Product description

This amber glass medicine bottle with a roller ball applicator applies liquid preparations directly to the skin, without dripping and without fingers touching the contents. The set consists of an amber glass bottle with a nominal volume of 50 ml, a metal ball in a plastic insert and a black plastic cap, all with an 18/410 neck finish. Amber glass filters light, so contents sensitive to sunlight, such as vegetable oils or blends with essential oils, stay better protected.

Suitable uses

A roll-on works well wherever a preparation is applied to a single spot or a small area and the dispensing should be clean and economical.

  • Oil-based perfumes – a fragrance composition or essential oils in a carrier oil, applied to the wrists, neck or behind the ears.
  • Aromatherapy blends – diluted essential oils for the temples, nape or chest.
  • Oil serums for the face and eye area – the ball spreads a small amount without pressure on the skin.
  • Cuticle care and small areas where a dropper would dispense too much.
  • Liquid preparations for insect bites or spot treatment, where application without touching is useful.

The 50 ml volume is larger than is usual for pocket roll-ons. It is therefore better suited to oil serums, massage blends for smaller areas, or preparations that are used daily over a longer period.

Filling and volume

The ball rolls liquid, low-viscosity contents. Oils, perfume blends, light serums and infusions pass through without problems. Thick gels, creams or preparations with undissolved particles will block the ball or spread unevenly on it. With water-based and alcohol-based contents, we recommend checking that no leakage appears at the edge of the insert after the ball is fitted.

The nominal volume is the amount the packaging is intended for under normal filling. The brimful volume given in the parameters is the physical volume of the bottle up to the neck. The difference between them is a reserve for the roller ball insert, which takes up part of the space in the neck once fitted. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim, otherwise the contents will overflow when the insert is pressed in.

Fit the roller ball insert only after filling and press it in evenly until it seats on the neck. On first use, run the ball over the back of your hand several times so that the contents reach the surface of the ball and the applicator starts to dispense.

Good to know

Before the first filling, wash both the bottle and the roller ball insert, disinfect them with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leave them to dry completely. Before filling, the neck and the space under the ball must be dry.

The set is declared as suitable for contact with cosmetics. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food; the set as a whole is intended for cosmetic products. You will find the declaration of conformity with the product.

The cap covers the ball, protects it from dust and limits the evaporation of volatile components. With alcohol-based perfumes and blends with a higher proportion of essential oils, we recommend checking how the plastic parts tolerate the particular formulation. Glass is resistant to these contents; the plastic insert and the cap are made of polypropylene.

The roller ball insert can be removed after use and the bottle refilled. The insert may be damaged when it is removed, so for new contents it is safer to use a new ball. You will find closures with the same neck type and ready-made combinations in the Handymade range. With your own combination, we recommend checking the seal, the dispensing and the behaviour of the packaging with the particular formulation.

Do not heat the glass rapidly or pour hot contents into it. If you fill directly after heating the oil phase, let the mixture cool down. A sudden change in temperature may crack the bottle.

The bottle belongs in glass recycling, the roller ball insert and the cap with plastics. The metal ball can be pushed out of the insert and put with metals.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 50 ml roll-on medicine bottle suitable for essential oils?
Yes, diluted in a carrier oil. Amber glass protects essential oils from light, but the ball spreads the contents directly onto the skin, so a safe dilution for leave-on products must be observed. Undiluted essential oils are not filled into a roll-on. With blends containing a high proportion of essential oils, we recommend checking how well the plastic insert of the ball tolerates them over the long term.
Can water-based or alcohol-based contents be filled into a glass roll-on bottle?
Glass tolerates both water-based and alcohol-based contents without problems. The ball rolls liquid water-based preparations and alcohol-based perfumes well, but with low viscosity the contents may leak slightly around the edge of the ball. We recommend testing the seal of the insert with the particular formulation on a single piece before a larger batch.
Why is a roll-on bottle not filled to the brim?
Once pressed into the neck, the roller ball insert takes up part of the volume, so the bottle is filled to the nominal volume of 50 ml. The brimful volume is larger and forms a reserve for the insert. If it is overfilled, the contents spill out when the ball is fitted and soil the thread.
How do I clean a roll-on medicine bottle before reuse?
Remove the insert with the ball, wash the bottle in warm water with detergent, rinse it and disinfect it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol. It must be completely dry before it is refilled. The insert is cleaned in the same way, but it may come loose or be damaged when removed, so for new contents it is safer to use a new ball.
Is this roll-on set suitable for food?
No, as a whole it is intended for cosmetics. Only the glass bottle on its own has a certificate for direct contact with food; the plastic cap and the roller ball insert do not. Homemade oils or syrups are therefore not filled into this set, which is declared as suitable for cosmetic preparations.
What contents does a roll-on ball not dispense?
Thick gels, creams, balms and preparations with undissolved particles. The ball needs liquid contents that coat it as it rolls and transfer onto the skin. With viscous formulations it sticks or dispenses unevenly, in which case it is better to choose a dropper or a pump for the same neck type.
