Product description

A matte glass jar, 25 ml with a black lid, is a complete ready-to-fill set for small volumes of thicker cosmetics: balms, eye and face creams, ointments, and solid perfumes. It comes as a three-part set – a matte glass jar, a black plastic screw-on lid, and a white inner liner placed on the surface of the contents under the lid. The matte glass diffuses incoming light while still allowing the colour of the contents to show through, giving the set an understated look while protecting more sensitive formulations. Glass does not react with oils or essential oils, making it suitable for formulations with a higher oil content where plastic jars may not hold up. All three parts of the set are declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products.

Key benefits

  • Matte glass – diffuses direct light reaching the contents, which is appreciated with formulations containing vegetable oils, vitamins, or essential oils prone to oxidation. The contents remain gently visible and the colour of the product is preserved.
  • Chemical stability of glass – glass does not react with oils, waxes, essential oils, or alcohol-based ingredients and does not transfer its own scent to the contents.
  • Inner liner – the white plastic liner covers the surface of the contents, reduces its contact with the lid and the air above the fill level, and helps keep the surface of the cream clean during transport and on first opening.
  • Small volume – the nominal 25 ml corresponds to the size of a standard eye cream or balm. Suitable for concentrated products dispensed in small amounts, and for samples or travel-size packaging.
  • Secure screw closure – the black lid screws directly onto the thread of the jar. The set is already matched; there is no need to search for a separate lid with the correct neck type.

How to work with the set

The jar is filled through the open neck, which is an advantage for thick and solid consistencies: a cream, balm, or ointment can be poured in warm or pressed in with a spatula without needing a narrow neck. Once the contents have set and cooled, the inner liner is placed on the surface and the jar is closed with the lid. The liner is removed each time the product is used and replaced after dispensing, or discarded by the customer on opening. Both options are common and depend on how you design the product.

The lid is fitted on the inside with a foam gasket that, when tightened, seats against the rim of the neck and improves the seal. With wide-neck glass jars, the seal depends on even tightening and on the consistency of the contents. The set is suitable for thick creams, balms, and ointments. For thin emulsions, oils, or lotions, choose a bottle with a narrow neck instead.

Solid products (balms, solid perfumes, wax-based ointments) should be poured into the jar warm in a thin stream and left to set completely at room temperature before fitting the liner and lid. This prevents moisture from condensing under the closure and a sunken centre.

Suitable for products such as

  • Eye and face creams with a thicker consistency, dispensed with a spatula or finger.
  • Lip balms and solid balms based on butters and waxes, dispensed in small amounts.
  • Ointments and intensive creams for hands, elbows, or heels with a high oil phase content.
  • Solid perfumes and fragrance balms, where glass does not absorb the scent and the matte surface complements the look of the product.
  • Samples and travel sizes of creams and masks, where customers appreciate a small quantity in a firm container.

Nominal and total volume

Jars distinguish between nominal volume and total volume to the brim. The nominal volume is the amount the container is designed for at standard fill, typically stated on the label. The total volume is the internal space up to the top edge of the neck and is always slightly larger. The difference provides a reserve for the inner liner, the seating of the lid, and slight expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The jar should therefore be filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Otherwise the liner will not fit, the contents will be squeezed onto the thread when closing, and the closure will stop sealing.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first filling – we recommend washing the jar, lid, and liner before use, disinfecting with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol, and allowing them to dry completely. Residual moisture in an anhydrous balm is a common cause of mould and spoilage.
  • Glass and heat – warm mixtures can be poured into the jar, but not directly from a high temperature into cold glass. A sudden temperature difference can cause the glass to crack. Allow jars to reach room temperature or warm them slightly before pouring in hot wax mixtures.
  • Plastic parts and essential oils – glass is unaffected by essential oils, but the lid and liner are made of plastic. For formulations with a high proportion of essential oils or solvents, check whether prolonged contact with the liner changes its appearance or the scent of the product. Standard creams and balms do not cause problems.
  • Reuse – the glass jar can be used again after thorough cleaning and disinfection. We recommend replacing the inner liner and lid with new ones when refilling for sale; for home use, washing and allowing to dry is sufficient.
  • On a small jar, a label on the lid or base and a narrow band around the circumference work well.
  • Weight – a glass jar is heavier than a plastic one of the same volume, which should be taken into account for postage and when packing larger runs.
  • Recycling – glass goes with glass; the plastic lid and liner go with plastics. Separate the parts before disposal.

The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products. It is not intended for contact with food; do not use it for homemade food preparations.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 25 ml glass jar with black lid suitable for balms and solid creams?
Yes, the set is designed precisely for thick and solid products that are dispensed with a finger or spatula. The wide neck makes filling warm and scooping out the product straightforward, and the inner liner protects the surface of the contents. For thin emulsions, oils, and lotions, a bottle with a narrow neck is preferable, as the seal of a wide-neck jar is not reliable with liquid contents.
Does the matte glass protect the contents from light?
Partially. Matte glass scatters and softens incoming light, but does not block it as effectively as amber or blue glass. For creams and balms with a standard oil phase, the reduction is sufficient. For particularly sensitive ingredients – such as high doses of retinol or unstable vitamins – darker glass or storage in a box is more appropriate.
What is the inner liner in the glass jar for?
The liner covers the surface of the contents between the cream and the lid. It limits the product's contact with the air above the fill level, keeps the surface smooth during transport, and prevents the contents from working their way onto the thread and into the lid when shaken. After opening it can be kept and replaced after each use, or discarded.
How much cream fits in a jar with a nominal volume of 25 ml?
The jar is filled to the nominal volume of 25 ml, not to the full internal capacity to the brim. The headspace above the contents is needed for the inner liner, the seating of the lid, and slight expansion of the contents with temperature changes. The exact weight of the fill depends on the density of the formulation; for oil- and wax-based balms it is typically less than 25 g.
Can the 25 ml glass jar with lid be reused?
Yes, the glass jar can be refilled after thorough washing and disinfection with ethanol or isopropyl alcohol. We recommend replacing the lid with its foam gasket and the plastic liner when refilling for customers, as the gasket gradually loses its resilience and traces of product are difficult to remove from it. For home use, washing and allowing to dry is sufficient.
Is the 25 ml glass jar with black lid suitable for contact with food?
No. The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products; neither the jar, the lid, nor the liner hold food contact certification. For homemade food preparations – such as seasoned salts or herb pastes – choose a container with food contact certification from Handymade's range.
