Product description

The 500 ml soap bottle is a clear PET bottle with a 28/410 neck, designed primarily for liquid soap and other thicker rinse-off products – shower gels, shampoos, conditioners, and foaming cleansing gels for the bathroom and kitchen. The transparent wall shows the colour and consistency of the contents, making it suitable wherever the product should be visible: on a washbasin, in the shower, or on a retail counter. PET is lightweight and break-resistant, making it a practical choice for wet environments where glass would be a hazard. The packaging material is suitable for use with cosmetic products.

What the bottle is suitable for

  • Liquid soap and shower gels – thicker products dispense easily from the bottle with a pump.
  • Shampoos and conditioners – the 28/410 neck makes filling with viscous formulations straightforward.
  • Household cleaning products – washing-up liquid, cleaning gels, or liquid hand soap for the kitchen, provided the formulation is not aggressive towards plastic.
  • Refill packaging – the transparent wall makes it easy to monitor how much product remains, which is practical when topping up smaller dispensers.

Transparency and content protection

A clear bottle does not protect the contents from light. For standard liquid soaps, shower gels, and shampoos with a stable formulation this is not a concern, particularly if they are used regularly and stored in a bathroom away from direct sunlight. However, if the product contains light-sensitive ingredients – a higher proportion of essential oils, natural colorants, certain plant extracts, or active substances – it is advisable to opt for a dark container or to accept the possibility of colour and scent changes during use.

If you want to use the transparency as part of the product's appearance, choose a formulation with a stable colour and scent and store the product away from direct sunlight. Colour changes are visible sooner in a clear container than in dark glass.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for under normal filling conditions. The total brimful volume is the physical capacity up to the neck and is always larger. The difference between them provides headspace for the closure and dispenser – a pump has a dip tube and head that occupy part of the space – as well as room for the contents to expand with temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Filling right up to the neck will cause overflow when the pump is fitted and makes it harder to seal the closure properly. The nominal volume is stated in the product specifications.

Choosing a closure

The bottle has a 28/410 neck thread. Closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying seal integrity and dispensing performance with your specific formulation, particularly for thick products where the dip tube diameter and pump output matter.

What to know when filling

  • Preparation before first use – we recommend rinsing the bottle, sanitising it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allowing it to dry completely. Residual water in the container increases microbiological risk even in preserved products.
  • Filling temperature – PET is not intended for hot filling. Allow liquid soap, shampoo, or gel to cool to room temperature before filling; warm contents can deform the bottle wall.
  • Essential oils and solvents – at normal fragrance usage levels in rinse-off products, PET is stable. At high concentrations of essential oils, concentrated fragrance compositions, or where the contents include solvents, we recommend verifying compatibility on a test batch – including checking whether the container changes shape or becomes cloudy.
  • Content viscosity – thick gels fill more slowly and air bubbles form when poured too quickly. Filling slowly along the bottle wall and allowing a short resting time before fitting the pump will help.
  • Labelling – the flat wall provides a surface for a label. With a clear bottle, consider a label that does not cover the entire contents so that the level of product remains visible.
  • Reuse – the bottle can be refilled after thorough washing and disinfection. When switching product types (for example, from a scented soap to an unscented gel), be aware that PET may retain some of the previous scent.

The bottle is intended for cosmetic products and standard cleaning agents. Do not use it for aggressive chemicals, concentrated acids, alkalis, or organic solvents – these can damage PET and compromise the seal of the closure.

The bottle is made from PET, which is a commonly recycled plastic. Once empty and rinsed, it belongs in the plastic waste stream.

Frequently asked questions

Is a clear PET bottle suitable for liquid soap containing essential oils?
At standard fragrance usage levels in a rinse-off product, yes – PET does not generally react with essential oils at those concentrations. At higher proportions of essential oils, we recommend verifying compatibility on a test batch and bearing in mind that the clear wall does not protect the scent or colour from light. For products with sensitive ingredients, a dark bottle is the safer choice.
How much liquid soap fits in a bottle with a nominal volume of 500 ml?
The bottle is designed to be filled to its nominal volume, i.e. 500 ml. The physical capacity to the neck is greater, but that space serves as headspace for the pump or cap and allows for content expansion. Filling right to the brim will cause overflow when the closure is fitted and will result in a poorer seal.
Can a plastic soap bottle be filled with warm contents?
No, PET is not designed for hot filling. Allow liquid soap, shower gel, or shampoo to cool to room temperature before filling. Warm contents can deform the bottle wall and, once cooled, the container may shrink, which impairs both the seal of the closure and the appearance of the packaging.
How to clean a PET soap bottle before reuse?
Rinse the bottle with warm water and a small amount of cleaning agent, rinse thoroughly, and disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Allow it to dry completely neck-down before refilling. Do not use boiling water or a dishwasher – high temperatures deform PET.
Which closure fits a plastic soap bottle with a 28/410 neck thread?
Any closure with the same 28/410 neck thread will fit the bottle. A pump is the most practical option for liquid soaps and gels; a flip-top or disc cap works well for shampoos and shower gels. Suitable closures and ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend verifying the seal with your specific product.
