Product description

A clear glass bottle 50 ml is packaging for liquid and semi-liquid products where the contents should be visible at a glance. Through the clear glass you can see the colour, clarity and remaining volume, which is useful for facial serums, tonics, oil blends and two-phase products.

Glass is chemically resistant to common cosmetic ingredients and does not retain the scent of previous contents. The bottle is suitable for contact with cosmetic products and also for direct food contact, so it can also be used for homemade syrups or infused oils.

Suitable products

Depending on the chosen closure, the bottle is used for various types of contents:

  • Facial serums and oil blends – dispensed drop by drop with a dropper, larger doses with a pump.
  • Tonics, facial waters and hydrolats – thin, water-based contents are applied with a spray or on a cotton pad.
  • Tinctures and alcohol extracts – glass tolerates a high alcohol content.
  • Light emulsions and body oils – thinner milks and oils that flow through a narrow neck.
  • Samples and test batches – through the clear glass you can monitor settling, phase separation or colour change without opening.

Thick creams, butters and balms are difficult to fill and dispense through a narrow neck, so a jar is a better choice for them.

Clear glass does not protect the contents from light. Products containing light-sensitive ingredients are better filled into amber glass, or the bottle should be stored in a box or a closed cabinet.

Nominal and total volume

Packaging is described with two volumes. Nominal volume is the quantity the bottle is intended for under normal filling conditions, in this case 50 ml. Total brim volume is the physical volume up to the top of the neck and is slightly larger.

The difference between them is headspace. It is taken up by the part of the closure that extends into the bottle (the dropper tube or pump dip tube), and it allows the contents room to expand with temperature changes. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The exact brim volume value is listed in the product parameters.

Before the first production run, it is worth filling one bottle and fitting the closure as a test. A dropper or pump will push some of the contents upward, so the test piece can be used to set the correct fill level for the entire batch.

Closure and neck

The bottle is supplied without a closure and has a neck diameter of 18 mm. The exact thread type is listed in the parameters. Closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range. When using your own combination, we recommend testing the seal, dispensing behaviour and overall performance with the specific formulation, particularly with very thin or conversely more viscous contents.

Preparation before filling and reuse

Before the first fill, the bottle is washed with warm water and a cleaning agent, rinsed thoroughly and disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. It is then left to dry completely, neck down, on a clean surface. Residual water in the bottle is a risk especially for anhydrous products and products with weaker preservation.

Glass can be used repeatedly. After oily contents, hot water with detergent and a narrow brush will help; after fragrance and essential oils, rinse with alcohol. A dispensing closure is harder to clean than the bottle itself, so we recommend replacing it with a new one when refilling.

What is good to know

  • Glass and temperature – it tolerates hot water when washing, but is sensitive to sudden temperature changes. Do not pour hot contents into a cold bottle, and do not rinse a warm bottle with cold water.
  • Labelling – the smooth glass surface is suitable for self-adhesive labels. The surface should be dry and degreased before application. The dimensions needed for label design are in the parameters.
  • Shipping – glass is heavier than plastic and can break; when dispatching finished products, protective packaging should be accounted for.
  • Recycling – glass can be recycled repeatedly; the closure is sorted separately according to its material.

Frequently asked questions

Does a clear glass bottle protect the contents from light?
No, clear glass transmits light and does not protect the contents from it. It is suitable for products that are not light-sensitive, or where the contents should be visible. For formulations with vitamin C, retinoids or oils prone to oxidation, amber glass is a better choice; alternatively, store the bottle in a box and away from direct sunlight.
How much product fits in a 50 ml glass bottle?
The bottle is designed for 50 ml of product, which is its nominal volume. Physically, slightly more fits up to the brim, but that space serves as headspace for the closure and for the contents to expand with temperature changes. Filling to the brim would cause a dropper or pump to push the contents out and the closure might not seal properly.
Is the glass bottle suitable for essential oils and alcohol-based blends?
Yes, glass is resistant to essential oils, alcohol and vegetable oils and does not retain their scent. The bottle can therefore be used for oil blends, tinctures and alcohol extracts. Attention should be paid to the closure: we recommend verifying its seal and performance with concentrated essential oils on a test piece with the specific formulation.
What closure fits a glass bottle with an 18 mm neck?
The bottle takes a closure with the same thread type as its neck. The exact designation is in the product parameters. The type of closure is chosen according to the contents: a dropper for serums and oils dispensed drop by drop, a spray for thin water-based products, a pump for thinner emulsions. The bottle is supplied without a closure; ready-made combinations are listed separately in the range.
Can the 50 ml glass bottle also be used for food?
Yes, the bottle is suitable for direct food contact under normal and intended conditions of use. It works well for homemade tinctures, herbal extracts, syrups, flavourings or infused oils in smaller quantities. Food suitability applies to the bottle itself. For the closure, verify that it has the same designation.
