Product description

Vegetable oils, tinctures and serums in amber glass last longer without changes to scent or colour. This glass bottle in a boston round shape with a nominal volume of 100 ml and a 28 mm threaded neck is designed for liquid cosmetic and food products that are sensitive to light: oil serums, herbal extracts, tonics, syrups and alcohol-based preparations. Boston round is a shape name for a straight body with a short neck, not a designation for a specific type of content.

The bottle is suitable for direct food contact as well as for use with cosmetic products, so it works equally well for home-macerated oil and facial serum. It is supplied in packs of 72 pieces, a practical quantity for small-scale production or workshops filling a larger number of identical products at once.

Why choose amber glass

  • Light protection – amber glass transmits significantly less light than clear glass, slowing the degradation of oils, essential oils and plant extracts that yellow, change scent or lose efficacy when exposed to light.
  • Chemical stability of glass – glass does not react with oils, alcohol or essential oils and does not release unwanted substances into the contents. It is therefore also suitable for concentrated and alcohol-based preparations where some plastics could be problematic.
  • Reusability – the bottle can be reused after thorough washing and disinfection, which is useful for in-house production or test batches.
  • One thread, multiple closures – the 28 mm thread allows the bottle to be combined with various types of closures, so you do not need to change the packaging when changing the dispensing method.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume for which the container is intended under normal filling conditions and which is stated on the label. Total brimful volume is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between the two is headspace – room for the closure, dropper or pump, and for expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The bottle should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Specific values for both volumes are given in the product parameters.

When filling thicker oils or products that expand at higher temperatures, leave the headspace above the nominal volume unused. From an overfilled bottle, the contents may overflow through the neck after fitting a dropper or pump.

Choosing a closure

The bottle has a threaded neck of the type specified in the product parameters. Closures with the same neck type – caps, droppers, pumps and spray tops – and ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With a custom combination, we recommend checking seal integrity, dosing accuracy and closure behaviour with the specific formulation in advance. Oils and alcohol-based preparations can stress some seals.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first fill – wash new bottles in warm water, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry completely with the neck facing down. Residual water in the bottle can spoil anhydrous products and oils.
  • Glass and heat – glass can withstand hot water during cleaning, but reacts sensitively to sudden temperature changes. Do not pour hot contents into a cold bottle or vice versa. Allow both the product and the container to equalise temperature.
  • Labelling – the straight body of the boston round allows easy label application. Dimensions suitable for labelling are in the product parameters.
  • Weight and shipping – glass is heavier and more fragile than plastic. When shipping finished products, allow for adequate cushioning and higher parcel weight.
  • Recycling – the bottle is made of glass and once empty belongs in glass recycling.

Amber glass protects the contents from light, not from heat or air. Products sensitive to oxidation (such as oils with a high content of unsaturated fatty acids) still need a suitable antioxidant and a tight-fitting closure.

Frequently asked questions

Does an amber glass bottle protect the contents from light?
Yes, amber glass significantly limits the transmission of light that damages oils and plant extracts. It is therefore suitable for vegetable and essential oils, tinctures and serums with sensitive active ingredients. However, this is not complete protection – bottles should still be stored away from direct sunlight.
Is the 100 ml glass bottle suitable for food use?
Yes, the bottle is suitable for direct food contact under normal conditions of use and also for use with cosmetic products. It can therefore be used for home-macerated oils, syrups, herbal extracts or cosmetic oils and serums. The test report and declaration of conformity are listed with the product.
How many ml does the 100 ml bottle actually hold?
The bottle holds somewhat more than the nominal volume of 100 ml, but it should be filled to the nominal volume only. The difference between the nominal and total volume is headspace for the closure, dropper or pump, and for expansion of the contents. The exact value of the total brimful volume is in the product parameters.
Can the glass bottle be reused?
Yes, glass can be washed and reused. Wash the bottle thoroughly with warm water and a cleaning agent, rinse, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave to dry completely. When changing the type of contents (for example from an essential oil to a water-based tonic), make sure no residual scent remains in the glass.
Which closure fits the glass bottle with a 28 mm thread?
Closures with the same neck type specified in the product parameters fit the bottle – caps, droppers, pumps and spray tops. Suitable closures and ready-made bottle + closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. With alcohol and oil contents, before filling an entire production run, check that the seal of the chosen closure does not soften or leak.
