Product description
A black glass bottle with a capacity of 15 ml is designed for contents that need to remain protected from light. The opaque black glass blocks light entirely, making it particularly suitable for products that lose their efficacy or change colour and scent when exposed to light. The small volume makes it ideal for concentrates that are dispensed drop by drop or in small amounts.
It is suitable for facial serums, oil serums and elixirs with active ingredients, essential oil blends, tinctures and alcohol-based extracts, perfume oils and concentrates, as well as samples or travel sizes of thinner cream products. Glass is chemically resistant and does not react with the contents, making it equally suitable for water-based, alcohol-based and oil-based formulations. The packaging is suitable for direct contact with food and with cosmetic products, so it can also be used for homemade herbal oils, syrups or aromatic essences in the kitchen.
Key benefits
- Light protection – opaque black glass helps maintain the stability of essential oils, vitamins, plant extracts and unsaturated oils, which oxidise quickly when exposed to light.
- Chemical resistance – glass does not absorb fragrance or colourants and does not react with alcohol, acidic solutions or concentrated essential oils, which can degrade certain plastics.
- Small volume for concentrates – 15 ml corresponds to a standard serum or essential oil blend size, meaning the contents are used up before they have time to degrade.
- Glossy black surface – creates a uniform, elegant appearance, conceals the contents and any sediment, and provides an excellent contrast for light or gold labels.
- Food-grade and cosmetic-grade quality – suitability for contact with food and cosmetics is supported by the packaging's technical documentation, so the bottle handles both cosmetic and culinary applications.
Nominal and total volume
Two figures are distinguished for packaging. The nominal volume is the quantity the bottle is intended for under standard filling conditions, and this is the figure stated on the finished product label. The total volume to the brim is the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference between the two provides headspace for the closure, the glass tube of a dropper or the tube of a pump, and for expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Specific values can be found in the product parameters.
When filling with a dropper, bear in mind that the glass tube displaces some of the contents upward when inserted. If the bottle is filled right up to the neck, the contents will overflow when closing and contaminate the thread, causing a poorer seal.
Closures and combinations
The bottle has an 18/410 thread, the most common neck type for small glass packaging. Closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. When assembling your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing performance and behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation. This applies especially to alcohol-based contents, which wick easily through threads, and to thicker oils, which flow slowly through a dropper.
What is good to know
Preparation before first use. Before use, wash the new packaging with warm water and a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or 70% ethanol and leave to dry completely with the neck facing down. Residual water would dilute anhydrous products and create conditions for microbial growth.
Labelling. The flat section of the body on a 15 ml bottle is relatively narrow, so plan for a slim label. White, metallic or transparent labels with light printing show up best on glossy black glass. Label dimensions suitable for this bottle can be found in the parameters.
Glass and temperature. Glass does not tolerate thermal shock. Do not fill hot contents into a cold bottle, and do not move a filled bottle directly from cold to warm surroundings. Dark glass also heats up quickly in direct sunlight, which is detrimental to the contents despite the light protection.
Recycling. Glass belongs in the glass recycling stream; unscrew the closure before disposal and sort it separately according to its material.
When producing smaller batches, fill the bottles just before sealing and close them immediately after filling. The shorter the contents remain open, the less air and moisture enters, which is just as important for active ingredients sensitive to oxidation as protection from light.
