Product description
A glass roll-on bottle with a volume of 10 ml is used to apply liquid products to the skin with a roller ball, without touching them with your fingers and without more product than necessary flowing out of the bottle. The set includes a clear glass bottle, a plastic roller ball and a black plastic cap, so once filled it does not need to be combined with anything else. The clear glass shows the colour and the amount of the contents, which you will appreciate both when selling and at home, when you want to see how much of the product is left.
It is most often filled with perfume oils, essential oil blends diluted in a carrier oil, oil serums for the eye area or the cuticles, and small amounts of facial oils intended for spot application. The packaging is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and all three components of the set have their own EU declaration of conformity.
What it is suitable for
- Perfume and aromatherapy oils – the roller ball applies a thin layer to the wrist, neck or temples, and the 10 ml volume corresponds to a common travel or handbag size.
- Oil serums for small areas – the eye area, lips or cuticles, where you work with a few drops and precise application matters.
- Samples and testers – through the clear glass the customer can see the contents, and the small volume keeps the cost of a sample low.
- Liquid products with low to medium viscosity – the roller ball turns smoothly in oils and thin liquids. Thick gels or creams do not apply well with a roll-on and the roller ball may get stuck.
Filling and assembly
The bottle is filled before the roller ball is fitted, most easily with a small funnel or a dropper, so that the neck does not get dirty and the cap then seals well. After filling, the roller ball is pressed into the neck until it fits firmly, and only then is the cap screwed on. With a larger number of pieces, it works well to line up the bottles in a row, fill them all at once and press in the roller balls one after another with the same pressure, for example with the flat side of a spoon or a small board.
The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is designed for in normal filling. The brimful volume, stated in the parameters, is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between them provides a reserve for the roller ball, which takes up part of the space in the neck once pressed in, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. For this reason, fill up to the nominal volume, not to the brim.
If you fill the bottle up to the neck, part of the contents is pushed out when the roller ball is pressed in and runs down the outside. The oil layer on the thread then worsens the seal of the cap and makes it slip when opening.
Good to know
Before the first filling, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely, so that no residual water gets into the oil-based product. Treat the roller ball and the cap in the same way. The glass withstands washing in hot water, but disinfect the plastic parts with alcohol instead and do not expose them to high temperatures.
Clear glass does not protect the contents from light. Store blends with essential oils, perfume oils and oils prone to oxidation away from direct sunlight, or in a box. For products that are significantly damaged by light, a roll-on bottle made of amber glass is more suitable.
Pure essential oils and solvents can affect plastic parts. Before a larger batch, fill one piece and after a few weeks check that the roller ball still runs freely, that the cap seals and that the contents have not changed.
The roll-on is intended for repeated use. Once it is empty, carefully pry out the roller ball, wash all parts, disinfect them and let them dry. After refitting, check that the roller ball sits firmly and that nothing leaks when the bottle is turned upside down. You can find replacement caps and roller balls for this neck type in the Handymade range. Glass belongs in the glass recycling bin; separate the polypropylene cap and roller ball before throwing them away and put them with the plastics.
