Product description

This blue glass medicine bottle, 5 ml, with a roller ball and a black cap, is intended for small packs of oil-based and perfume preparations applied directly to the skin. Blue glass lets through less light than clear glass, which helps protect essential and vegetable oils. The metal ball dispenses the contents in small amounts without pouring or dripping. The whole set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetics; you can find the declaration of conformity with the product.

What it is suited for

A small-volume roll-on is intended for preparations that are applied to a specific spot or in a small amount at a time. Thanks to its size, it fits into a handbag or pocket, and it is also suitable as a sample or gift pack.

  • Perfume oils – a fragrance composition diluted in a carrier oil is applied to the wrists, neck or behind the ears. The ball spreads exactly as much as is needed.
  • Essential oil blends – essential oils diluted in a carrier oil for application to the temples, wrists or soles of the feet.
  • Eye area oil serums – the cool metal ball helps to gently massage in a small amount of oil.
  • Cuticle care – nail oil is applied directly to the cuticle without a dropper or brush.
  • Spot treatments – cosmetic oils or alcohol-based preparations intended for small areas of skin.

How to use a roll-on

The bottle is filled without the roller ball fitted, ideally with a small funnel or a syringe. After filling, the plastic insert with the metal ball is pressed into the neck so that it seats around the whole circumference, and the set is closed with the cap. When pressed in, the insert displaces part of the volume, so the bottle is not filled up to the neck.

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for under normal filling. The physical volume of the glass up to the brim is slightly larger, and the difference provides a reserve for the insert with the ball and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

Before the first filling, wash the bottle, rinse it with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and let it dry completely. Residual moisture can cloud an oil-based preparation and shorten its shelf life.

The ball turns in a plastic seat and the contents press against it from the inside. With very thin, watery preparations, the contents may leak around the ball, while with thick and waxy ones the ball may not turn. Liquid oils and oil-based or alcohol-based solutions with low viscosity work best.

We always recommend testing how the roll-on behaves with your specific formulation. Fill one bottle, leave it for several days, including lying on its side, and check the tightness of the cap and the smooth turning of the ball.

Good to know

Blue glass shades the contents only partially, so store the bottle away from direct sunlight.

The plastic insert with the ball and the cap are made of polypropylene, and the ball is made of steel. With concentrated essential oils or solvents, we recommend testing the compatibility with the plastic parts on one bottle.

The set is intended for cosmetics, that is, preparations applied to the skin. It is not approved for contact with food.

The bottle can be reused. Pry the insert with the ball out around the edge with a flat tool, wash the glass in warm water with a cleaning product and disinfect it with ethanol. After removal, the insert often loses its tightness, so for repeated filling it is better to replace it with a new one.

The cap and the insert with the ball are part of the set. You can find other closures with the same neck type for the bottle sold on its own in the Handymade range.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 5 ml roll-on bottle suitable for perfume oil?
Yes, perfume oil is one of the most common uses of this set. A fragrance composition diluted in a liquid carrier oil, such as jojoba or fractionated coconut oil, has a viscosity suitable for the ball to turn and for the contents not to leak. The blue glass also limits the light reaching the fragrance components. We recommend testing the tightness with your specific blend on one bottle.
Can an alcohol-based preparation be filled into a 5 ml roll-on?
Alcohol-based preparations can be filled into a roll-on, but they are thinner than oils and require a tightness test. With very thin contents, a small amount may leak around the ball, especially when stored lying on its side. We therefore recommend testing the set with an alcohol-based preparation before larger production and storing the finished bottles upright.
How is a 5 ml roll-on bottle filled and how much does it hold?
It is filled to the nominal volume of 5 ml without the insert with the ball fitted, ideally with a syringe or a small funnel. When pressed into the neck, the insert displaces part of the contents, so the bottle is never filled to the brim. After the insert is pressed in, the set is closed with the cap and checked to make sure the ball turns freely.
Does the blue glass of the roll-on protect the contents from light?
Partially, yes. Blue glass lets through less light than clear glass, which is why it is chosen for preparations with essential and vegetable oils. It does not provide complete protection, so it is advisable to store the bottle away from direct sunlight. For light-sensitive preparations, blue glass is a better choice than clear glass.
Can a 5 ml roll-on bottle be reused?
Yes, after washing and disinfection with ethanol, the glass bottle can be filled again. The insert with the ball has to be pried out, which tends to stretch it, and after it is pressed back in it may no longer seal. For repeated filling, we therefore recommend using a new insert with a ball and the original cap.
Is the 5 ml roll-on set suitable for thick oils or balms?
No, thick oils, butters and balms are not suitable for a roll-on. The ball turns only when the contents flow freely to it; with a thick mass it gets stuck and the preparation is not dispensed. A jar or a medicine bottle with a dropper is better suited to such preparations, while a roll-on is intended for liquid oils and thin solutions.
