Product description

Brown glass bottle 250 ml is a container for liquid and semi-liquid products that need protection from light. Brown glass absorbs UV radiation and part of the visible light spectrum. This slows down changes in colour, scent and quality of sensitive ingredients, such as vegetable oils, essential oils and herbal extracts. Glass does not react with the contents and is impermeable to air and scent.

This volume is suitable for products used in larger amounts and for stock packaging. The container is also suitable for direct contact with food, making it useful for home-made oils, syrups or herbal infusions.

Why choose brown glass

  • Light protection – dark glass limits exposure to radiation that accelerates the oxidation of oils and the degradation of certain active substances and pigments.
  • Chemical resistance – glass tolerates essential oils, alcohol, acidic and mildly alkaline solutions. Unlike some plastics, it does not soften and does not absorb the scent of the contents.
  • Impermeability – water, alcohol and volatile fragrance components do not pass through the glass wall, and oxygen cannot enter. The overall seal then depends solely on the closure.
  • Reusability – the smooth surface is easy to wash and disinfect, so the bottle can be refilled.

What products it is suitable for

The bottle is suitable for water-based, alcohol-based and oil-based contents. In cosmetics, it is most commonly used for:

  • Body, massage and hair oils – blends of vegetable oils with essential oils are sensitive to light and oxidation; dark glass helps them retain freshness.
  • Hydrolats, facial waters and tonics – the larger volume is practical for everyday-use products or as a stock pack for refilling smaller bottles.
  • Macerates and tinctures – glass will not affect the extract even after prolonged contact with oil or alcohol.
  • Shampoos, shower gels and liquid soaps – the wider neck makes filling thicker products easier.

The suitability of the container for contact with cosmetic products and food is based on its technical documentation. The wording of the declaration is given in the product parameters.

Nominal and total volume

Containers are described by two volumes. Nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed to hold during normal filling. Total brim-full volume is the physical volume up to the neck and is always slightly larger. The difference between them is a reserve for the closure, which extends into the neck, and for the expansion of the contents with temperature change. The exact values of both volumes are given in the product parameters.

Fill the bottle to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The headspace below the neck will prevent the contents from being forced out when closing and from overflowing as the contents expand in warmth.

Choosing a closure

The bottle is supplied without a closure. Closures with the same neck type as stated in the parameters, and ready-made bottle and closure combinations, are available in the Handymade range. For a custom combination, we recommend checking the seal, dispensing and container behaviour with the specific formulation. The simplest approach is to leave the filled and closed bottle lying on its side for a few days.

What to know before filling

Before first use, wash the bottle with warm water and a cleaning agent, rinse thoroughly and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Allow it to dry completely before filling. Residual water can cause cloudiness in oil-based products and places an additional burden on the preservation of water-based ones.

Glass does not tolerate sudden temperature changes. When filling hot contents, pre-warm the bottle. Do not rinse a hot bottle with cold water or place it on a cold surface, as it may crack.

Brown glass protects the contents from light, but does not replace proper preservation of water-based products or an antioxidant in oil blends.

The cylindrical body takes labels well; label dimensions for design are given in the parameters. Apply labels to a dry and degreased surface. Glass is fully recyclable.

Frequently asked questions

Does a brown glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, brown glass absorbs UV radiation and part of the visible light spectrum, which accelerate the oxidation of oils and the degradation of sensitive ingredients. The contents therefore retain their colour and scent longer than in clear glass. However, the protection is not complete. Products with highly sensitive ingredients should be kept out of direct sunlight.
How much product fits in the 250 ml glass bottle?
The glass bottle is designed to hold 250 ml, which is its nominal volume. Physically, slightly more fits up to the brim. This space, however, serves as a reserve for the closure and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. If filled to the brim, the contents would overflow when closing.
Is the 250 ml brown glass bottle suitable for food as well?
Yes, the 250 ml brown glass bottle is suitable for direct contact with both food and cosmetic products under normal and intended conditions of use. It can be used for home-made syrups, oils, vinegars or herbal infusions. For hot-fill food products, the bottle must be pre-warmed to prevent the glass from cracking due to sudden temperature changes.
Can essential oils and alcohol-based tinctures be filled into the brown glass bottle?
Yes, glass is resistant to essential oils, alcohol and vegetable oils and does not react with them even after prolonged contact. Unlike some plastics, it does not soften and does not absorb scent. With such contents, the chemical resistance of the closure should be verified, as its plastic components and seals may be more sensitive than the bottle itself.
Can the 250 ml glass bottle be reused?
Yes, the glass bottle can be refilled after thorough cleaning. Wash it with warm water and a cleaning agent; a bottle brush helps with oil residue. Then rinse it, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely. It is advisable to inspect the closure each time it is refilled and to replace it when worn.
What closure is suitable for the 250 ml brown glass bottle?
Any closure with the same neck type as stated in the product parameters is suitable for the 250 ml brown glass bottle. The choice depends on the contents, as thin liquids and thick products require different dispensing methods. For a custom bottle and closure combination, we recommend testing the seal with the specific product before filling a larger batch.
