Product description

The black glass jar with black lid, 50 ml, is a complete packaging for creams, butters and balms, sold as a ready-made set: a glass jar, plastic lid and inner liner. The black opaque glass protects the contents from light, making it particularly suitable for formulations with sensitive vegetable oils, butters or active ingredients that are susceptible to light damage. Thanks to the wide neck, thick textures can be easily scooped out with a finger or spatula.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. It is not approved for contact with food, so we recommend using it exclusively for cosmetics.

Why choose this set

  • Light protection – black glass does not let light through, which slows down the oxidation of oils and the fading of coloured or fragrant components.
  • Glass without interaction with contents – glass does not react with essential oils or common cosmetic solvents; the contents retain their original scent and do not absorb odour from the packaging.
  • Inner liner – a plastic disc is inserted between the contents and the lid, covering the surface of the cream and helping to keep the contents clean during opening and transport.
  • Lid with sealing insert – the threaded plastic lid has a foam sealing layer inside that seals the neck when tightened and reduces drying out of the contents.
  • Ready-made set – the jar, lid and liner fit together; no need to combine them separately.

Nominal and total volume

The jar is filled to the nominal volume, i.e. the quantity for which the packaging is intended for standard filling. The total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference provides a reserve for the inner liner and lid, as well as space for the contents to expand with temperature changes. Filling to the brim would cause the contents to be pushed under the liner and into the thread when closing. Specific values for both volumes can be found in the parameters.

Suitable for products such as

  • Face and body creams – thick O/W and W/O emulsions that are scooped out with a finger or spatula.
  • Body butters and balms – anhydrous products based on butters and wax.
  • Masks and scrubs – thick masks, sugar or salt scrubs in smaller packaging.
  • Solid perfumes and salves – the small volume suits concentrated anhydrous products.
  • Samples and travel sizes – the 50 ml volume is sufficient for testing a formulation or as a gift version of a product.

Liquid products such as serums, tonics or oils do not belong in the jar. They would spill when tilted and cannot be dispensed from it; bottles with a dropper or pump are more suitable for liquids.

What is good to know when working with the jar

Before the first filling, we recommend washing the jar, lid and liner, disinfecting them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allowing them to dry completely. Residual water in the packaging shortens the shelf life of the contents, especially for anhydrous products.

Glass is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Do not pour hot balm or melted butter directly from cold into the jar. Let the jar warm up to room temperature or allow the contents to cool slightly before filling.

When filling hot (balms, solid perfumes, butters), allow the contents to set and cool completely in the jar before inserting the inner liner and tightening the lid. If the liner is placed on still-warm contents, it will stick to the surface and pull the contents away when opened.

The inner liner is most useful for creams and butters that you send to customers. For personal-use products, it can be left out after the first opening.

The plastic lid made of polypropylene withstands common cosmetic ingredients. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils or alcohol, we recommend testing the behaviour of the sealing insert in the lid on a trial piece. After washing and disinfecting, the jar can be refilled. Ready-made combinations of jars with closures and individual lids with the same thread type can be found in the Handymade range.

Labels are applied to the cylindrical surface of the jar or to the lid; the dimensions of a suitable label follow from the diameter and height in the parameters. On glossy black glass, labels with a transparent background or light printing stand out best.

After use, the set is disassembled: glass goes with glass, the plastic lid and liner go with plastics.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black glass jar protect the contents from light?
Yes, black glass is opaque and does not let light through to the contents. For creams and butters containing vegetable oils, vitamins or essential oils, this is a practical advantage, as light accelerates oxidation and loss of scent. An opaque container also means the contents and their quantity are not visible from the outside.
Is the glass jar with a black lid suitable for food?
No, this set is not approved for contact with food. The jar, lid and inner liner are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products, so we recommend using them only for creams, balms, butters, masks and similar cosmetic products.
What is the inner liner in the glass jar for?
The inner liner is a plastic disc that is inserted on top of the contents under the lid. It covers the cream or butter, protects it from contamination from the lid and reduces contact with air. It should only be inserted once the contents have completely cooled and set; otherwise it will stick.
How much cream fits in the 50 ml glass jar?
The jar is filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml, which is the quantity the packaging is intended for. The total volume to the brim is larger, but this difference is the reserve for the liner and lid. The weight of the filled contents depends on the density of the formulation; light whipped butters weigh less than dense creams.
Can hot balm be poured into the glass jar?
Yes, but carefully. Glass cannot withstand sudden temperature changes, so the jar must not be cold and the melted balm should be allowed to cool slightly before filling. The contents are left to set in the jar without the lid, and only then is the liner inserted and the closure tightened, to prevent moisture condensing under it.
How is the glass jar prepared for reuse?
Wash the jar, lid and liner with warm soapy water, rinse, disinfect with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol and allow to dry completely. The sealing insert in the lid may absorb the scent of essential oils after prolonged contact; when changing the product, we recommend replacing the lid.
