Product description

A twist-up container for lip balm sticks made of polypropylene in yellow-orange. The product advances by rotating the base, and the cap slides onto the body of the container. Suitable for lip balms and other solid stick balms that need to hold their shape and be applied directly to the skin without finger contact.

PP plastic is lightweight and shatter-resistant, so the container holds up to being carried in a pocket or handbag. The colour helps distinguish variants within a range, for example a citrus balm from a mint one or sea buckthorn from honey. According to the technical documentation, the container is suitable for use with cosmetic products. It is of European manufacture.

How to fill the container

Before filling, rotate the base so that the internal mechanism is in its lowest position. Pour the melted mass into the container in a single pour to avoid air pockets in the stick, then leave it to set at room temperature. Trim any excess at the top edge and attach the cap. The stick then advances evenly and can be retracted.

With a new formula, fill one or two pieces first and test how the stick advances and applies. Only then fill the full batch.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first use – wash the container, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. Not even residual moisture should remain in an anhydrous formula.
  • Reuse – advance and remove the remaining product, wash the container with warm water, degrease and disinfect again. The mechanism stays functional as long as it is not forced when cleaning.
  • Consistency of the formula – a balm that is too soft will not hold in the mechanism and will smear; one that is too hard will crumble. Adjust the consistency with a test batch directly in this container.
  • Recycling – polypropylene is sorted with plastics.

Advance the stick only as far as needed for a single application. A stick extended too far is more likely to break during use.

Frequently asked questions

How do you fill a twist-up lip balm container?
Pour the melted mass directly into the container with the mechanism turned to its lowest position. Fill in a single pour and leave to set at room temperature before attaching the cap. For a larger batch, it is good practice to pour the mass to the brim and trim it level once set. The stick then has a flat surface and advances without resistance.
Can a lip balm container be reused?
Yes, the container can be cleaned and refilled. Advance and remove the remaining product, wash the container with warm water, degrease and disinfect with alcohol. It must be completely dry before the next fill, otherwise water will get into the anhydrous balm and shorten its shelf life.
Is the container suitable for products other than lip balm?
Yes, for anything that has a stick consistency once set and is applied directly to the skin. This includes solid perfumes and stick balms for dry skin areas such as elbows and heels. The requirement is a formula that holds its shape at normal temperature and neither smears nor crumbles when advanced.
Is the plastic container suitable for a balm with essential oils?
At concentrations typical for lip balms, yes. According to the technical documentation, the container is designed for cosmetic products, which standard balms with waxes, butters and oils fall into. For formulas with a higher proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend testing the container's behaviour with the specific formula, as with any custom fill-container combination.
Why does the stick break or smear when advanced?
The cause is almost always the consistency of the formula, not the container mechanism. A balm with a high oil content and low wax content will smear and not hold in the container. Conversely, a formula with too much wax will crumble when advanced. The ratio of waxes, butters and oils is adjusted with a test batch; it also helps to advance the stick only as far as needed for immediate use.
