Product description
Amber glass medicine bottle with a volume of 15 ml, supplied as a ready-made set with a roll-on roller ball and a black plastic cap. It is used to apply liquid preparations directly to the skin without dripping and without contact with your fingers: the ball rolls the contents onto the wrist, temples, cuticles or another small area. Amber glass reduces the transmission of light, which is useful for blends with essential oils and for vegetable oils, which deteriorate faster in light.
The set is declared suitable for contact with cosmetic products, and each of the three components comes with an EU declaration of conformity. It is not intended for food packaging.
What the set consists of
- Glass medicine bottle, 15 ml – amber glass, 18/410 neck finish.
- Roll-on roller ball – a steel ball seated in a clear plastic housing. After filling, the housing is fitted onto the neck of the bottle and the ball rolls the contents onto the skin during application.
- Plastic cap – black, made of polypropylene. It covers the ball and protects it from contamination and the contents from drying out between uses.
What it is suitable for
A roll-on works only with liquid contents that the ball can pick up and transfer. It is most often filled with:
- fragrance oils – fragrance compositions in a carrier oil, for example jojoba oil or fractionated coconut oil;
- aromatherapy blends – essential oils diluted in a carrier oil for application to the temples, wrists or neck;
- oil serums for small areas – cuticles, lips, eye contours, scars;
- alcohol-based perfumes with low viscosity, if you check the behaviour of the closure in the bottle.
Thick gels, emulsions and creams are not suitable for a roll-on. The ball does not roll them, the contents stick near the neck and the dispensing is uneven. Aqueous solutions and tonics can be rolled, but for a larger area a sprayer is more convenient.
Nominal volume and brimful capacity
The nominal volume of 15 ml is the amount the bottle is designed for under normal filling. You will find the total brimful capacity, that is, the physical volume up to the neck, in the parameters. The difference between them is a reserve for the ball housing, which pushes part of the contents upwards when fitted, and for the expansion of the liquid with changes in temperature. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim.
If the bottle is filled to the brim, pressing in the ball housing pushes the contents out through the neck and soils the thread. The cap then does not fit properly and oil leaks into the cap. Leave free space in the neck.
Filling and working with the roll-on
Before the first filling, wash the bottle, disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and let it dry completely. Treat the ball housing in the same way.
The bottle has a narrow neck, so the contents are filled with a dropper, a small funnel or a syringe. You can also pour directly, but with a narrow neck it is easy to spill. After filling, the ball housing is placed on the neck and pressed in with even thumb pressure until it clicks into place. Only then is the cap screwed on. For first use, it is enough to turn the roll-on upside down several times so that the ball is moistened and starts to pick up the contents.
Mix the blend in a separate beaker and fill the roll-on only with the finished blend. In a 15 ml bottle, essential oils are difficult to mix in a carrier oil and the first doses would be uneven.
Good to know
- Glass and heat – do not fill the bottle with hot contents. Oil blends with butters, which would have to be warmed until liquid for filling, would solidify as they cool, and the ball would not roll them.
- Plastic parts and contents – the ball housing and the cap are made of polypropylene and are in permanent contact with the contents. For highly concentrated essential oils or alcohol-based blends, we recommend checking the behaviour of the closure in the finished formulation before a larger production run.
- Reuse – once empty, the glass bottle can be washed and refilled. The ball housing can be prised out of the neck, but after refitting it, check that it still seals. For your own cosmetics, it is safer to use a new roller ball.
- Other closures – closures with the same neck type given in the parameters fit the medicine bottle, and you will find ready-made bottle + closure combinations in the Handymade range. For your own combination, we recommend checking the seal and dispensing with your specific formulation.
- Recycling – the glass bottle goes into glass, the plastic cap and ball housing into plastics. Remove the steel ball from the housing.
