Product description

The 3 ml jar with a screw-on clear lid is designed for small portions of cosmetics: samples of creams and balms, testers, solid perfumes, colour products or a measured single-use portion of a mask. The black base visually emphasises the contents and hides them from the sides, while the clear lid shows the colour and texture of the product from above. Both your customers and you can see at once what is inside.

The set is supplied as a ready-made pair: the jar and lid fit together, so there is nothing else to buy. The base is made of polystyrene (PS) and the lid of polypropylene (PP). Both parts are declared as suitable for direct contact with cosmetic products. This set is not approved for contact with food.

What the jar is suitable for

  • Samples and testers – a small portion of cream, gel serum or balm that you include with an order or give to a customer to try before buying a larger size.
  • Colour cosmetics – loose or pressed eyeshadows, pigments, mineral make-up and lip glosses. The black background makes light and pearlescent shades stand out well.
  • Anhydrous products – solid perfumes, massage balms, butters and wax blends that are left to set in the jar after being poured hot.
  • Single-use portions – a mask, scrub or treatment for one use at a beauty salon or in a gift pack.
  • Small jobs in the workshop – a measured portion of pigment, mica or active ingredient when preparing raw materials before production.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume of 3 ml is the amount the jar is designed for under normal filling. The brimful volume listed in the parameters is the physical volume up to the top edge. The difference is the headspace under the lid. For this reason, fill the jar to the nominal volume, not to the brim. With a full 3 ml, free space remains under the lid, so the contents are not pushed into the thread when closing and the lid stays clean.

Pour solid products into the jar only up to slightly below the edge of the thread and let them cool completely before closing. A lid screwed onto a mixture that is still warm may fog up, and the condensed water will remain in the product.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the jars and lids, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. After use they can be washed and filled again. For samples intended for customers, however, we always recommend new packaging.

The polystyrene the base is made of is more sensitive to essential oils and solvents. For products with a higher proportion of essential oils, for alcohol-based preparations or for oil-based perfumes, first fill one jar and check after several days whether the wall has turned dull, softened or become discoloured. Creams, butters, waxes and powder products do not normally cause this problem.

The jar is not designed to be filled with a hot mixture straight from the pot. Let melted waxes and butters cool slightly before pouring so that the plastic does not deform.

The clear lid lets light through; only the base is dark. For light-sensitive preparations, for example those with vitamin C or with unstable plant extracts, bear in mind that the jar does not fully protect the contents from light. Store such samples in a box or in the dark.

The lid seals by screwing on. For watery and thin products that could spill during transport, check the tightness with your specific formulation. Lids with the same neck type, listed in the parameters, and other ready-made combinations can be found in the Handymade range.

The base and lid are made of two different plastics, so separate them before sorting the waste.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 3 ml jar with a clear lid used for?
Most often for cosmetic samples and for small amounts of colour products. A volume of 3 ml corresponds to one or two applications of a cream or balm, which is enough to try the texture and scent. The black base with a clear lid also suits eyeshadows, pigments and glosses, because the colour of the product can be seen without opening the jar.
Can I pour hot balm or wax into the 3 ml jar?
Not straight from the pot; let the mixture cool slightly first. The base is made of polystyrene, which may deform or lose its gloss at high temperature. Pour the mixture when it is already thickening but still liquid. Screw on the lid only after the mixture has set and cooled completely, otherwise moisture will condense inside.
Is the 3 ml jar suitable for products with essential oils?
For a small amount of essential oils in a cream or balm, usually yes; for concentrated oil-based perfumes and alcohol-based preparations, we recommend a test. Polystyrene is more sensitive to essential oils and solvents than other plastics. Fill one jar, leave it for several days and check whether the wall has softened or turned dull.
Why is the 3 ml jar not filled to the brim?
The nominal volume of 3 ml already includes the headspace under the lid. The brimful volume is larger, but the extra space is there so that the contents are not pushed into the thread when closing. Filling to the nominal volume keeps the thread clean and allows the lid to be tightened firmly.
Can the 3 ml jar be washed and reused?
Yes, the jar and lid can be washed in warm water with detergent, disinfected with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and refilled once dry. We recommend the same procedure before the first filling. For samples intended for customers, new packaging is more suitable; reuse is better suited to your own testing of recipes in the workshop.
Does the black 3 ml jar protect the contents from light?
Only partly. The black base blocks light from the sides and from below, but the clear lid lets it through from above. For products that lose effectiveness or change colour in light, keep the jars in a box or in the dark. For ordinary creams, balms and colour cosmetics, this solution is sufficient, and the product remains visible without opening.
