Product description

The 30 ml glass roll-on bottle, made of green glass, is used to apply liquid products directly to the skin: perfume oils, essential oil blends diluted in a carrier oil, and thin oil serums. The set includes a bottle shaped like a medicine bottle, a steel roller ball in a clear plastic fitment and a black cap, so it is ready to use as soon as it is filled. Green glass lets through less light than clear glass, so light-sensitive contents are better protected. All three components of the set are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

As the roller ball glides over the skin, it leaves a thin layer of the product, so dispensing is economical and your fingers do not touch the contents. A volume of 30 ml lasts for a long time, yet the bottle is still small enough for a handbag or pocket.

What it is used for

  • Perfume oils – anhydrous oil-based fragrances applied to the wrists, neck or behind the ears; the roller ball applies a small amount without spilling.
  • Aromatherapy blends – essential oils diluted in a carrier oil, such as jojoba or almond oil, for the temples, wrists or nape of the neck.
  • Eye area oil serums – thin oils and light oil blends; the cooling touch of the steel ball is pleasant when applying to delicate skin.
  • Thin water-based and gel products – toners or light gels, provided their viscosity allows the ball to rotate freely.

Filling and volume

The bottle is designed to be filled to its nominal volume of 30 ml. The brimful capacity, meaning the physical volume up to the neck, is larger and you will find it in the specifications. The difference between these two values is a reserve for the roller ball fitment, which reaches into the neck when fitted, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. If the bottle were filled to the brim, some of the contents would spill out when the fitment is pressed in and the roll-on might not seal properly.

After filling, press the roller ball fitment into the neck evenly around its entire circumference until it is fully seated, then screw on the cap. We recommend checking the seal by turning the filled bottle upside down for a few minutes, especially with thin oils.

Fit the roller ball fitment only after filling. If you press it in earlier, the contents are difficult to dispense through the ball and filling takes a long time.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle, fitment and cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow them to dry completely. Residual water in an oil-based product shortens its shelf life and, in water-based products without a preservative, promotes the growth of microorganisms.

The roll-on is designed for products with low viscosity. Thick creams, balms or gels with a higher proportion of thickener cannot be dispensed with the roller ball – the contents get stuck behind it or are applied unevenly. If you are not sure, test how the formulation behaves in a single bottle before filling a larger batch.

The roller ball fitment and the cap are made of polypropylene (PP). For blends with a high proportion of essential oils or with solvents, such as a higher alcohol content, we recommend checking how the plastic behaves with the specific formulation. Blends diluted in a carrier oil are commonly used in roll-on bottles.

Do not fill the glass with hot contents. Allow blends containing melted wax or butters to cool before filling. A sudden change in temperature can damage the glass, and thick setting blends cannot be applied with a roller ball anyway.

The bottle can be washed and reused. The roller ball fitment can be removed and rinsed, but when switching to contents with a different fragrance, traces of the old fragrance are difficult to remove from the plastic. In that case, a new fitment is the better choice. Closures with the same neck type, listed in the specifications, and ready-made bottle and closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. If you put together your own combination, we recommend checking the seal and dispensing with the specific formulation.

Do not store a filled roll-on lying down or in a hot car. When heated, oil can expand and seep out around the roller ball.

At the end of its life, the glass goes into glass recycling, while the cap and roller ball fitment belong with plastics. Separate the components before disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Does green glass protect the contents of a roll-on from light?
Green glass lets through less light than clear glass, so the contents of the roll-on are better protected. This is an advantage for perfume oils, essential oil blends and vegetable oils, because light accelerates their oxidation and the change in their fragrance. Even so, we recommend storing the roll-on away from direct sunlight.
How much does a 30 ml roll-on bottle hold?
A roll-on is normally filled with 30 ml, which is the nominal volume of the bottle. More will fit up to the rim of the neck, but this reserve is taken up by the roller ball fitment and by the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. If you fill the bottle to the brim, the contents will spill out when you press in the fitment and the closure may not seal.
Can a roll-on bottle be filled with diluted essential oils?
Yes, essential oil blends diluted in a carrier oil are among the most common uses of a roll-on. The roller ball fitment is made of polypropylene, so for blends with a high proportion of undiluted essential oils or with alcohol, we recommend first checking how the plastic behaves in a single filled bottle.
Is a roll-on also suitable for water-based products such as toners?
Yes, provided the product is thin and the ball rotates freely in it. Water-based products in a roll-on need a preservative, because the ball repeatedly touches the skin and the contents are contaminated with each use. Thick gels are difficult to apply with a roller ball.
Can a roll-on bottle be washed and refilled?
Yes, the glass bottle can be washed, disinfected with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and refilled once dry. The roller ball fitment can be removed and rinsed, but traces of a strong fragrance cannot be completely removed from the plastic. When changing the contents, it is better to use a new roller ball fitment.
