Product description

The black glossy glass bottle with a volume of 100 ml and a roll-on closure is used for applying liquid products directly to the skin without using your hands. Black glass protects the contents from light, so it is particularly suitable for massage and body oils, aromatherapy blends with essential oils, liquid roll-on deodorants or cooling products for tired feet and muscles. Compared with small roll-on bottles for the temples or wrists, a volume of 100 ml is enough to treat larger areas of the body.

The set consists of a glass bottle, a steel ball in a clear plastic ball holder and a black plastic cap with an 18/410 neck finish. The whole set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food; the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics.

How the roll-on dispenses

The ball rotates as it moves across the skin and picks up a thin layer of the contents. Dispensing is even, without dripping, and you control the amount by the number of strokes. The steel ball feels noticeably cool on the skin and also allows a light massage, which is useful for products for the feet, back or shoulders.

The roll-on works with liquid and low-viscosity formulations: oils, oil blends, tonics, thin emulsions and light gels. Thick creams, butters and viscous gels will not pass through the ball or will clog it. For a gel consistency, we recommend testing a small amount to check that the contents roll smoothly.

Filling and volume

The nominal volume of 100 ml is the volume the bottle is designed for under normal filling. The total volume to the brim, given in the parameters, is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference leaves room for the ball holder and for the contents to expand when the temperature changes. Fill up to the nominal volume. If the bottle is overfilled, part of the contents is pushed out when the holder is pressed in.

Pour in the formulation once it has cooled, ideally through a funnel with a narrow neck. Then press the ball holder into the neck straight and with enough force until it sits fully around the whole circumference, and only then screw on the cap.

You cannot see the fill level through black glass, so fill using a measuring cylinder or on a scale. The amount left in a bottle in use can also be estimated only by weight.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – wash the bottle in warm water with washing-up liquid, rinse it, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave it to dry completely with the neck facing down. Rinse the ball holder in the same way and dry it well, as residual water in the holder would get into oil-based contents. Disinfection is particularly important for anhydrous oil blends, to which no preservative is added.
  • Reuse – the glass withstands thorough washing and disinfection. We recommend replacing the ball holder when you change the contents, as residues of the previous contents are hard to wash out of it.
  • Plastic and concentrated substances – both the ball holder and the cap are made of polypropylene. Diluted blends of essential oils in a carrier oil are a standard use, but for undiluted essential oils or solvents we recommend checking how the plastic behaves in the specific formulation.
  • Glass and heat – do not pour hot contents into a cold bottle or the other way round, as a sudden change in temperature can damage the glass.
  • Closures – you will find other closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. If you make your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness, the dispensing and how the packaging behaves with the specific formulation.
  • Recycling – glass goes with glass; before disposal, separate the plastic cap and the ball holder from the bottle and sort them as plastic.

The tightness of the roll-on depends on the ball holder being seated correctly and the cap being tightened. Before transport or travel, turn the bottle upside down and check that the contents do not leak around the ball.

Frequently asked questions

Does black glass protect the contents of the roll-on bottle from light?
Yes, black opaque glass does not let light through, so the contents are protected from its effects. It is therefore suitable for vegetable oils and essential oil blends, which are sensitive to light. The disadvantage is that you cannot see the fill level or any change in the colour of the contents through the glass.
Can the 100 ml roll-on bottle be used for water-based contents, such as a tonic?
Yes, the roll-on also dispenses water-based and alcohol-based liquids, so it works with contents other than oils. A water-based product needs preservation like any formulation containing water, and we recommend checking how the steel ball behaves with the specific recipe. Oils roll more smoothly, while thin water-based liquids may run slightly under stronger pressure.
How much can the 100 ml roll-on bottle hold?
Fill it up to the nominal volume of 100 ml. The total volume to the brim is larger and you will find it in the parameters, but this reserve is taken up by the ball holder and by the contents as the temperature changes. If the bottle is overfilled, part of the contents is pushed out when the holder is pressed in.
Is the 100 ml glass roll-on bottle also suitable for food?
No, the set as a whole is intended for cosmetics. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food; the plastic cap and the ball holder do not have one. For homemade oils or syrups, use a bottle with a different closure that has a food-contact certificate.
Can the ball holder be removed and the roll-on bottle refilled?
Yes, the holder can be prised out with a flat object slipped under its edge, and the bottle can be refilled repeatedly. When you put it back, the holder must sit straight around the whole circumference, otherwise the roll-on will not seal. When you change the contents, we recommend fitting a new ball holder.
