Product description

Plastic container for solid lip balm in yellow-orange colour. The balm is poured in while molten and, once set, is applied directly from the container without finger contact. The container is made of polypropylene (PP), which is lightweight, break-resistant and handles the oily and waxy blends typically used in balm formulations. The colour also helps distinguish individual variants of a recipe, such as citrus, mango or sea buckthorn.

The container is suitable for contact with cosmetic products. It is well suited for lip balms and sticks, solid perfumes, stick balms for hands and cuticles, as well as technical waxes, for example for conditioning leather goods or wood.

Why choose this container

  • Lightweight and durable – the container withstands everyday carry in a bag or pocket, where glass would be impractical.
  • Hygienic application – the balm is applied directly from the container without finger contact, which is especially appreciated in anhydrous formulations without a preservative.
  • Colour coding – when working with multiple variants, simply assign each recipe its own container colour and complete it with a label showing only the name.
  • Cosmetic and technical grade – the same container works equally well for a lip balm and a wax for leather or wood.

How to fill and use the container

The balm is prepared by melting waxes, butters and oils and poured into the container in liquid form. After heating, let the mixture cool briefly so it is still pourable but no longer straight off the heat. This reduces thermal stress on the plastic and allows the balm to set more evenly, without a sunken dip in the centre.

Fill just below the upper rim, not to the very edge. A small reserve is needed for fitting the cap and to allow for slight expansion of the contents in warm conditions. The fill weight depends on the formulation and fill level, so verify it by doing a test fill with one container and weighing it.

For larger batches, pour the balm in two steps. First fill the containers to roughly three-quarters, then top them up after partial setting. The surface will remain flat and without a sunken centre.

Before first use, wash the container and optionally sanitise it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, then allow to dry completely. Residual moisture would become trapped beneath the anhydrous balm and could affect its stability.

Good to know

  • Labelling – the smooth body of the container can be labelled with a wrap-around label or a colour dot on the cap. Label dimensions are listed in the product parameters.
  • Essential oils – at concentrations typical for lip balms, polypropylene is resistant to essential oils. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend testing the container's behaviour with a sample batch.
  • Heat – a balm in a plastic container will soften in sunlight or in a car just as it would in any other container. The plastic itself tolerates normal summer temperatures without issue.
  • Recycling – polypropylene is a commonly recycled plastic; empty containers should be sorted with plastics.

Frequently asked questions

What material is the lip balm container made of?
The container is made of polypropylene (PP), a plastic suitable for contact with cosmetic products. Polypropylene is lightweight, break-resistant and handles the oily and waxy blends that lip balms are composed of. This makes it suitable for home crafting as well as for small production runs intended for sale.
At what temperature can the balm be poured into the plastic container?
Pour the balm when it is still liquid but no longer straight from melting the waxes. Polypropylene handles the temperatures typical for pouring balms; however, an overly hot mixture sets unevenly and creates a sunken centre. A brief cool-down before pouring benefits both the container and the appearance of the finished product.
How full should the lip balm container be?
Fill just below the upper rim, never to the very edge. The reserve is needed for the cap and for expansion of the balm in warm conditions. If you need to know the exact fill weight for your formulation, fill one container as a test and weigh it before and after filling.
Can the lip balm container be reused?
Yes, the container can be washed, sanitised and refilled. Loosen wax residue by warming the container in hot water, then wash with dish soap, sanitise with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. For products intended for sale, we recommend using new containers each time.
Is this container suitable for products other than lip balm?
Yes, the container is suitable for any product that can be poured in liquid form and applied directly from the container once set. Typical examples include solid perfumes, stick balms for hands and cuticles, and technical waxes for leather and wood. It is not intended for liquid or cream formulations.
