Product description

Blue push-up packaging made of polypropylene for a stick lip balm with a nominal volume of 5 ml. The product is dispensed by rotating the bottom part of the packaging; the cap slides onto the stick body. Suitable for anything poured while warm that solidifies at room temperature: lip balms, solid perfumes, or stick salves for dry areas of skin.

Polypropylene is lightweight and shatterproof, so the stick can be carried in a handbag or pocket without problems. The blue colour helps distinguish individual scents or balm variants when making multiple types at once. The packaging is suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

What it’s good for

  • Lip balms – a wax or butter formula with oils, optionally with a colour pigment.
  • Solid perfumes – wax with a fragrance composition, applied to the wrist or neck.
  • Stick salves and solid oils – for elbows, heels, cuticles, or small areas of skin where a stick is more convenient than a jar.
  • Samples and gifts – the small volume is sufficient for a trial version of a formula or for a set with multiple scents.

Filling and working with the packaging

Before filling, rotate the bottom part so that the inner piston is completely down. Pour the melted mass into the stick in one step, without interruption. If you interrupt the pouring, layers and air pockets will form in the product. Allow the mass to solidify at room temperature on a flat surface.

Pour the mass slightly above the upper edge of the stick body. Waxes reduce in volume as they cool and the level drops; the surplus will fill the hollow that would otherwise form in the centre of the product.

Put the cap on only after the product has cooled completely. Warm mass under a closed cap forms condensation that remains on the surface of the product. For first use, simply rotate the bottom part by a few degrees and the product will push up. After use, push it back down so the cap seats properly on the stick body.

The packaging consists of a body with a rotating base and piston, and a push-on cap. No additional closure is required.

What’s good to know

Nominal volume is the volume the stick is intended to hold under normal filling. The total volume to the rim is slightly larger; the difference provides a margin for the cap and for volume changes as the mass cools and when carried in warm conditions. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the rim.

Before the first fill, wash the packaging, sanitise it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow it to dry completely. Residual water will be trapped under the product when the mass is poured and will shorten its shelf life.

In formulas with a high proportion of liquid oils and a small amount of wax, the product may crack when rotated or stick to the wall. The stick mass needs enough wax to hold its shape and push out without breaking.

The packaging can be reused. Remove any remaining product, wash the stick body with warm water and detergent, degrease it, and sanitise it again before the next fill.

Frequently asked questions

How is a push-up lip balm packaging filled?
Rotate the bottom part of the packaging so the piston moves fully down, then pour the melted mass in one step slightly above the rim and allow it to solidify. Put the cap on only after it has cooled. During use, the product is dispensed by rotating the bottom; after use, push it back down so the cap seats on the stick body.
How much mass fits in a 5 ml lip balm packaging?
Approximately 5 ml of finished mass, i.e. up to the nominal volume, not to the rim. The weight of the product in grams depends on the ratio of wax, butters, and oils in the formula, so we recommend verifying it by weighing at the first fill. The value from the first fill can then be used to calculate the batch quantity for a whole series of sticks.
Can hot mass be poured into a plastic lip balm packaging?
Yes, melted wax mass is poured directly into the polypropylene stick immediately after melting. Pour the mass as soon as all ingredients have dissolved and the mixture is clear, without heating further beyond the required temperature. The stick must be dry before pouring, with the piston in the down position.
Is the lip balm packaging suitable for solid perfume?
Yes, wax and oil based solid perfumes are filled into the push-up stick in the same way as a lip balm. With a higher proportion of fragrance composition, check that the mass holds its shape after solidifying and can be pushed out without breaking. Verify the suitability of the fragrance component for contact with plastic in the finished formula.
Can the lip balm stick be refilled?
Yes, the packaging can be refilled. Push out any remaining old product, wash the body with warm water and detergent, degrease it, and sanitise it with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol before refilling. Return the piston to the bottom position by rotating, and fill the stick in the same way as for the first use.
