour the aluminium.
  • Labelling – a label is most commonly applied to the flat surface of the lid or around the circumference. Label dimensions for design purposes are listed in the parameters. Degrease the surface before applying the label.
  • Recycling – aluminium is a highly recyclable material; an empty, clean jar belongs in the sorted metal waste collection.

Frequently asked questions

Is an aluminium jar suitable for water-containing creams?
The aluminium jar is intended primarily for anhydrous products, and compatibility must be verified in advance for creams that contain water. Aluminium can react with acidic or alkaline aqueous environments and with salts. Before producing a larger batch, it is recommended to fill a test sample and monitor over several weeks whether the colour, scent or consistency of the contents or the surface of the container changes.
Can a hot, melted balm be poured directly into the aluminium jar?
Yes, melted balms, salves and butters are poured directly into the aluminium jar and set inside it. The metal heats up quickly, however, so filling should be done on a heat-resistant surface and the jar should only be moved after it has cooled. The lid with its foam insert should be put on only when the contents are completely cool and set, to prevent moisture from condensing underneath it.
Does the aluminium jar protect the contents from light?
Yes, the aluminium jar is opaque and does not allow light to reach the contents. This helps slow changes that light accelerates, such as the yellowing of vegetable oils and butters. The container does not, however, protect against oxidation by atmospheric oxygen, so for formulations with sensitive oils it makes sense to add an antioxidant, such as vitamin E.
How many grams of product fit into a 100 ml aluminium jar?
The aluminium jar is filled with 100 ml of product; the weight in grams depends on the density of the contents. Anhydrous balms and butters are lighter than water, so 100 ml weighs less than 100 g, and whipped butters weigh considerably less still. The most accurate way to determine the fill weight is to weigh a test jar filled to the nominal volume.
Can the aluminium jar be reused?
Yes, the aluminium jar can be reused provided it is not dented and the lid can be tightened properly. Before refilling, wash it by hand in warm water with a detergent, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry thoroughly. The sealing insert in the lid should also be checked; if it is soiled or damaged, the jar may no longer seal properly.
