Product description
Glass bottle, Boston round PP28S, 250 ml
Brown glass Boston bottle with a capacity of 250 ml is a packaging option for preparations sensitive to light: vegetable and massage oils, oil macerates, tinctures, hydrosols, tonics, facial and hair waters, and liquid soaps. Brown glass reduces light transmission to the contents and slows the changes that light induces in the ingredients. Glass is also chemically neutral and does not leach substances from the container wall into the contents, making it suitable for products with a higher proportion of essential oils or alcohol.
The bottle is manufactured in the European Union to cosmetic, food-grade, and technical quality standards. It can therefore be used beyond cosmetics — for home-pressed oils, syrups, vinegars, or herbal infusions. The term "Boston round" describes the shape with a cylindrical body and rounded shoulder, not the intended use of the packaging.
Why choose brown glass
- Light protection – brown glass absorbs a large portion of UV and visible light, slowing the oxidation of oils, fading of colorants, and degradation of light-sensitive active ingredients. It is not necessary for a clear serum without light-sensitive components, but for oils and extracts it is a practical advantage.
- Chemical resistance – glass does not react with essential oils, ethanol, or acidic or alkaline aqueous solutions. It is suitable where plastic might soften, become cloudy, or absorb the fragrance.
- Reusability – after washing and disinfecting, the bottle can be refilled without any loss of material properties.
- Volume for everyday use – 250 ml corresponds to the typical volume of a body or massage oil, tonic, hydrosol, or facial water for several weeks of use.
Use in production
The bottle is intended for liquid and free-flowing products that are dispensed by pouring, dropper, spray, or pump. It is not practical for thick creams and butters, as the narrow neck does not allow comfortable removal of the contents.
Typical uses:
- vegetable, massage, and hair oils, oil macerates, and oil serums;
- hydrosols, tonics, and facial waters in a spray bottle;
- tinctures, alcohol extracts, and perfume compositions in a carrier;
- liquid soaps, shower gels, and shampoos of lower viscosity with a pump;
- food use: home-pressed olive and nut oils, syrups, vinegars, herbal infusions.
Caps with a PP28S thread and ready-made combinations of the bottle with a cap, dropper, pump, or spray are available from Handymade. When using your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal integrity and cap behaviour with the specific formulation, especially for oils with a higher proportion of essential oils and for alcohol-based products.
Before first use, wash the bottle with warm water and an unscented detergent, rinse thoroughly, disinfect with isopropyl alcohol or 70% ethanol, and allow to dry completely upside down. Residual water in an oil-based product promotes microbial growth and compromises emulsion stability.
Nominal and total volume
Two volumes are stated for the bottle. The nominal volume is the volume the packaging is designed for during standard filling and is declared on the label. The total brim-full volume is the physical volume up to the neck. The difference between them is the clearance for the cap, dropper, or pump that extends into the interior, and for the expansion of the contents with changes in temperature. Fill to the nominal volume, not to the brim.
Good to know
- Glass and heat – glass tolerates hot filling, but not sudden temperature changes. Do not pour a hot product into a cold bottle or vice versa; first bring the bottle to a similar temperature.
- Labelling – the cylindrical body of the Boston round has a straight section suitable for a wrap-around label; the usable height and diameter are listed in the product specifications.
- Weight and shipping – glass is heavier and more fragile than PET. When shipping to customers, allow for packaging fill material and the higher parcel weight.
- Dark glass colour – the contents of the bottle are not visible, and customers can only estimate the remaining level by weight. For products where colour is part of the presentation, consider clear glass.
- Recycling – after emptying and removing the cap, the bottle belongs in the coloured glass waste stream.
The bottle is not intended for freezing or for filling products that generate gas during storage (e.g. fermenting syrups). Expansion of the contents inside sealed glass may cause breakage.
