Product description
Glass jar, black glossy, 30 ml is an opaque glass jar designed for creams, balms and butters that are scooped out with a finger or spatula. Black glass does not transmit light, so it protects the contents from light and is also suitable for formulations with more sensitive ingredients, such as plant oils, essential oils or antioxidants. The 30 ml volume corresponds to a typical facial or eye cream size, as well as a smaller trial batch when developing your own formula.
The packaging is suitable for use with cosmetic products and meets the applicable regulatory requirements. It has no documented food-contact approval, so we recommend using it for cosmetics only.
What the jar is suitable for
- Face and eye creams – the wide neck allows comfortable scooping even from a thicker emulsion.
- Balms and anhydrous products – butters, lip balms, solid serums and salves pour easily into glass when warm and hold their shape once solidified.
- Samples and trial batches – the small volume is ideal for stability testing and trialling a new formula before scaling up.
- Scrubs and masks – thicker textures with a grainy fraction are easier to dispense from a jar than from a bottle.
Nominal and total volume
When filling, it is useful to distinguish between two figures. The nominal volume is the volume the jar is designed for during normal filling and the one stated on the label. The total brim-full volume is the physical capacity up to the neck. The difference between them is the allowance for the lid, any sealing insert, and the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The jar should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Exact values for both volumes are given in the product specifications.
Closure and combinations
Lids with the same neck type, as well as ready-made jar and closure combinations, are available in the Handymade range. For custom combinations, we recommend checking seal integrity with your specific formula, especially for products with a higher proportion of essential oils or products intended for shipping.
What is good to know
Preparation before first filling. Before use, wash the jar, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and let it dry completely. Residual water in the container is a common cause of microbial contamination in anhydrous balms, which otherwise do not require a preservative.
Pour balms and butters into the jar while still liquid, but not boiling, and let the jar warm up to room temperature before filling. Cold glass filled with hot mass may crack. Hot mass also contracts as it cools, creating a depression in the centre; pouring slightly pre-cooled mass in a single step prevents this.
Chemical resistance. Glass does not react with essential oils, solvents or acidic ingredients, which is an advantage over common plastics. The jar is therefore also suitable for formulations that would over time cloud or soften a plastic container.
Reuse. Glass can be reused after thorough washing and disinfection without any loss of properties. Residual strong fragrance is retained more by the lid or sealing insert than by the glass itself, so replace these when switching between formulas.
Labelling. The glossy black surface holds self-adhesive labels and direct print well. For a small diameter, a label on the lid combined with a narrow band around the jar circumference works well.
Recycling. Once emptied and rinsed, the jar belongs in glass recycling; the lid is sorted separately according to its material.
Glass is heavier and more fragile than plastic. When shipping finished products, allow for sturdier cushioning material and increased parcel weight.
