Product description

The 70/400 plastic jar with a capacity of 200 ml is packaging for thick and semi-solid products applied with fingers or a spatula: creams, body butters, balms, masks and scrubs. The wide neck makes filling easy and ensures every last bit of the contents can be removed. The brown colouring reduces light transmission, which is appreciated by formulas containing vegetable oils, extracts and other light-sensitive ingredients.

The jar is made from PET, a lightweight plastic that won't shatter on impact the way glass would. This makes it suitable for the bathroom, travel and shipping finished products, where glass would add unnecessary weight and breakage risk. The packaging is also suitable for direct food contact, so it works well for herb blends, spices, teas and other home pantry supplies.

Why choose a brown PET jar

  • Light protection – the brown colour limits the amount of light reaching the contents. Oils prone to oxidation and coloured extracts are better protected than in a clear container.
  • Low weight and durability – PET won't break if dropped, which is practical for products used in the shower, around children or sold at markets.
  • Easy filling – the wide neck allows thick butters and creams to be filled with a spoon, spatula or piping bag.

Suitable product types

The 200 ml capacity suits products used in larger amounts: body butters and creams, whipped butters, sugar and salt scrubs, hair masks and conditioners, clay masks, bath salts and cream soaps. For facial creams and eye preparations, where only a small amount is used at a time, a smaller size is more practical, as the contents come into contact with air and fingers every time the jar is opened.

Products containing water require reliable preservation in a jar. An open container with a wide neck is more vulnerable to contamination than a tube or pump bottle. With anhydrous butters and balms, take care not to introduce water from wet hands during use.

PET must be protected from heat; at high temperatures the jar may deform. Let balms and butters cool down before filling and test-fill one unit first.

Nominal and total capacity

Nominal capacity is the amount the jar is intended to hold under normal filling conditions. Total capacity to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck and is somewhat larger. The difference provides a margin for the lid, any sealing insert and expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The jar should therefore be filled to the nominal capacity, not to the brim.

Cosmetics are often sold by weight, not volume. Whipped butter takes up the same space at a significantly lower weight than a dense scrub, so weigh the actual fill in grams using your own formula before stating it on the label.

Lid and closure

Lids with the same neck type (listed in the product parameters) and ready-made jar-and-lid combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal and the behaviour of the packaging with the specific formulation, especially for thinner emulsions and products intended for shipping.

What to know before filling

  • Chemicals and solvents – aggressive chemicals and strong solvents are not suitable for this jar. For products with a high proportion of alcohol or essential oils, carry out a compatibility test on a single unit.
  • Labelling – dimensions required for label design can be found in the product parameters. Labels adhere best to a dry, degreased surface, so apply them before filling or after thoroughly wiping the jar.
  • Reuse – for personal use, the jar can be washed, disinfected and refilled. A scratched interior surface is harder to clean; such a unit is better discarded.
  • Recycling – empty and clean jars should be placed in sorted plastic waste collection.

The jar has a declaration of conformity with the European packaging regulation and meets its limits for PFAS and heavy metals.

Frequently asked questions

Does a brown plastic jar protect the contents from light?
Yes, the brown colouring reduces the amount of light passing through the jar wall, offering better protection for light-sensitive ingredients than a clear container. It is not a complete barrier, however. Do not place a brown plastic jar containing a finished product on a windowsill or in direct sunlight; store it in a dry place away from heat sources.
Can hot balm or butter be poured into a PET jar?
No, do not pour a hot melt directly into a PET jar immediately after melting. PET must be protected from heat and may deform at high temperatures. Allow the melt to cool with occasional stirring to just above its setting point before filling. With a new formula, it is worth filling one unit first and checking the shape of the walls and base after it has set.
Is the 200 ml plastic jar suitable for food?
Yes, the 200 ml plastic jar is suitable for direct food contact under normal and foreseeable conditions of use. It is appropriate for herb blends, spices, teas, salts and other home pantry supplies. Do not fill it with hot food, as PET must be protected from heat and the jar could deform.
How to clean and disinfect a PET jar before filling?
Wash the PET jar with lukewarm water and dish soap, rinse, then spray or wipe with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Leave it to air-dry upside down on a clean surface. Boiling, hot steam, oven sterilisation and dishwashers are not suitable, as heat may deform the jar.
What products is a 70/400 neck jar suitable for?
A jar with a 70/400 neck is designed primarily for thick and semi-solid products: body butters, creams, scrubs, masks and balms. The wide neck allows the contents to be scooped out with fingers or a spatula, and the material is suitable for contact with cosmetic products. For products with a high proportion of alcohol or essential oils, we recommend carrying out a compatibility test on a single unit.
