Ironing spray: less ironing after every wash

A basket of clean laundry, evening, and an hour at the ironing board ahead of you. Ironing is one of the household chores that few people enjoy. So it piles up, gets postponed, and in the end it has to be done anyway.

We approached the question differently. What if clothes came out of the washing machine less wrinkled, and what did get wrinkled could be ironed faster? With exactly this goal in mind, we developed an ironing spray. In this article, we will show you how it works and what exactly is in the bottle.


Why clothes wrinkle

During washing, the fibres soak up water, twist, and dry in this position. Spinning helps them along even more. You know the result: a shirt that looks as if you slept in it.

Each washing and drying cycle also puts mechanical stress on the fibres. Over time, textiles abrade, colours fade and the surface of the fabric appears worn. Creasing is only the most visible part of this process.


What the ironing spray is

A fine mist that you spray onto clothing before ironing or immediately after hanging it up. It is neither starch nor fabric softener. The base consists of demineralised water and a protein component that binds to the fibres, smooths their surface and reduces friction. The fabric yields more easily and the iron glides more smoothly.


Wheat protein that does the main work

The active ingredient in all three versions is a copolymer of hydrolyzed wheat protein and silicone, developed specifically for textile care. The protein creates a flexible protective network on the fibre. This smooths out the fibres, holds them together and reduces friction between the iron and the fabric.

This is not a marketing promise, but a measurable effect. In a panel test by the raw material manufacturer, participants ironed a shirt treated with this ingredient for 19% less time: 95 seconds instead of 114. In further tests, cotton and cotton–polyester blends had visibly fewer creases after washing and drying, and less force was needed to iron the cotton smooth. The tests were carried out in laundry detergents and fabric softeners; we put this ingredient into a spray that you apply exactly where you need it. And in the same concentration that the manufacturer used in the tests.


An ingredient that also extends the life of textiles

We did not choose the protein component only for faster ironing. The same protective network that smooths the fibres also protects them. The raw material manufacturer provides washing data for it: denim retained its colour 24% better after eight washes, wool and cashmere showed fewer damaged fibres under the microscope, and a third fewer microfibres were released from synthetic textiles.

Why do we mention this in relation to an ironing spray? Because it says a lot about the character of the ingredient. It does not smooth the fabric by coating it with wax or starch. It cares for the fibre itself.


A composition without unnecessary ingredients

We believe that you have the right to know what you are spraying onto your clothes. The entire composition fits into a single sentence: demineralised water, protein copolymer, plant-based ethanol, which ensures that the mist dries quickly, a citrate system for stable pH, and a preservative without which a water-based product would spoil. The fragranced versions additionally contain a fragrance oil and a solubilizer that disperses it in water.

The result: 98% ingredients of natural origin, and the Pure version even 99%. No optical brighteners, no starch, no extra ingredients. For the fragranced versions, we carefully set the fragrance concentration with regard to its intensity, the overall composition and the content of fragrance allergens in the finished product. We address details like these already during development.

What you will not find in our bottle

The percentage of natural origin is a nice figure, but on its own it does not say much. You get a better picture when you look at the ingredients on which conventional ironing products are based. Here are five that you will look for in vain in our product.

Free silicones and acrylate polymers. The best known anti-crease sprays smooth the fabric with a combination of silicone derivatives and acrylate copolymers. These are synthetic polymers that remain on the fibres as an artificial film. Our active ingredient is based on wheat protein, is water-soluble and biodegradable.

Quaternary ammonium compounds. Drugstore anti-crease sprays often borrow softening chemistry from fabric softeners: so-called quats, or their silicone versions. These are cationic compounds that bind to fibres and remain in the textile, and they also pull other auxiliaries into the formulation, such as synthetic emulsifiers or propylene glycol. Our formulation does not need any of this; the protein is responsible for the smoothing effect.

Starch. Classic starch stiffens the fabric by coating the fibres in a rigid layer. The fabric becomes unyielding, the layer crumbles over time, and at higher temperatures the starch burns onto the soleplate. We do not coat the fibres; we smooth them.

Propane–butane. Canned starches are pressurised aerosols, and part of their content is a flammable propellant gas that you spray next to a hot iron. Our bottle has a simple mechanical sprayer. Inside there is only the product, no gas.

Fragrance as the only information. About the scent of a conventional spray you will learn one single word from the label: parfum. For preservation, isothiazolinones are also often used, known contact allergens, often even the pair methylisothiazolinone and benzisothiazolinone at the same time. Our ironing spray also contains a preservative; a water-based product cannot do without it. The difference is that we openly state the entire composition, we monitor the content of fragrance allergens already during development, and the Pure version is completely fragrance-free.

You can therefore make the comparison yourself: turn the bottle around and read the composition. We list it in full and explain for each ingredient why it is there. If you are looking for a more natural alternative to conventional ironing products, this is the most reliable way to verify it.


How to use it

Hang the clothes on a hanger or spread them out on a board. Spray a fine mist evenly over the fabric and gently stretch, smooth or iron the fabric. Lightly wrinkled pieces often do not even need an iron: spray them, smooth them with your palm and let them dry.

It is suitable for cotton, blended fabrics and everyday underwear. On delicate materials we recommend first testing it on a small area, as with any textile care product.

Frequently asked questions

How does the ironing spray work?
The ironing spray applies a protein component to the textile, which smooths the surface of the fibres and reduces friction between the iron and the fabric. Does the spray completely replace ironing?
For heavily wrinkled clothes, no: it shortens and facilitates ironing. However, a lightly wrinkled T‑shirt or blouse often does not need an iron at all: just spray, smooth by hand and let dry.
Does the spray contain silicones?
The active ingredient is a copolymer in which the silicone part is firmly bound to hydrolyzed wheat protein. It is not a free silicone oil. The ingredient is water-soluble, and the manufacturer provides data on its biodegradability and aquatic toxicity.
Which version is fragrance-free?

Why is there alcohol in the composition?
A small amount of plant-based ethanol speeds up the drying of the mist on the fabric. The sprayed clothes are therefore not wet, only slightly damp, and are quickly ready for ironing or wearing.
