Product description
Dark brown glass jar, 25 ml, black lid is a ready-made combination of a small jar in dark brown glass, a black plastic lid and an inner disc that fits directly onto the surface of the filling. Suitable for thick and semi-solid preparations in small volumes – eye and face creams, balms, solid serums, masks or product samples where you want to protect the contents from light while presenting them in packaging that sits comfortably in the hand. Dark glass reduces light exposure to the filling; the lid with disc limits contact between the contents and air between uses.
Why dark glass and what the inner disc does
Dark brown glass transmits significantly less light than clear glass. This is an advantage for fillings with sensitive ingredients – vegetable oils, butters, vitamins, essential oils or plant extracts. Light accelerates the oxidation of fats and the degradation of certain active substances, so dark packaging helps keep the scent, colour and efficacy of a preparation stable for longer. Glass is also chemically inert – it does not react with oils, essential oils or alcohol and does not absorb scents, so it can be used without concern even for strongly fragranced products.
Included in the set is an inner disc – a thin white plastic disk that is placed on the surface of the cream or balm after filling, before the jar is closed. The disc limits contact between the filling and the air under the lid, catches any imprint of the contents on the lid and during transport reduces the risk of thinner cream getting into the thread. The black lid has a sealing layer on the inside that, once tightened, sits on the rim of the neck and completes the closure of the set. The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. It is not declared for contact with food, so we recommend using it exclusively for cosmetic preparations.
Particularly suitable for
- Eye and face creams – the small volume matches the realistic consumption of a preparation with active ingredients that should be used up before its preservation is exhausted.
- Balms and salves – anhydrous preparations based on oils and butters benefit from light protection, which slows the yellowing of fats.
- Solid and cream serums, masks, local preparations – the wide neck allows comfortable scooping with a spatula or finger.
- Samples and travel sizes – the jar can easily be labelled and its appearance is identical to the larger sizes in the same range.
Nominal and total volume
The jar is filled to the nominal volume of 25 ml – that is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The total volume up to the rim of the neck is slightly larger. The difference provides a reserve for the inner disc and the sealing layer of the lid, as well as space for a slight change in the volume of the filling with temperature change. If the jar is filled right to the rim, the disc will push part of the contents into the thread, the lid will not seat cleanly and the packaging may become dirty on the outside.
Fill creams and emulsions cold or after cooling to the temperature at which they hold their shape. Place the disc on the surface only after the filling in the jar has set or stabilised – with liquid contents, air would get underneath it and the disc would shift when closing.
What is useful to know before filling
Before first use, we recommend washing and disinfecting both the jar and the lid with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allowing them to dry completely. Residual moisture in the packaging would introduce water into an anhydrous balm and create conditions for microbial growth; in a cream, it would dilute the preservation system along the container wall. The inner disc only needs to be wiped with ethanol and left to air.
Glass tolerates higher temperatures than plastic, but when pouring hot balms with a high wax content we recommend pre-warming the jar to at least room temperature and allowing the mass to cool slightly towards its setting point. Cold glass and a very hot mass carry the risk of thermal shock, and rapid cooling causes dips to form on the surface of the balm.
The lid is made of plastic, so do not clean it with boiling water and do not leave it in contact with neat essential oils or solvents. With cream alone this is not an issue – at most a trace of the contents will reach the lid – but concentrated essential oils can cause the plastic to turn dull over time.
The jar can be used repeatedly after thorough washing. When refilling with cosmetics, we recommend replacing the inner disc with a new one and checking that the sealing layer of the lid is not deformed. The smooth surface on the circumference of the jar and the surface of the lid are available for labelling. The empty jar goes in glass waste, the lid and disc in plastics – separate them before sorting.
Closures with the same neck type as stated in the parameters, as well as ready-made jar and closure combinations, are available in the Handymade range. For a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal and the behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation.
