What it is suitable for

• Face and body oils – light promotes oil oxidation, so dark packaging is one of the basic measures for keeping an oil-based product in good condition for longer.
• Serums and toners with active ingredients – vitamin C, retinol, plant extracts and hydrosols are commonly filled into packaging that reduces light exposure. The 100 ml volume corresponds to a typical retail size for a toner or facial water.
• Bathroom products – shower oils, cleansing oils or micellar waters, where glass is not suitable because of the risk of breakage on a wet floor.
• Travel sizes and larger samples – 100 ml matches the liquids limit for hand luggage, and unbreakable packaging is safer for travel than glass.

Volume and filling

The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed for under normal filling. The brim-full capacity, that is the physical volume up to the neck, is higher and can be found in the parameters. The difference between the two values provides room for the closure, dropper or pump and for the expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If it is filled to the brim, the dip tube of the pump may push some of the contents out, or the contents may get into the thread after closing and the closure will stop sealing.

Good to know

• Preparation before first filling – rinse the bottles, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely with the neck facing down. Residual water in a water-based product increases the demands on preservation, and in an anhydrous product it is undesirable.
• PET and heat – products are filled only after they have cooled to room temperature. A hot emulsion or a mixture that is still setting can deform the plastic wall. Do not leave filled bottles in a sunny spot or near a heat source.
• Essential oils and solvents – for products with a high proportion of essential oils, citrus terpenes or organic solvents, first fill one bottle and check over several weeks whether the wall turns cloudy, softens or changes shape. Do not expose the packaging to aggressive chemicals.
• Closures – all closures with a 24/410 neck finish fit the bottle, and the Handymade range also includes ready-made bottle + closure combinations. If you assemble your own combination, check the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.
• Reuse – after thorough washing and disinfection, the bottle can be filled again. Before the next filling, check the thread and the neck for scuffing or damage.
• Recycling – the bottle is made of PET with material code 1. It is enough to rinse the empty bottle, remove the closure made of a different material and hand it in for separate plastic waste collection.
