Product description
Glass bottle, pharmaceutical, flat, PP28S, 250 ml is a brown glass bottle with a flat body and a nominal volume of 250 ml, designed for liquid products that require protection from light. Brown glass reduces light penetration, thereby slowing oxidation and quality loss of light-sensitive contents. It is particularly suitable for vegetable and macerated oils, oil serums in larger packaging, tinctures, hydrolats, tonics, liquid soaps, cleansing oils, and botanical extracts.
Glass is a chemically resistant material that does not react with its contents, does not release odours or components into them, and does not absorb fragrance or colour. The bottle is suitable for direct contact with both food and cosmetics. The flat body with straight walls stands stable, is comfortable to hold, and offers a smooth surface for labelling.
Key benefits
- Light protection – brown glass limits light exposure to the contents, which is important for oils with a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids, for tinctures, and for formulations containing essential oils.
- Inert material – glass does not react with oils, alcohol, acidic or alkaline solutions, making it suitable for a wide range of contents without the risk of substances leaching from the packaging.
- Flat shape – the bottle takes up little space on a shelf or in a drawer, stands stable, and the label adheres to the flat front surface without creases.
- Contact with food and cosmetics – the packaging is certified for direct contact with food and is also suitable for cosmetic products, so there is no need to distinguish between intended uses.
- Reusable – glass can be thoroughly washed, disinfected, and refilled without any change in appearance.
Nominal and total volume
For every container, two volumes are distinguished. The nominal volume is the volume for which the bottle is designed under standard filling conditions, and it is this value by which the packaging is labelled and sold. The total brim-full volume is the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference between the two is intentional: it provides headspace for a closure or dropper insert that extends into the neck, and for expansion of the contents with temperature change. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Precise values for both volumes are listed in the product specifications.
If you are filling oils or tinctures that expand when cooled or warmed, leave free headspace in the neck. An overfilled bottle will force contents around the thread when the closure is fitted, and the seal may not close properly.
Closures and ready-made combinations
The bottle has a threaded neck of type PP28S. Closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available from Handymade. When assembling your own combination, we recommend verifying leak-tightness and the compatibility of the closure with the specific formulation, especially with essential oils and alcohol-based extracts, which may stress the plastic parts of the closure.
Suitable applications
- Vegetable and macerated oils – light accelerates their yellowing; brown glass slows this process.
- Tinctures and alcohol-based extracts – glass withstands alcohol and botanical pigments will not absorb into it.
- Hydrolats and tonics – for aqueous products the container remains safe; thorough cleaning before filling and preservation of the contents are essential.
- Liquid soaps and cleansing oils – the 250 ml volume corresponds to a standard bathroom-size packaging.
- Home-made oils, syrups, and herbal extracts – thanks to food-contact certification, the bottle is equally at home in the kitchen.
What to know before filling for the first time
Before first use, wash the bottle with warm water, rinse, and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Leave it to dry completely upside down before filling, so that no water droplets remain inside that could introduce moisture into an oil-based content. The same procedure applies to reuse — remove the old label and any residual content with warm water.
Glass withstands high temperatures but is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Do not pour hot contents into a cold bottle and do not place a cold bottle in hot water, as cracking may occur. When filling with warm substances, preheat the bottle first or allow the contents to cool down.
Brown glass reduces light transmission but does not block it entirely. Even in a brown bottle, store light-sensitive products away from direct sunlight.
Once the bottle has reached the end of its life, it belongs in glass recycling. Before disposal, remove the closure, which is typically made from a different material.
