Product description

This black plastic lip balm container is designed for solid anhydrous products that are poured in melted and applied directly from the container once set. The slim stick shape fits in a pocket and a cosmetic bag, and the nominal volume of 5 ml corresponds to a standard lip balm size.

The container is made of polypropylene (PP), a lightweight and shatterproof plastic that holds up well against oils, butters and waxes. The black colour is opaque, so it protects the contents from light — particularly useful for formulations with plant oils prone to oxidation. The container is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; a declaration of conformity is available on the product page.

Suitable products

  • Lip balms – classic blends of waxes, butters and oils, including tinted variants with pigments.
  • Solid perfumes – a wax base with a fragrance or essential oil, where the opaque container limits light exposure and helps preserve the scent.
  • Spot-treatment balms – sticks for cuticles or dry patches on hands and elbows, where precise application without scooping with a finger is an advantage.

The container is intended for masses that hold their shape once cooled. Soft ointments, creams and emulsions are not suitable, as they cannot be dispensed comfortably from a narrow container. For those, a jar is the better choice.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume the container is designed for under standard filling. Total volume to the brim is the physical capacity of the container and is slightly larger. The difference serves as a margin for the cap and for volume changes as the mass cools. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

Volume in millilitres does not equal fill weight in grams. Blends of waxes and oils have a lower density than water, so the weight of the balm in the container will be somewhat lower than the volume would suggest. The most reliable way to determine the exact value for your own formulation is to weigh several filled units.

Filling and container preparation

Before first use, sanitise the container with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely. Do not sterilise the plastic by boiling or in an oven.

No water must get into an anhydrous balm. Even a few drops remaining in the container after washing can cause microbial contamination in the finished product, so only fill when the container is completely dry.

Pour the mass when it is melted and homogeneous, ideally at a temperature just slightly above its setting point. A lower pouring temperature is gentler on sensitive oils and fragrance ingredients and reduces shrinkage of the fill. Containers should be standing on a flat surface during filling and left undisturbed until fully set.

Balm mass shrinks as it cools and a small depression often forms in the centre of the surface. Filling in two steps helps: fill the container just below the target level, allow the surface to set, then top up with a small amount of warm mass.

Good to know

  • Temperature – polypropylene tolerates the typical pouring temperatures used for balms; do not pour overheated mass into the container.
  • Essential and fragrance oils – at concentrations normal for balms, they are generally compatible with polypropylene. At higher levels or with a new fragrance composition, we recommend a test fill and observation over several weeks.
  • Labelling – apply the label to a dry and degreased surface, ideally once the fill has cooled completely. The dimensions needed for label design are listed in the product parameters.
  • Reuse – for personal use, the container can be cleaned thoroughly, sanitised and refilled. Products intended for sale should always use new containers.
  • Recycling – polypropylene is a recyclable plastic; empty containers belong in plastic recycling.

Frequently asked questions

Does the black lip balm container protect the contents from light?
Yes, black polypropylene is opaque and does not allow light to reach the fill. This is helpful for balms containing plant oils and butters that oxidise faster and change in scent when exposed to light. Light protection does not, however, replace an antioxidant in the formulation. For oils prone to yellowing, it still makes sense to include, for example, Tocopherol.
How many grams of balm fit in a 5 ml lip balm container?
A container with a nominal volume of 5 ml holds slightly less than 5 g of balm. Blends of waxes, butters and oils have a lower density than water, so millilitres do not equal grams. The exact weight depends on the formulation. For products intended for sale, it must be verified by weighing filled units.
At what temperature should a plastic lip balm container be filled?
Fill the container with the mass melted just slightly above its setting point. Polypropylene tolerates the typical pouring temperatures for balms without deforming. Mass that is too hot shrinks more on cooling and creates a depression on the surface. It also puts unnecessary stress on sensitive oils and fragrance ingredients.
How should a lip balm container be prepared before first filling?
It is sufficient to sanitise the container with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely. Do not boil it or dry it in an oven, as the plastic may deform. It is essential that no moisture remains inside. Lip balm is an anhydrous product typically formulated without a preservative, and any residual water could lead to microbial contamination.
Is the plastic lip balm container suitable for formulations with essential oils?
Yes, at concentrations typical for lip balms, a polypropylene container is suitable for formulations with essential oils. Polypropylene is among the plastics with good resistance to oils and fats. At higher essential oil levels — for example in solid perfumes — we recommend a test fill. After several weeks, check whether the surface of the container or the scent of the fill has changed.
Can a lip balm container be reused?
For personal use, yes — once the fill is used up, the container can be cleaned and refilled. Remove balm residue with a paper towel, wash the container with warm soapy water, sanitise with alcohol and allow it to dry thoroughly. For products intended for sale, reuse is not recommended; always use new, unused containers.
