Product description

The glass roll-on with an amber bottle is designed for oil-based perfumes, essential oil blends in a carrier oil and other liquid preparations applied to specific points on the skin: the wrists, temples, behind the ears or the neck. Amber glass filters light, so it suits contents with essential oils and other ingredients that lose their scent or effect in light. The set includes the bottle, a metal roller ball and a silver cap, so once filled it is ready to use.

The roller ball applies the contents in a thin layer and the dose is easy to control, which you will appreciate with more concentrated fragrance blends. The 10 ml volume suits a perfume for your handbag, a small trial batch or little handmade gifts.

What the set includes

  • Amber glass bottle, 10 ml – the glass body of the roll-on, which does not react with oils or alcohol and protects the contents from light.
  • Metal roller ball – made of steel, it rolls smoothly over the skin.
  • Silver cap – a plastic cap with an aluminium finish, which screws onto the neck and covers the roller ball.

What it is suitable for

  • Oil-based perfumes – fragrance compositions or essential oils diluted in jojoba oil, almond oil or another liquid oil.
  • Aromatherapy roll-ons – blends for the temples or wrists, for example for the evening or for travel.
  • Oil serums for targeted application – the eye area, cuticles, dry spots on the lips or elbows.
  • Alcohol-based perfumes – glass withstands alcohol, but test the seal of the roller ball and cap with your specific blend beforehand.

Water-based preparations can also be filled into the roll-on, for example toners or blends with hydrosols. Before making a larger batch, check how the roller ball behaves with them and whether the contents leak while being carried.

Filling and volume

The roll-on has a nominal volume of 10 ml, that is, the volume it is designed to hold when filled normally. The brimful volume given in the parameters is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference is a reserve for the roller ball and for the free space above the liquid, without which the contents would overflow when the roller ball is pressed in. It should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

After filling, press the roller ball into the neck until it sits firmly, and then screw on the cap. Before first use, simply turn the roll-on upside down several times so that the roller ball is moistened by the contents.

The neck is narrow, so fill it with a small funnel or a dropper. If the contents are thicker, for example an oil with a proportion of firmer ingredients, first check on a single piece whether it passes through the roller ball at all.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle and the roller ball, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. Residual water would not disperse in oil-based contents and would stay at the bottom.

The roller ball spreads liquid and slightly viscous contents well. Thick gels, balms or oils that solidify in the cold will not get through it or will block it.

Do not pour hot contents into the glass; let them cool to room temperature first. A sudden change in temperature can damage the glass, and warm contents also change volume as they cool.

The roll-on can be used repeatedly. The roller ball can be removed from the neck, the bottle cleaned in the same way as before the first filling and the roll-on reassembled. Each time you reassemble it, check that the roller ball holds firmly.

All three components of the set are declared suitable for contact with cosmetics. The declarations of conformity are listed with the product. The set is intended for cosmetic preparations.

You will find replacement roller balls and caps with the same neck type in the Handymade range. If you combine parts yourself, check the seal and dispensing with your specific formulation.

A roll-on is often carried in a handbag or a pocket. After filling, leave it lying on absorbent paper for a few hours and check that the contents do not leak around the roller ball or the cap.

For sorting, the bottle goes with glass, the cap combines plastic and aluminium and the steel roller ball is sorted as metal.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber glass of the roll-on protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass lets through significantly less light than clear glass and slows changes in the scent and effect of essential oils and other sensitive ingredients. However, it does not provide complete protection, so store the roll-on out of direct sunlight. For fragrance blends in an oil base that are used up within a few months, amber glass is usually sufficient.
How much fits into a 10 ml glass roll-on?
The roll-on is filled with 10 ml, which is its nominal volume. The bottle has a slightly larger physical brimful volume, but this difference is a reserve for the roller ball and the air space above the liquid. If it were filled to the neck, the contents would overflow when the roller ball is pressed in and the cap would seal less well.
Can a 10 ml glass roll-on be refilled repeatedly?
Yes, the roll-on can be taken apart, cleaned and refilled. Remove the roller ball from the neck, wash the bottle, disinfect it with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and let it dry. After reassembling, check that the roller ball sits firmly, because repeated removal can weaken the seal.
Is the glass roll-on suitable for an alcohol-based perfume or a water-based toner?
Glass is suitable for both alcohol-based and water-based contents; what matters is how the roller ball behaves and how well the cap seals. Thin contents flow through the roller ball faster than oil and are more likely to leak while being carried. So fill one piece first, leave it lying for several hours and only then fill the whole batch.
How do you insert the metal roller ball into the glass roll-on?
After the bottle is filled, press the roller ball into the neck with even pressure until it sits firmly, and then screw on the cap. Press on a flat surface so that the roller ball does not jam. If it does not turn freely after assembly, the contents are probably too thick or the roller ball has not seated fully.
