Product description

Amber glass bottle, square, roll-on, 30 ml

Ready-made kit for roll-on preparations: a square amber glass medicine bottle, a metal roller ball in a plastic insert and a black cap with an 18/410 neck finish. Amber glass filters light, so the kit suits contents that are sensitive to light, for example blends of essential oils in a carrier oil, oil-based perfumes, alcohol-based perfume compositions or liquid serums for small areas of skin. The square shape keeps the bottle in place, so it does not roll across the table or inside a bag.

The roller ball applies the preparation directly to the skin without contact with your fingers, and the dose is small and even. For makers, the kit is suitable for samples, smaller batches and their own roll-on products for the temples, wrists, joints or behind the ears.

What the kit consists of

  • Glass medicine bottle – amber glass with an 18 mm neck, nominal volume 30 ml. “Medicine bottle” is the name of a bottle shape with a narrower neck and straight walls; it has nothing to do with medicinal use.
  • Metal roller ball – a steel ball seated in a plastic (PP) insert that is pressed into the neck of the bottle. Metal feels cooler to the touch than plastic, which suits roll-on products for the temples or the eye area.
  • Black cap – a plastic (PP) closure with an 18/410 thread that covers the roller ball and prevents the contents from leaking during transport.

All three components are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and you will find the declarations of conformity with the product. The kit has no food-contact certificate, so it is intended for cosmetics.

Nominal and total volume

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed to hold under normal filling. The total volume to the brim, given in the parameters, is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them leaves room for the roller ball insert, which extends into the neck, and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. Fill the bottle up to the nominal volume.

If you fill the bottle right up to the neck, part of the contents will overflow when you press in the insert with the roller ball. Leave free space equal to the difference between the nominal and the total volume.

What it is suitable for

Roll-on application works best with liquid and thin contents that the ball picks up smoothly as it turns and transfers to the skin. These include:

  • oil-based perfumes and blends of essential oils in jojoba, sweet almond or fractionated coconut oil,
  • alcohol-based perfume compositions and eau de parfum,
  • liquid serums for the eye area, for the lips or for local use,
  • aromatherapy blends for the temples, wrists or back of the hand.

Thick gels, creams and emulsions with a higher viscosity dispense poorly or not at all through the roller ball. For such formulations, it is better to choose a bottle with a dropper or a jar.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash the bottle, the insert with the roller ball and the cap, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let them dry completely. When filling, measure the contents into the bottle, press the insert with the roller ball straight into the neck until it clicks, and finally screw on the cap.

For your own formulations, we recommend checking the tightness, smooth dispensing and behaviour of the materials with your specific contents, especially at higher concentrations of essential oils and in alcohol-based blends that come into contact with the plastic insert and cap. A short test with the bottle lying on its side will show whether the closure holds and the roller ball does not leak.

A carrier oil is easier to dispense into the bottle through a small funnel or with a dropper. Add the essential oils last and mix the contents by gently turning the bottle upside down, only after the roller ball and cap have been fitted.

The glass bottle withstands repeated use, and after the bottle is empty, the insert with the roller ball can be prised out, washed and fitted again. If it sits looser in the neck after removal, it is better to replace it. Other closures with the same neck type from the Handymade range can also be used on the 18 mm neck; ready-made combinations have their own description.

When sorting waste, separate the glass from the plastic cap and from the insert with the roller ball, which combines plastic with steel.

Frequently asked questions

Does the amber glass of the roll-on bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass lets through significantly less light than clear glass, so it slows the changes that light causes in essential oils, vegetable oils and perfume compositions. However, it does not replace an antioxidant or correct storage away from direct sun and heat. For light-sensitive ingredients, amber glass is a better choice than a clear bottle.
How much does a 30 ml roll-on bottle hold?
The bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 30 ml, although physically more fits into it. The margin is needed for the roller ball insert, which extends into the neck when fitted, and for the expansion of the contents in warmer weather. If you fill to the brim, the contents will overflow when the roller ball is pressed in.
Is the glass roll-on bottle suitable for water-based and alcohol-based contents?
The bottle, the insert with the roller ball and the cap are declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. For alcohol-based and water-based formulations, we recommend checking in advance the tightness and the behaviour of the metal roller ball and the plastic insert with your specific contents, especially during longer storage. Water-based preparations without a preservative are not recommended in a roll-on format, because the roller ball touches the skin with every use.
Can the roll-on bottle be used repeatedly?
Yes, once the bottle is empty, wash the glass bottle and the cap, disinfect them with alcohol and refill the bottle after they dry. Prise the insert with the roller ball out of the neck, clean it and fit it back. If it sits looser or leaks after repeated fitting, replace it with a new one, otherwise the contents may leak.
Why does thick content dispense poorly through the roller ball?
The roller ball transfers to the skin only the thin layer of liquid that flows onto it as it turns. Thick gels, creams and emulsions do not move in the narrow space around the ball, so little or nothing is left on the skin. The roll-on format is therefore intended for liquid oils, perfumes and thin serums, while thick formulations belong in a jar or tube.
