Product description

A push-up tube for lip balm sticks with a nominal volume of 5 ml. The melted mass is poured directly into the tube; once set, the filling is advanced by turning the ridged wheel at the base, and the snap-on cap protects it between uses. Suitable for balms for personal use as well as small production runs for sale where identical packaging is needed in larger quantities.

The tube is made of polypropylene (PP). It is lightweight, won't break in a bag or pocket, and the white wall shields the contents from light. The packaging is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration of conformity is available with the product.

What it is used for

  • Lip balm sticks – a blend of waxes, butters and oils set in the tube into a stick shape and applied without touching with fingers.
  • Solid perfumes – a wax base with a fragrance composition applied directly to the wrist or behind the ears.
  • Balms for dry areas of skin – cuticles, elbows or cracked fingertips; the tube stays with you at all times.
  • Samples and gift sets – the small volume is ideal for trial packaging or a set of multiple fragrances.

How to fill the tube

Before the first filling, the tube is washed, disinfected with alcohol (ethanol or isopropyl alcohol) and left to dry completely. An anhydrous balm tolerates no trace of water, so the tube must be completely dry before filling.

The wheel at the base is turned so that the piston is all the way down. The melted mass is then poured into the tube, which is left to stand upright until the filling sets. The mass is poured in a single pour. If more is added after partial setting, a visible seam remains on the stick.

For a larger number of tubes, a stand or tray with holes is worthwhile. The tubes stand upright, the mass sets with a level surface, and nothing tips over when pouring the next one.

Nominal volume is the volume the tube is designed for under normal filling. Total volume to the brim is the physical capacity up to the neck and is larger. The difference provides clearance for the cap and for advancing the stick, so the tube is filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim.

Good to know

  • Formula hardness – a stick requires a higher wax content than a balm in a pot. A mixture that is too soft will bend or break when pushed up and smear during application.
  • Essential oils and fragrance compounds – these are usually present in balms at a low percentage. For formulations with higher dosages, we recommend checking the packaging's behaviour with the specific formula.
  • Reuse – once emptied, the tube can be cleaned and refilled; the push-up mechanism is returned to the bottom position before filling.
  • Recycling – the tube is made from a single material, polypropylene, which makes sorting easier once it is empty.

Fit the cap only onto a fully set and cooled balm. Fitting it onto warm mass will deform the tip of the stick and the cap may stick.

Frequently asked questions

How is the lip balm container filled?
The piston is turned all the way down with the wheel and the melted mass is poured into the tube in a single pour. The tube stands upright until the filling sets; the cap is fitted only after cooling. Before the first fill, the container is washed, disinfected with alcohol and left to dry completely so that no water gets into the anhydrous balm.
How much balm fits in a 5 ml tube?
The tube is designed for approximately 5 ml of mass, which is the nominal volume under normal filling. Physically it holds somewhat more, but that extra space is needed for the cap and the push-up mechanism. Filling right to the brim would make it impossible to close or advance the stick cleanly.
Can the lip balm container be reused?
Yes, once empty the tube is cleaned and refilled. Wax residue is released with warm water and washing-up liquid, then the tube is disinfected with alcohol and left to dry completely. The push-up mechanism is returned to the bottom position before filling so the piston is all the way down.
Does the white tube protect the balm from light?
Yes, the white polypropylene wall covers the contents and limits light exposure. For balms containing vegetable and essential oils this is an advantage over transparent containers. The opaque wall also means you cannot see the remaining amount of filling from the outside.
Is the lip balm container also suitable for solid perfume?
Yes, solid perfumes are filled in the same way as balm. The wax base with the fragrance composition is poured in molten and pushed up with the wheel once set. At a higher proportion of fragrance composition we recommend checking the packaging's behaviour with the specific formulation.
Why does the balm stick in the tube break or bend?
The most common cause is a formula that is too soft, with too low a wax content. The stick must hold its shape without the support of the wall, so it needs a firmer blend than a balm in a pot. It also helps to push up only as much as is actually applied and to slide the filling back in after use.
