Product description
Brown glass bottle 250 ml with aluminium cap is a complete set for liquids that are sensitive to light – vegetable and massage oils, oil serums, herbal macerates, tinctures and alcohol extracts, tonics and hydrolats. Brown glass reduces light penetration and the silver aluminium cap seals the bottle tightly when screwed on. The 250 ml volume corresponds to a larger home batch or a smaller production run that you want to keep together and draw from gradually.
The set as a whole is approved for direct food contact, making it suitable for home-made oils, syrups, vinegars and herbal extracts as well. It is also declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products; the declaration of conformity can be found on the product page.
Key features of the set
- Light protection – brown glass limits light penetration into the contents, slowing down the oxidation of oils and fading of coloured extracts.
- Inert material – glass does not react with the contents, does not absorb fragrance or colourants, and tolerates essential oils, alcohol and acidic environments without change. After washing, it can be reused without odour traces from the previous fill.
- Aluminium screw cap with sealing insert – the cap screws onto the bottle thread and the inner foam polyethylene insert seats on the neck. When properly tightened, the bottle seals, can be carried and repeatedly opened.
- Matched neck and cap – the bottle and cap share the same thread type, so no combining or testing is needed. The set is ready to fill immediately after washing.
For which products is the set suitable
The set is particularly suitable where the contents require light protection and are dispensed by pouring, not by dropping or spraying:
- vegetable and massage oils, oil serums and oil macerates, which remain stable longer in brown glass;
- tinctures, alcohol and glycerine extracts – glass tolerates alcohol without change and does not let the fragrance escape;
- hydrolats and tonics as a stock for decanting into smaller spray bottles;
- home-made food products – flavoured oils, herbal vinegars, syrups or extracts, as the set is approved for food contact;
- stock packaging for active ingredients or liquid raw materials that are drawn from gradually.
A bottle with a narrower neck is not practical for thick creams or butters – a jar or container with a wide neck is more suitable for those.
Nominal and total volume
Two volumes are stated for packaging and it is useful to understand the difference. Nominal volume is the volume the container is designed for during normal filling; for this set it is 250 ml. Total brim-full volume is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck and is slightly larger. The difference forms the headspace – room for the cap and its sealing insert, for expansion of the contents with temperature changes, and for comfortable closing without squeezing out the contents. Therefore, fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim. Exact values for both volumes are in the specifications.
Allow warm macerates or syrups to cool to at least room temperature before filling. Warm contents contract as they cool, condensation forms in the neck, and the cap insert may not seat properly.
What is good to know before filling
Preparation before first use. Wash the bottle and cap in warm water with washing-up liquid before filling, rinse thoroughly and leave to dry completely with the neck facing down. For cosmetic fills, we additionally recommend disinfecting the inside with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and allowing it to evaporate. Residual water can cause cloudiness in oil-based contents and create a microorganism-friendly environment in anhydrous products.
Glass and heat. Glass tolerates normal filling temperatures, but does not cope well with thermal shock. Do not fill a cold bottle with hot contents and vice versa; when sterilising, heat gradually.
Aluminium cap. Tighten the cap by hand, not by force. Aluminium is a soft metal and over-tightening will deform the thread and break the seal. The sealing insert is made of plastic, so with contents containing a higher proportion of essential oils or alcohol, check after prolonged storage whether it has changed in appearance or odour.
Labelling. The bottle takes standard self-adhesive labels well.
Reuse. Both the glass and the aluminium cap can be reused after washing; at the end of their life, the glass goes into glass recycling and the cap into metal recycling.
Do not use the aluminium cap with contents of strongly acidic or alkaline pH (e.g. concentrated lye solutions used in soap making). The sealing insert usually keeps the metal separated, but if overfilled or tilted the contents may reach the edge of the cap.
Closures and combinations
The set is supplied with a screw-on aluminium cap. If you need a different dispensing method, further closures with the same neck type and ready-made bottle-and-closure combinations are available in the Handymade range; the thread type is given in the specifications. When making your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal, dispensing behaviour and packaging performance with the specific formulation.
