Product description

Black-gold dropper, 53 mm

The dropper seals the bottle and dispenses its contents drop by drop. It is particularly suitable for facial serums, oil blends, tinctures and active ingredient concentrates, where only a small amount is used and it matters that the contents are not wasted. The black-gold finish looks neutral and complements brown, black and clear glass.

In contact with the contents is a glass tube and silicone bulb; the threaded part is made of polypropylene with an aluminium collar. Glass and silicone are an advantage with oils, essential oils and alcohol-based extracts, which would discolour or swell certain plastics over time.

Why choose a dropper

  • Precise dosing – the contents are drawn up by squeezing the bulb and released drop by drop, so the customer uses exactly as much serum or oil as needed.
  • Cap and dispenser in one – the dropper also seals the bottle, so there is no need to combine a separate cap and dispenser.
  • Materials suitable for demanding contents – the glass tube and silicone bulb withstand vegetable oils, essential oils at typical cosmetic concentrations and alcohol tinctures.
  • Attractive finish without labelling – the black-gold finish complements the bottle design and suits both natural and minimalist cosmetics.

What to watch out for when choosing

The dropper must fit the bottle in two respects. The first is the neck type: it fits bottles with an 18/410 thread, the standard size for glass serum and oil bottles. The second is the length of the glass tube. The tube should reach just above the bottom of the bottle so the remaining contents can be drawn up, but must not rest on the bottom. In a shorter bottle it would jam and the dropper could not be tightened; in a taller bottle it would not reach the remaining contents.

The dropper length is chosen according to the height of the bottle, not its volume. Two bottles with the same volume can have different heights, so before ordering a larger quantity, verify that the 53 mm length matches your bottle.

Bottles with the same neck type and ready-made bottle and dropper combinations are available in the Handymade range. When creating your own combination, we recommend verifying the seal and the behaviour of the dropper with the specific formulation, particularly with a higher proportion of essential oils or solvents.

Filling and dispensing

The bottle is filled to the nominal volume, not to the brim. The nominal volume is the amount the bottle is designed to hold under normal filling conditions; the total capacity up to the neck is greater. The difference provides a buffer for the glass tube, which pushes some of the contents upward when screwed in, and for expansion of the contents when the temperature changes. If the bottle is filled to the brim, the contents will overflow the neck when the dropper is fitted.

The dropper works best with contents of low to medium viscosity, that is oils, aqueous and alcohol-based solutions and light serums. With thicker serums of gel consistency, uptake is slower and drops are larger. It is not suitable for thick creams or balms.

Good to know

  • Preparation before first use – we recommend washing the dropper before filling, disinfecting it with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and leaving it to dry completely. Residual water in the tube would enter the anhydrous product.
  • Air uptake – a small amount of air enters the bottle with each use. With sensitive oils and serums containing antioxidants, this is a reason to choose smaller bottles that are used up sooner.
  • Silicone bulb and essential oils – at high concentrations of essential oils or with pure solvents, it is advisable to verify the long-term behaviour of the bulb with the specific formulation.
  • Reuse – the dropper can be washed and used again provided the bulb has not hardened and the tube is not chipped. A new dropper is used when selling finished products.
  • Recycling – the dropper consists of several materials; it is advisable to separate the glass tube from the bulb and threaded part before disposal.

The packaging is suitable for use with cosmetic products; a declaration of conformity is available with the product.

The glass tube may break if dropped or if the dropper is forced onto a bottle that is too short. Tighten the dropper by hand without pressure and when transporting finished products, allow for impact protection.

Frequently asked questions

Which bottles does the 18/410 dropper with a length of 53 mm fit?
The dropper fits bottles with an 18/410 thread and a height at which the 53 mm tube reaches just above the bottom. The thread type is stated in the parameters of each bottle in the Handymade range. When selecting, the height of the bottle matters, not its volume, so we recommend checking the dimensions before ordering a larger quantity.
Is the dropper suitable for essential oils and oil-based serums?
Yes, the dropper is suitable for oil-based serums and blends with essential oils at typical cosmetic concentrations. The glass tube and silicone bulb are in contact with the contents and are resistant to oils. At a high proportion of essential oils or with pure solvents, we recommend verifying the long-term behaviour of the bulb with the specific formulation.
Can the dropper be used with aqueous and alcohol-based contents?
Yes, the dropper can be used with aqueous solutions, tonics in small volumes and alcohol tinctures. Neither glass nor silicone reacts with them. With aqueous products, it should be noted that each use introduces air into the bottle, so the aqueous contents must be reliably preserved.
How is the dropper cleaned and can it be reused?
The dropper is washed with warm water and a mild cleaning agent, rinsed, disinfected with isopropyl alcohol or ethanol and left to dry. Reuse is possible for personal use provided the bulb has not hardened and the tube is not damaged. With oil-based contents, it is advisable to rinse the tube with alcohol before washing to remove the oil film.
Is the dropper also suitable for thick serums or creams?
No, the dropper is designed for contents with low to medium viscosity. With thick gel serums, uptake is slow and dosing is imprecise; with creams and balms, the dropper does not work at all. For such products a jar or pot is more suitable; for light serums, oils and tinctures the dropper is the right choice.
