Nominal and total volume

The tin is designed to be filled to the nominal volume, which corresponds to the standard amount of product in the packaging. The total volume to the brim is the physical capacity up to the neck and is larger. The difference provides headspace for the lid with its insert and for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes – for example when a balm softens in summer. The tin should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Exact values for both volumes are listed in the product parameters.

Use in formulation

The aluminium tin is best suited to anhydrous formulations with a solid or semi-solid texture. They scoop out easily, and the opaque packaging simultaneously protects them from light.

For aqueous and emulsion products – such as creams, gels, or tonics – aluminium requires more care. Prolonged contact with water, salts, or acidic ingredients can gradually degrade the metal. If you plan to fill an emulsion or a product with a lower pH, verify compatibility with a stability test in the finished formulation.

Good to know

Before first use, wash both the tin and the lid, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allow to dry completely. The sealing insert in the lid is made from expanded polyethylene (EPE), so do not expose it to high temperatures or soak it in solvents for longer than is necessary for disinfection.

The tin can be reused after thorough cleaning. If visible scratches or dull spots appear on the inner wall, do not use it for cosmetics. Aluminium is a soft metal and the thread can deform if the lid is tightened against hard residue – wipe the thread clean before closing.
