Product description
The square glass 10 ml roll-on bottle made of amber glass is intended for oil-based perfumes, aromatherapy blends and facial oils used in small amounts, which are applied directly to the skin without using your hands. Amber glass dampens light, which helps protect essential oils, vegetable oils and fragrance compositions from faster ageing. Thanks to its square shape, the medicine bottle stands steadily and is less likely to roll around in a pocket or a cosmetic bag.
The set consists of a bottle, a black plastic cap and a steel roller ball in a plastic seat. The seat with the ball is fitted into the neck, closes the bottle and rolls a small amount of the contents onto the skin as it glides over it. The cap is screwed on over the ball and protects it from contamination. All three parts are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and the set is intended for cosmetics.
What it is good for
- Oil-based perfumes – a fragrance composition or a blend of essential oils diluted in jojoba or fractionated coconut oil is applied to the wrist, neck or behind the ears.
- Aromatherapy roll-ons – blends for sleep, concentration or refreshment, applied to the temples and the back of the neck. Essential oils are always diluted in a carrier oil for a roll-on.
- Oil serums for the eye area – the ball spreads a small amount of oil exactly where it is needed.
- Oils for the lips and cuticles – precise dispensing onto a small area without dripping onto your finger.
- Samples and travel sizes – a small format for trying a new blend or for a trip.
The contents should be oil-based or alcohol-based and sufficiently fluid. Thick formulations, balms and emulsions do not roll well over the ball, and very thin water-based solutions may leak around the edges. For every new recipe, we recommend first filling one bottle and testing the dispensing and checking that it does not leak when carried.
Filling and volume
The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for under normal filling. The total brimful volume, stated in the parameters, is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them forms a reserve for the ball seat and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is overfilled, the ball is difficult to fit and part of the contents spills out.
Fill using a dropper or a small funnel and fit the ball only after the whole amount has been poured in. The seat is pressed into the neck with even pressure until it clicks into place, then the bottle is turned over and checked for leaks.
The narrow neck makes filling from a larger container difficult, so the finished blend is mixed beforehand in a beaker and only poured into the bottle. Blends with essential oils are left to combine thoroughly with the carrier oil before filling.
Good to know
Before the first filling, the bottle is washed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry completely. The plastic ball seat and the cap are disinfected in the same way, without hot water and without long soaking in alcohol. Any moisture that remains in the bottle does not mix with the oil-based contents and stays in the filling.
Glass withstands cleaning and repeated use, but avoid sudden changes in temperature. Hot contents are not poured into the bottle; let them cool down first. For reuse, the seat with the ball is pried out of the neck with a blunt tool and the bottle is cleaned of residues of the previous oil, which would otherwise affect the fragrance of the new filling.
The cap and the ball seat are made of polypropylene. For blends with a high proportion of undiluted essential oils or with solvents, we recommend checking the behaviour of the plastic with the specific formulation before you fill a larger batch.
When carried, a roll-on is often exposed to warmth and comes into contact with the skin. Therefore, reserve preservative-free formulations for anhydrous oil blends only. Water-based or hydrosol fillings need a preservative and seep past the ball more easily.
Closures with the same neck type, stated in the parameters, and ready-made bottle + closure combinations can be found in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the tightness and dispensing with the specific formulation.
After use, the bottle is sorted into glass, and the cap and the plastic seat into plastics.
