Product description

Plastic flip top 20 mm is a cap with a hinged lid for bottles and small bottles with a 20/410 neck. It screws onto the bottle and the contents are then dispensed through a small opening at the top after flipping open the lid, without unscrewing the entire cap. It is particularly suitable for liquid and slightly thick products that are used frequently and in small doses: shower gels and shampoos in travel bottles, body lotions, liquid soaps, facial toners, massage or body oils, and micellar cleansing waters.

The cap is made from polypropylene (PP) and is suitable for use with cosmetic products. The black colour is neutral, pairs well with glass and plastic in any colour, and visually unifies an entire product line.

Key benefits

  • Convenient single-hand dispensing – the lid flips open with the thumb, the contents are squeezed or poured through the opening, and the lid snaps shut again. For everyday use in the shower or when removing make-up, this is more practical than a screw cap.
  • Controlled amount – the small opening restricts flow, so tilting the bottle does not spill more than needed. Particularly advantageous with liquid soaps, facial toners, and oils.
  • Protection of contents between uses – the closed lid prevents drying out, dust and air contact with the contents, which is appreciated with products containing natural oils.
  • Lightweight and shatter-resistant – polypropylene is impact-resistant, tolerates the humid environment of the bathroom, and adds no weight to the bottle. Therefore suitable for travel and sample-sized packaging.
  • Easy combination – the 20/410 thread is a common neck type, so the cap fits a wide range of bottles and small bottles from our range.

Use and bottle selection

The cap is designed for bottles with a 20/410 neck type. Bottles and small bottles with the same neck type as well as ready-made bottle + cap combinations are available from Handymade. When making your own combination, we recommend checking the seal and dispensing with the specific formulation.

The flip top works best with liquid to medium-viscosity products. Very thin contents (tonics, hydrolats, micellar waters) may pour out faster than intended when the bottle is tilted sharply. For these, a spray or dropper cap is usually more suitable. Conversely, thick creams and butters are difficult to push through the small opening and are better suited to a jar or pump.

For oils and oil serums, a flip top is a practical alternative to a dropper. It dispenses less precisely, but is faster and more durable for everyday use in the bathroom.

What's good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – we recommend washing the cap, disinfecting it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allowing it to dry completely. This applies to repeated use as well. Rinse the opening in the lid thoroughly to ensure no residue from the previous product remains.
  • Seal – tighten the cap straight and with moderate force. Before travelling, do a test by turning the bottle upside down. With thin contents and sudden pressure changes (aeroplane), it is worth placing the bottle in a resealable bag.
  • Material resistance – polypropylene tolerates aqueous solutions, surfactant systems, and common vegetable oils well. With products containing a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, we recommend testing the cap's behaviour in the finished formulation, especially during longer storage.
  • Lid hinge – with daily opening, the hinge gradually wears, which is natural for any hinged cap. When refilling, check that the lid still snaps shut firmly.
  • Recycling – the polypropylene cap (PP 5) belongs in plastic waste. Separate it from the glass bottle before disposal.

The flip top is not a child-resistant cap. For products that must be protected from being opened by children, choose a cap with a child safety lock.

Frequently asked questions

Which bottles does the plastic flip top 20 mm fit?
The plastic flip top 20 mm fits all bottles and small bottles with a 20/410 neck type. This is a common neck type for cosmetic bottles in both glass and plastic. The thread type of the bottle can be found in its specifications. If it matches 20/410, the cap will fit. Ready-made bottle + cap combinations are available in our range.
Is a flip top cap suitable for oils?
Yes, a flip top is suitable for vegetable and massage oils. The small opening allows the oil to be poured out in small amounts, and the closed lid limits air contact, which helps protect the oil from oxidation. For oil serums dispensed drop by drop, a dropper is more precise. However, a flip top is more practical for larger quantities and everyday use.
Can a flip top cap be used for thin liquids such as tonics or hydrolats?
It can be used, but dispensing is less controlled. Thin aqueous solutions flow quickly through the opening and it is easy to pour out more than needed when tilting the bottle. For tonics, hydrolats, and micellar waters, a spray or cap with a dropper is usually more suitable, as these dispense in small amounts.
How is the plastic flip top cleaned before repeated use?
Wash the cap with warm water and a small amount of cleaning agent, rinse the opening in the lid, and then disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. Before refilling, it must be completely dry so that no water or residue from the previous product gets into the new contents. Polypropylene withstands regular washing without any issues.
Does the flip top seal when travelling?
When properly tightened and with the lid snapped shut, the cap is designed for regular carrying and use. With thin contents, pressure changes on an aeroplane, or when the bottle lies on its side for extended periods, we recommend testing the seal with the specific product and placing the bottle in a resealable bag.
Is the black flip top suitable for cosmetics?
Yes, the cap is suitable for use with cosmetic products. It is made from polypropylene, which is commonly used for cosmetic caps and tolerates both aqueous and oily contents well. The declaration of conformity and related documentation can be found with the product.
