Product description

An aluminium jar with lid is a lightweight, shatterproof container with a wide mouth, designed primarily for solid and semi-solid cosmetic products: balms, body butters, ointments, waxes, and solid cosmetics. Aluminium blocks light, so it protects the contents better than clear glass or plastic.

The nominal volume of 150 ml corresponds to a larger body care size or a family-size balm. The wide mouth makes it easy to fill with thick mixtures and to scoop out the product with fingers or a spatula. The screw-on lid is included with the jar and features a foamed polyethylene (EPE) liner that seals against the rim of the mouth when tightened.

What products the jar is suitable for

It works best with anhydrous products that are poured in molten or pressed into the container:

  • Balms and ointments – blends of oils, butters, and waxes that are poured hot and set solid in the jar.
  • Body butters and whipped butters – the wide mouth allows filling with a spoon or a piping bag.
  • Solid shampoos, conditioners, and solid perfumes – the jar can serve as a travel case for carry-on luggage.
  • Waxes and pomades – beard and hair waxes, as well as technical waxes for leather or wood.
  • Oil-based scrubs – sugar scrubs in an oil base. Test salt-based scrubs on a sample first, as salty contents can react with aluminium.

The container is suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration can be found in the product parameters.

Advantages of aluminium packaging

  • Light protection – the opaque metal protects vegetable oils, butters, and essential oils, which oxidise faster and lose their scent when exposed to light.
  • Low weight – the jar weighs a fraction of a glass container of the same volume, which is an advantage for shipping as well as travelling.
  • Drop resistance – aluminium will not shatter, making it suitable for the bathroom, a sports bag, or travel.
  • Hot filling – molten balm can be poured directly into the jar, and the thin metal wall helps the contents cool down quickly.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the quantity the jar is designed for under normal filling conditions. Total brim-full volume is the physical capacity up to the mouth and is always slightly larger. The difference between them provides clearance for the lid with its sealing liner and for volume changes in the contents with temperature. The jar should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Both values can be found in the product parameters.

Preparation and filling

Before first use, wash both the jar and lid with warm water and a mild detergent, dry thoroughly, and wipe or spray with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol (IPA). Allow the alcohol to evaporate completely before filling. Do not soak the sealing liner in the lid; wiping it is sufficient.

For hot filling, place the jar on a flat, heat-resistant surface. Aluminium conducts heat very well, so the walls become hot immediately after pouring. Do not handle the jar until the contents have cooled.

Attach the lid only after the contents have cooled and set completely. If the jar is closed while still warm, moisture condenses under the lid, which does not belong in an anhydrous product.

Good to know

Aluminium can react with strongly acidic, alkaline, or salty contents. This manifests as darkening of the metal or a colour change in the product. For creams, gels, and other water-containing products, always test on a sample first.

Do not use the jar for mixing or pouring fresh soap batter. Both sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide react violently with aluminium and will ruin both the container and the soap.

The jar walls are thin and may dent under strong pressure or impact. When shipping finished products, it is worth using sturdy cardboard and padding. Tighten the lid thread with care to avoid deforming it.

A label can be applied to both the lid and the body of the jar; the dimensions needed for label design are in the parameters. Degrease the surface with alcohol before applying the label so it adheres properly even when in contact with oils.

Frequently asked questions

Does an aluminium jar protect the contents from light?
Yes, aluminium is opaque and blocks light entirely. This is an advantage for products containing vegetable oils, butters, essential oils, or natural pigments, which oxidise or fade faster when exposed to light. The screwed-on lid with its sealing liner protects the contents from air, so it is worth closing the jar securely after every use.
Can hot balm or butter be poured into an aluminium jar?
Yes, molten anhydrous blends can be poured directly into an aluminium jar. Aluminium tolerates heat but conducts it quickly, so the walls become hot immediately after pouring and the jar must be left to stand on a flat, heat-resistant surface. The lid is applied only after the contents have cooled completely; otherwise moisture condenses underneath it.
Is an aluminium jar suitable for water-containing creams?
An aluminium jar is best suited to anhydrous products; for water-containing creams and gels, compatibility must be verified first. Aluminium can react with strongly acidic, alkaline, or salty contents, which manifests as a colour change in the metal or the product. Before producing a larger batch, we recommend filling a test sample and monitoring it for several weeks to check whether either the metal or the contents change.
How much product fits in the 150 ml aluminium jar?
The jar is designed for 150 ml of product, which is its nominal volume under normal filling conditions. The weight of the fill depends on density: anhydrous balms and butters are lighter than water, so 150 ml weighs less than 150 g, and whipped butters considerably less. For the quantity stated on the label, we recommend determining it by weighing a filled sample.
Can an aluminium jar be reused?
Yes, an aluminium jar can be washed and refilled after it has been emptied. Wash by hand with warm water and a mild detergent, then dry thoroughly and wipe with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. A dishwasher is not suitable, as alkaline detergents cause aluminium to dull and darken. Before the next fill, check that the sealing liner in the lid is clean and undamaged.
