Product description

Glass jar with black lid – complete set for creams and balms

A glass jar with a black lid is a ready-to-use packaging for face creams, eye creams, balms, body butters and ointments – for thicker products that are scooped with a finger or spatula. The set consists of a clear glass jar with a capacity of 50 ml, a black plastic lid and an inner liner, so it is ready for direct filling. Clear glass shows the colour and texture of the contents and works well wherever the product needs to be visible – in gift packaging, at market stalls or in the range of a small workshop.

Glass is chemically stable: it does not react with oils, butters or essential oils, and does not absorb the scent or colour of the contents. The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetic products. It is not intended for food use.

What the set consists of

  • 50 ml glass jar – clear, with a wide neck, from which the contents can be scooped comfortably even when the cream is thick or solidified.
  • Black plastic lid – screw-on, with a soft foam liner on the inside that, when tightened, seats on the neck and seals the jar.
  • Inner liner – a white plastic disc placed directly on the surface of the product under the lid. It limits contact of the contents with air and prevents the cream from smearing onto the lid during transport.

Suitable for products such as

  • Face and eye creams – a volume of 50 ml corresponds to standard day-care packaging.
  • Balms and ointments – anhydrous products based on butters and waxes can be filled into glass in a warm liquid state and left to solidify directly in the jar.
  • Body butters and thicker scrubs – the wide neck makes it easier to scoop thick textures.
  • Solid perfumes and cream deodorants – glass does not absorb scent, so after washing it can be used for a different product.

The jar is not suitable for thin emulsions, tonics and oils. Liquid contents are difficult to dispense and spill easily when opened.

Nominal and total volume

Nominal volume is the volume for which the jar is intended during normal filling, and corresponds to the amount of product stated on the label. Total volume to the brim is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them is the allowance for the inner liner and lid, and also the space to prevent the contents from expanding into the closure when the temperature changes. The jar is filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. If overfilled, the liner will not seat on the surface and the lid cannot be tightened without squeezing out the cream.

Weigh the fill rather than measuring it by volume. Creams and butters have different densities, so 50 ml of different products corresponds to different weights in grams. Record in your formulation how many grams fit into the jar at the correct fill level.

Useful to know

Preparation before first filling. Wash the jar and lid before use, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. The inner liner only needs to be disinfected and dried. Residual water or alcohol in the jar can compromise an anhydrous product or dilute an emulsion.

Hot filling. Glass can withstand filling with warm balms, but does not tolerate thermal shock. Allow cold jars to reach room temperature before pouring hot material, or warm them slightly beforehand. Insert the liner only after the contents have fully solidified and cooled.

Light. Clear glass does not protect the contents from light. Formulations containing sensitive oils, vitamins or plant extracts should be kept away from direct sunlight, or an antioxidant should be added. For markedly light-sensitive formulations, dark glass is more suitable.

A transparent label also works well on clear glass, letting the contents stand out.

Reuse and recycling. Glass can be reused after thorough washing and disinfection. For recycling, the jar goes into glass waste, while the lid and liner go into plastics – separate them before disposal.

A glass jar is heavier and more fragile than a plastic one. When shipping by post, always pack it with cushioning material so the glass does not break and the lid does not come loose on impact.

Ready-made sets and individual closures with the same neck type are available in the Handymade range. When combining packaging and closure yourself, we recommend verifying the seal and the behaviour of the packaging with your specific formulation.

Frequently asked questions

What is the inner liner in a glass jar for?
The inner liner protects the surface of the product between the fill level and the lid. The white plastic disc is placed directly on the cream, limits air access to the contents and prevents the product from smearing onto the lid during transport. When opening for the first time, the customer can also see that the contents are intact. After opening, it can be replaced or removed.
Is the 50 ml glass jar suitable for balms filled hot?
Yes, melted balms and ointments can be poured directly into the glass jar. Glass does not react with melted waxes or butters, and the contents solidify without deforming the walls. However, the jar must not be cold. Allow it to reach room temperature before pouring hot material, so that thermal shock does not cause cracking.
Does clear glass protect the contents from light?
No, clear glass does not protect the contents from light. Its advantage is that the product is visible; its disadvantage is that light passes through, which accelerates the oxidation of sensitive oils and the loss of efficacy of light-sensitive active ingredients. Store such products in a box or away from sunlight, or choose a jar made of dark glass.
Can a glass jar with a lid be used for watery creams and emulsions?
Yes, a jar with a lid is suitable for creams and emulsions, provided they are sufficiently thick. Glass does not react with the water phase, and the foam liner in the lid seals when tightened and limits evaporation. For thin emulsions and body lotions, however, choose a bottle with a pump. Thin contents cannot be dispensed well from a jar, and scooping with fingers makes it easier for contaminants to get in.
How to prepare a glass jar before filling, and can it be reused?
Before filling, wash the jar, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allow to dry completely. The same applies to the lid and liner. Glass does not absorb scent or colour, so after thorough washing it can be reused for a different product. The foam liner in the lid may retain the scent of the previous contents, so when changing products wash it more thoroughly or replace the lid.
