Product description

A lever sprayer with a 24/410 thread is a bottle closure that, when the lever is pressed, disperses thin liquid contents onto the skin, hair, or a surface. It is best suited for formulations applied in larger amounts and repeatedly: hair tonics, body sprays, hydrolats, and household cleaning products.

The sprayer body is made of polypropylene (PP), a lightweight and shatter-resistant plastic. The white version with a smooth collar suits both white and clear bottles. The sprayer is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; a declaration of conformity is available with the product.

Suitable formulations

The lever mechanism works best with thin liquids that behave similarly to water. The thicker the contents, the worse they spray and the more force is needed to press the lever.

  • Hair care – hair tonics, leave-in detangling sprays, salt sprays, and styling products where even coverage along the full length of the hair is needed.
  • Body and face sprays – hydrolats, body mists, and refreshing waters applied over a larger area.
  • Household – surface, window, and bathroom cleaners, fabric and air fresheners, ironing water.
  • Plants and workshop – misting plants and technical applications where a plain water-based solution is sufficient.

The dose per press is listed in the product parameters. It helps estimate how many pumps are needed per application and how long the fill will last.

Fitting onto the bottle and adjusting the dip tube

The sprayer is supplied with a long dip tube that is cut to length to match the height of the specific bottle. The tube should reach just above the bottom. If it is too long, it will bend inside the bottle and prevent the sprayer from being screwed on properly. If it is too short, the remaining contents cannot be dispensed.

Hold the sprayer alongside the outside of the bottle, measure the length to the bottom, and cut the tube clean with scissors at an angle. The angled cut prevents the end of the tube from sealing against the bottom and interrupting the suction.

After fitting onto a filled bottle, press the lever several times dry until the mechanism fills with liquid. Only then will the sprayer dispense evenly.

Fill the bottle to its nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the volume the bottle is designed for under normal filling conditions. The total capacity to the brim is the physical volume right up to the neck. The difference between the two is a reserve for the sprayer mechanism with its dip tube and for the expansion of the contents with temperature changes. Overfilling the bottle will cause it to overflow when fitting the closure.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first use – flush the sprayer by pumping clean water through it, then pump isopropyl alcohol or 70% ethanol through it and leave to air-dry. This also disinfects the inside of the mechanism and the dip tube, which cannot otherwise be reached.
  • Solid particles and turbidity – undissolved powders, clays, glitter, and plant debris clog the nozzle. Filter infusions and macerated contents before filling.
  • Changing the fill – pump warm water through the mechanism to remove any residue from the previous contents, then disinfect it again.

Concentrated essential oils, fragrance compounds, and strong solvents can degrade plastic parts and seals over time. For formulations with a higher proportion of these ingredients, carry out a test: leave the filled bottle with the sprayer standing for several weeks and observe the seal integrity, the movement of the lever, and the appearance of the plastic.

Bottles for the sprayer

The sprayer fits bottles with a 24/410 neck. The neck type is listed in the parameters of each bottle. Bottles with this neck as well as ready-made bottle-and-sprayer combinations are available from Handymade. For your own combination, we recommend testing the seal and output with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

Which bottle does the 24/410 lever sprayer fit?
The 24/410 lever sprayer fits any bottle with a 24/410 neck, regardless of its material or volume. The neck type must be the same on both the bottle and the closure, otherwise the closure will not seal. For bottles, this information is listed in the parameters. After fitting, check that the sprayer is tightened down and that the dip tube reaches just above the bottom.
How do you shorten the dip tube of a lever sprayer?
The dip tube of a lever sprayer is shortened with scissors to the length at which it reaches just above the bottom of the bottle. Measure the length by holding the sprayer alongside the outside of the bottle and cut the tube at an angle so it does not seal against the bottom. A tube that is too long will bend inside the bottle and prevent the closure from being tightened. One that is too short will leave unused contents at the bottom.
Is a lever sprayer suitable for oils and thicker formulations?
A lever sprayer is not suitable for neat oils, gels, or emulsions, as thick contents will not atomise and will either come out in a stream or not at all. It works reliably with thin water-based and hydroalcoholic liquids. For two-phase formulations and contents with an oil fraction, the result depends on the specific recipe, so test them in advance. For thick formulations, a pump dispenser is more appropriate.
Can the 24/410 lever sprayer be used with alcohol or essential oil formulations?
Yes, the polypropylene 24/410 lever sprayer can be used with standard hydroalcoholic formulations and sprays with a low essential oil content. Caution is warranted at high concentrations of fragrance ingredients and solvents, which can degrade the plastic and seals over time. Test such a formulation first: leave the filled bottle with the sprayer standing for several weeks and check whether it seals and whether the lever moves smoothly.
How do you clean a lever sprayer before reuse?
A lever sprayer is cleaned by pumping liquid through it. Submerge the dip tube in warm water and press the lever until clean water comes through with no trace of the previous contents. Then pump isopropyl alcohol or 70% ethanol through in the same way and leave the sprayer to air-dry. After thicker or oily contents, add a drop of washing-up liquid to the first water.
